Medieval Engineers: Floating Arm Trebuchet, Modern Trebuchet Design

- Today we have a look at a modern design for a Trebuchet that still works with Medieval Engineers parts.. The Floating Arm Trebuchet. Really hope we get the hooks and sling parts to make trebuchets work properly soon because this should be a super efficient design. For now though it's a kinda weak catapault! Still very happy with how it works though :) Expect more real life designs recreated in ME in future!

@Taylor Webb For some reason can never reply to you directly.. but thank you :) It is lacking a little force at the apex but I'm hopeful that the sling will help a fair bit with that.. certainly don't want to modify it too much before I can test that bit (and you can see using the public-true mod that hooks and a sling are coming!).
***** time for the sling setup man
1wsx10
Yup :)
***** so its coming? awesome
1wsx10
Indeed, been a mad week but should get it out shortly.. doing a bit of a redesign at the same time to make use of the new catch blocks too.
***** ahh, makes sense
If you put the cross beam further back, so when the arm impacts it, it's more at an angle, the tangent of that circle your projectile was travelling is the angle it flies at.
Want more range? Put the crossbeam further back.
The issue is more a lack of overall force, I did play with having it further back but in reality there is friction present that is killing the force in a way it shouldn't be, probably because of lack of suitable parts for some areas of the design. Hopefully now we have a sling I can add some more in that area at least..
I haven't ever heard of this design before, but I can see it being really effective with a sling as the whole movement is super smooth. Knowing Medieval Engineers I can guess that this wasn't a simple built, things break in the weirdest way it seems.
Yeah it's designed to be a very efficient motion, the smoothness is a good sign of the force being pushed into the arm it's just lacking the little bit for it to function. Wasn't a simple build but I'm very impressed that the result in ME are so similar to how it looks in action in real life.. a good sign methinks :)
One thing to try is creating a sling-like-effect with the projectile rather than the framework. Create 2 balls, put one in the holder and another about 5 metres behind, link the 2 balls with a length of rope. When launched the second ball helps carry the first. I've had some success with this.
Oh, interesting thinking there sir.. getting a swinging moment between the pair like that is kinda cool, will have to play around a bit and see if I can use that for this.. cheers :)
THIS is exactly what I wanted to see out of this game.
I didn't even know such a thing existed. Nice work man, must have been a frustrating build at times :)
Yeah for sure, but I've always been a bit of a closest fan of this sort of history.. more so the greeks/roman's than medieval period but who doesn't like siege engines! Have a few more interesting designs where this came from :)
***** Who hasn't been a little bit of a closet fan of some sort of history :)
Captain JaRs That is probably true :) So what's ur period then? Like I need to ask :P
The early renaissance. Mostly because of Leonardo (shocking i know) and the ancient Egypt, which isn't really a time period but it counts :)
Captain JaRs Yeah I'll accept that as a 'subject' kinda the same thing :) Leonardo should do u good in this game methinks!
My favorite kind of Trebuchet. Nicely done! Here's to hoping the game can handle the mechanics properly.
It's already doing pretty well tbh, the visual similarities to the real movement is pretty damn good. The efficiency however.. It'll come I hope :)
Rope physics are so important to catapult design. Slings make a massive improvment to just about any catapult.
Trying to understand the mechanics of this to build on and this was helpful. Thanks.
the best angle for distance is always 45 degrees. If you have the cutoff bar exactly halfway between where it is in this video and the horizontal (rotationally, not linearly) it should achieve the maximum distance (assuming Medieval engineers physics is similar to real physics)
zach chaney That did produce the best range but was still limited by the fact that this sort of trebuchet was never designed to stop at that point, most of the force comes from the follow-through of the arm.
hello fellow Zach
This is amazing! Must have taken a while to get to that final result ;). But very cool indeed...
Thanks a lot dude! When you getting you're next creation out then! I wanna see what you been upto!
Medieval looks cool now thanks to this awesome dude!
Cheers :)
Hehe, that's one cool looking beast. I really like the mechanism of it. Great video mate :)
Thanks dude :) Bit on the large side but iteration number 1!
don't about the the game, but IRL you could probably use horses to turn
geared whim capstans connected to the winch, for increased fire rate.
I think it would be awesome if you made some tutorial style videos that show how the items in game work. I have been messing around and I just can't seem to get things to work properly. I have tried looking some things up but have yet to see anything helpful. Just a suggestion that you might want to consider :D
Enjoyed this video a lot, will be keeping a close eye on this game...
Thanks, it promises to be pretty awesome tbh :)
This didnt age well
@@StodOneR lol took me a while to realise this was actually a comment I had made 9 years ago!
Nice, but you can make it work without the the rope cutting feature, instead of attaching the rope to the end of the arm, instead build a holder on the end for a block of wood to set in, place a rope tie block on that, and connect a rope from it to the projectile, then if you've done it right, the projectile, rope, and block of wood will go sailing.
Feel kinda honoured having you comment on one of my vids :) Thanks for some epically cool mods dude, can't wait to see what else you come up with for ME. See what you mean with the holder, will have to give that a try, rather ingenious in it's simplicity but might just work.. only concern I have is rope's habit of contracting length when given then opportunity at the moment... still, very intrigued. Thanks :)
OH MY GOD ITS GLORIOUS
lol, ty sir :)
I really love that design! Keep it up :)
Thanks dude :)
Nicely done all round - I look forward to many more of these. Any thoughts on Life is Feudal?
It looks very interesting tbh, a bit more of a commitment than ME of course but a very cool concept.. Haven't decided yet if I'm gonna pick it up or not :) Tempted but time is a very present factor!
Yes - I heard that all right. There are so many good games on the horizon it's difficult to prioritise.
DigitalDigging
Just waiting for the point where I can do this full time tbh.. no end of ideas and games I wanna cover but that's something that will come with time I hope.. getting some very awesome support from guys like yourself so hope so!
***** It's great to see some measured and informative gaming content - I hope you'll be able to do it sooner rather than later.
DigitalDigging
Thank you sir, actually very pleased to hear you say that because those 2 words are very much my goal :) Full time would be somewhat of a dream scenario.. I can but hope!
I love these.
Nice... If only there were flaming projectiles. Mabey soon
Awesome stuff once again, w4stedspace! I picked up ME but haven't gotten much time to play with the mechanical stuff so far. I really like this style of trebuchet. It just run so smoothly. I'm actually impressed at how smooth is runs, given the alpha stage of the game, lol. One thing I was interested in getting your thoughts on is the possibility of a walking mech. (most likely a spider type) It seems that it's possible with the components available, however given the buggy nature of ropes, it would most likely freak out and shred everything apart, lol.
For walking mechs all you need to do is check out Captain JaRs who commented below :) Already got a very nice walking spider on the go and I'm sure there's more to come from him.. He's super creative when it comes to how to use the mechanics we have at the moment.
Was surprised how smoothly it all ran in the end also, was really expecting some sort of hitch to stop it from working but honestly it's a really good sign for ME and what it can offer in future if something like this already functions like it should!
***** I think jojimbo is psychic..
Captain JaRs Seems so :)
Oh wow that's convenient lol. Will definitely check it out!
12jojimbo Hehe, not arranged but functioned quite nicely heh :) Try to embrace the madness while ur there, it helps!
awesome as always.
Thanks man :)
Very interesting, Thank You!
Wow, really cool design, very interesting =)
Thanks dude :)
You can make a projectile by attaching a ball to a wooden pole and then put it in between a fork. (Projectile made by using "j")
Sadly still doesn't give me the sling effect but I'll give that a try anyway, maybe it'll perform better setup like that. Cheers :)
out of curiosity are you going to re-post this with the now working trebuchet release hook? I was working on one myself but it kept sticking in the track and exploding. I would like to see yours in action or maybe even as a workshop item.
I didn't even see yesterday's update contained that I was soo busy... the answer is very much YES! Need to re-make it a little with the new round timber also. Cheers for reminding me I now have to get excited on Tuesday's as well as Thursdays :)
***** Not a problem :), i also was curious about the "FAT" are there any dimensional rules or ratios i could use in the creation of one? I do not excel at the mathematics involved so some simple ratios have helped me out. For example in ME for a standard trebuchet i use a ratio of 3.5 - 1 for the main arm lengths using the "1" for the hinged weight distance as well.
ChaoticKnightmare
I ended up looking through some schematics and working out my own as I couldn't find the simple ratios anywhere. Sorry to not be of more help but I didn't even think to write them down :s Can find a few schematics just by googling and looking at image results though.
This is really awesom!! Think you could make an automatic reloading system?
Maybe it's not that useful here because you wouldn't get enough energy. but in physics we saw that you would get the largest distance if it is thrown with an angle of 45° wrt the ground.
I'm kinda gonna hang on the sling part and then see how it performs before I change too much tbh, seems ok so far but it's always gonna be a bit weak until it can use the sling action proper to transfer force. You are correct though and if physics dictates that's the best angle then you can be pretty sure ME will agree with that :)
I dunno if you know yet, but slings ARE in the game now-can anyone say sling version?
Hehe yep :) It's coming! Been busy but been shrinking it a bit and updating for the new catch blocks too! 'COMING SOON™'
How did you stabilise the arm andhold it in the middle? when i try to make rails so that the wheels stay in line it starts to wobble and destroys itself
1:06 Tearable ropes? Or were they not in the game at that stage?
MrGoatflakes None of that stuff was in at that point aye, didn't even have round catch blocks yet :)
There is one problem with this design - you depict a heavy counterweight at the end of the trowing arm. What would this be in reality? There is a reason why medieval trebuchets used a pivoting box filled with stones - there was simply no other way to provide such a mass. Today you could use rings of cast lead but this was not an option back then.
As I mentioned in the description the FAT is a design that's far more modern - it's kinda what a trebuchet would look like now if we still had a purpose ot make them :)
could you not build a wooden open topped "box" and attatch it with 4 strings to the tip af the arm as a make shift sling?
I must say im extreamly impressed with this, and id rather not have you coming near my castle if you dont mind :P
I fully intend to continue my reputation of 'guy you least want to have in a non-friendly MP server with you' in Medieval Engineers also :) hehe
And sadly not, the ropes have some weird elastic function at the moment when attached to an object that can move that isn't held in place somehow.. as the arm lift it draws the box towards the arm until there's 0 slack left and it's basically touching the arm.. was my thought also :(
wait untill the wood beams can break themselves on harsh contact :D
i heard they are going to add that it soon.
Only harsh contact is in the catapault version I show at the end, was very pleased with that tbh.. whole point of this design really is that it's very smooth and stable, all the force is transferred to the sling. I may need to make some of the beams thicker if they change it, but if this doesn't work in ME then ME isn't an accurate representation of physics :)
All of these designs, created by amateurs, and yet so much more effective than the designs made by the smartest people of the Medieval Age. If just one faction could have blueprints to all of these designs; rams, siege towers, construction mechanisms, and so on. We may have had a world domination, by a long shot.
Yeah it's amazing to see some of what people have come up with since which as you say tends to be purely amateur work for competitions and the like, it's super cool.. How much it would have changed the world back then is a very hard call however :) Technology spreads fast so you can assume all it really would have done is accelerate development. Or at least that's my take on it :)
I thought the same way as well. At first I figured it might have been harder for them, since they were the ones that were creating designs from the ground up, with nothing to work off of. Who knows, maybe they could have actually created much better versions of their siege artillery, but figured it might be a waste of time since the current models were doing such a fine job at wrecking peoples' castles.
Chibi Chan Almost certainly was, we understand so much more about what materials are capable of and how to best make use of those attributes... while it's still made from things they had available the 'technology' is still more advanced in all respects :)
*****
If back in time, humanity was aware or able to use some of the improved designs we seen, today we could already live on one of those Sci-Fi future movies with cool stuff.
Or! on a complete steampunk wasteland because of the wars humanity could have started because of this same technology, history has teached us that with great power comes great responsability, and humans don't have such a feature implemented on their goberment... "Sadly"
GonTar TC
hehe yeah, think the 2nd route might end up being the more likely although the stalemate I mentioned above still applies perhaps.. in the end technology only remains exclusive to one side for so long.
Wonder who won the contest!
Will find out in today's video :)
***** Sweet!
seeing this 2 years later... it is now impossible to build because the wheels glitch through the wooden rail and you cant place a wheel between the wooden rods tightly because kraken comes and the whole thing explodes... i was trying for days , its just impossible. Shame :(
Since there's now breakable rope can u update the trebuchet
Charlie Tomkins Aye have both that and the proper sling hook now.. Wanna do a full remake of it though and try and get rid of the wheels for the round wooden beams instead, make it a bit smaller.
aww that's a shame that slings arent in the game yet, I guess because there's no proper rope physics to allow for it... is this on their to do list?
+IndustrialDonut they are in now, at least to some extent.
how i choice the direction in turn ? sorry for bad englisch
pgup/pgdn/home/end etc
wasted you should try making a ballista
Will do! :)
can we see a balista in the future?
for sure :)
yes!
You can now make an actual trebuchet!
This *is* an actual Trebuchet although yeah, can now add a sling to it :) Working on it!
'COMING SOON™'
YES. and I suppose I phrased my comment wrong, but the new update makes for even more fun builds.
Lol @ the end ... wtf physics!
That's not wtf physics.. that's Rocky.. you treat him with respect! Poor fella, he went before his time.
How do you "reverse" the pullwheels?
Shift + T
***** ah thank you, couldn't find that anywhere
nice one man:) you should upload it to steam workshop :)
Cheers! Only reason I haven't is that it's in 2 separate pieces.. the arm isn't attached to the structure at all and so you kinda have to build half of the structure around the arm once in position. When I do the next one I'll find a way to attached them together temporarily for the blueprint :)
arrh i see :) i hope that it will end up there anyway thought, easyer for me to "figure" out how you did it ;)
Patrick clemmensen
I could upload the world I suppose, just people wouldn't be able to move it really.. just have a look at how it works.
yeah. If you wont upload it i would appreciate if you could send me the files?
Patrick clemmensen
I'll upload it when I get a chance :)
Is it just me or is the colour/brightness or whatever just... off in this game just seems dull and unpleasant to look at.
