    Thanks for posting.
    The potential for this is huge.
    I was watching a tutorial for a commercial product recently, they spent a lot of time talking about camera setup for accuracy. That product required a lot of manual intervention to stitch photos together for the 3d model.
    As others have commented. A cloud service for pilots to upload photos to is a likely service that pilots will want.

    Pretty cool Dennis. The other day I was at a UAV dealer in Liberty Hill Texas and there was someone that had a delta wing. They set some way-points and it flew autonomously while taking pics. The images would be stitched together later.

    Wow, I must try this thing as soon as possible.
    I was almost convinced to buy license for Photoscan, but found out this can be a great substitute since DSM&DTM and orthophoto is all I need.
    I actually know nothing about coding and programming, but this is legit!
    Thanks.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  Před 8 lety

      +Don Kim Thanks for the feedback. The good news is you don't need to know much about coding or programming to use ODM. As long as you feel comfortable at the command line then you should be able to get it to work. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

    • @DK-wr9nd
      @DK-wr9nd Před 8 lety

      +Dennis Baldwin I runned this with your example phothos but the results (orthophoto and DEM derived by CSV) doesn't seem good enough yet... Gonna try with some other example UAV photos another day.
      However this is truly amazing project for sure and totally agree that it has great possibilities.

  • @ravfpv6201
    @ravfpv6201 Před 9 lety

    Those are fantastic results.
    Pix4d could be forced to make their products more affordable or crack the mold all over again.
    It may be too early for that statement but it really makes it hard to justify paying $7700us for pix4d for my company when Steven and his team have created an open source program that processes your images with that level of quality.
    Thanks Dennis
    Keith

      @dennisbaldwin  Před 9 lety

      Keith Rolston I agree with you. I'm anxious to see what the orthophoto branch of OpenDroneMap does. I'll be experimenting this week and will hopefully get worthwhile results that I can share.

      It would be great if they created some type of volumetrics or contoured survey system that you could hammer in some pins to get the accuracy with in a centimetre. I'm way ahead of myself again but the possibilities are very exciting. It would be nice to find out the accuracy of this software.

  • @MarkJWilliams0
    @MarkJWilliams0 Před 9 lety

    I've just pulled the texture orthophoto branch. Whilst the master branch runs on pretty much any Ubuntu variant, the orthophoto branch needs 12.04 to run. I'm just running through some test data now.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  Před 9 lety

      Mark Williams Any ideas what dependencies there are for 12.04? I ask because I have a job in progress right now with the orthophoto branch on 14.04. It's running just fine. Right now I'm waiting for the bundler process to finish. This is one of those processes that unfortunately can only be run on 1 core so it takes a loooooong time.

  • @hiwayM9
    @hiwayM9 Před 9 lety

    As I am watching and listening, it occurred to me that every business, hobby, interest I have as I became older requires massive processing power.
    I guess because I started in computer graphic manipulation way back when with CorelDraw and the earliest versions of Adobe software that I have some risk aversion to waiting for pictures to feckin render!
    I think I should have built the stinking computing hardware before building my multirotors, ROFL!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  Před 9 lety +1

      ***** No lie! The rendering process is always the bottleneck. The cool thing about this project is it does use the GNU parallel (www.gnu.org/software/parallel/) tool to allow the work to be done in parallel....and it could eventually be passed off to multiple computers to process. But I believe there is still some of the work that needs to be done serially. I'm new to the project but will share as much as I learn. Hope all is well.

    @georgecorea8795 Před 8 lety

    That's brilliant. I finally have my cx-20 and will be playing with this soon. Do you need a GPS enabled camera to get usable images? or can this be done by the APM?

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  Před 8 lety

      +George Corea You can do this without a GPS enabled camera as long as you geotag them somehow. I talk about it some here: czcams.com/video/ok9bpmUuQnM/video.html Thanks and good luck.

  • @willsu21
    @willsu21 Před 8 lety

    Awesome! What do you need to get started? I've been flying a DJI phantom 2 with gorpro 4 for about a year now. The imagery is stunning but it seems like there are some limitations when it comes to creating georeferenced imagery or orthos. So any help on gear needed such as drone, camera, etc, will help a lot. thanks.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  Před 8 lety

      I know you can do this with a Phantom 3 but not sure about a Phantom 2 since the DJI SDK isn't supported. I've been using Maps Made Easy to take the photos with my P3 and then using 3rd party software such as OpenDroneMap to stitch. MapsMadeEasy has a cloud service that will stitch, but it costs a little. Good luck and let us know where you end up.

  • @hummingbirddronesinc5809

    Hey Dennis,
    Thanks for doing this work already I am super excited to start using it, just a question for you, does it right now or do you plan on OpenDroneMap supporting measurements on the orthomosaics. Say for estimating volumes of material piles in quarries and stuff?
    Thanks!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  Před 9 lety

      Hummingbird Drones ODM does not support measurement capabilities, but I don't see why it wouldn't in the future. Just FYI I'm just a contributor to the project and not the main author. I'm getting involved because I think it has a lot of potential. Thanks for following along.

      Oscar Avellaneda-Cruz I'm actually running this on Amazon's EC2 cloud. I figured that would be easier than getting it running on my Mac. I may try to get it running locally on my Mac soon and will let you know if I figure it out. Please do the same if you get it running. Thanks.

    • @okiave
      @okiave Před 9 lety

      Dennis Baldwin I opted for wiping the windows7 SSD in my mac pro tower and installing Ubuntu. Pretty painless. I think it would be harder though if you tried doing this as a partition on a single drive.
      Out of curiosity, how many instances and what cpu & ram combo did you deploy for the 7 hrs of processing?
      I ask because my mapping platform is a Canon S100 and my workstation is a 6 core with 32gb ram. If it weren't for our dog slow expensive upload speeds here in Alaska I'd probably go EC2 as well.

    • @okiave
      @okiave Před 9 lety

      Oscar Avellaneda-Cruz I did a test on my my machine processing your images from this video. It took 2h 41min. The most ram intensive part happens early on and used 21GB . I processed the non-geo tagged set. Later I ran into difficulty installing the the ortho texturing flavor of the project. It seems like it hung up on intsalling all its necessary modules. I'm gonna email Steven my log details. Have you had similar issues?

  • @rominagonzalezmusso6207

    Hi Dennis. Great video. I'm making some research on this tool to start using it. However and since this video y quite old now, can you tell me if this project has still support? Is the processing faster now? I'm going to use it in Linux Mint. Thanks!

    Love it Dennis. Do you have any instructions for loading the projects into Meshlabs or QSID as I can't seem to find any up to date instructions... I have finally got ODM and WebODM to work thanks to your instructions and those on GitHub. I tried it on 3 different Ubuntu builds machines and in the end i got it to work on a low powered i3 2.5gHz 4 core with only 4 Gig RAM (although I did mount a USB3 64Gb swap file as well just in case :) ). It would be so cool if you could extract the ODM Web webpage output (view 2D and 3D map functionality) into a web page as that functionality is awesome!

      Google+ sucks balls!!!! All good :) There are so many things over my head and I just wanted to share my findings. If you have any interest in getting some imagery processed feel free to let me know. I'll be happy to run it through OpenDroneMap or Photoscan Pro so you can see the results. My email is db at unmannedairlines dot com if you want to get in touch. Take care.

    This is for people who don't need it. Way to fast and too small to follow if you don't know how to use it already....common mistake on "tutorials". Please, if you are going to take the time to do it... take the time to do it!

      I will work on a video, but in the meantime I would recommend trying to do this on Windows with Vagrant:
      github.com/OpenDroneMap/odm_vagrant
      Good luck and let us know how it goes.

    7 hours for 90 photos? That's not useful at all haha.

      Things are much faster now with the latest version of ODM. I'll do another video soon that explains the process and results.
