When I was a young medical student, I used to listen to this recording every time the night before every exam. And when Di Stefano cries in desperation at the and, I used to think-"What is a silly exam in comparison to this tragedy!?" The best "La Boheme" ever, no discussion.

Now that's perspective of the most beautiful kind Ivan, I will endeavor to share this sentiment whenever I'm faced with meaningless trivialities of lifes journey. I agree this recording takes some beating, but I only wish Callas had sung Mimi in an Opera House production, even though she saw the role as no real challenge to her vocal chords, Boheme is a thing of beauty and deserved her stamp on an Opera stage.
Obviously, you have never heard Bjorling, Victoria de Los Angeles, Robert Merrill and Sir Thomas Beecham; even in mono it's is the best ever!!! Not to mention it supposedly was pulled together in 3 days because everyone happened to be in town the same day! I have been waiting for over 50 years for someone to do better.

jisiri I honestly thought the Bjorling/De Los Angeles was the best but this is by far the best in my opinion. One can hear the acting in every act. The. Nobody can compare the beauty of Di Stefano’s voice. This is not a “concert” recording but a la Scala production.

Such a relief form many bad productions recently. This is how la Bohème should be performed. Right tempo, smooth legato, and Callas. This is more than perfect.
I am guessing that would include the end of O Soave Fanciulla where Di Stefano DOES NOT sing the ending in the harmony that Puccini wrote but sings the ending the other way.

My favourite combination of sublime singers. I cried. I wish I could have seen them perform but, at least, there's no clapping to destroy the mood which Callas said she did not like.

Listening to this recording leaves me shattered every time I hear it ! This is supreme vocal acting, by every one of them. How they managed to get all so involved is beyond my understanding, this goes way beyond the theatre.

This AMAZING recording should be better known. - In fact, this is a PERFORMANCE, not just a recording. Callas captures every nuance of the wonderful, innocent, sensual, doomed Mimi, and accompanied by a marvelous cast - DiStefano is at his very best here - bringing this "old war horse" to life in a way it rarely is onstage. EVERY singer should sit and listen and study this carefully - with score in hand - to learn what it means to REALLY sing opera!

Would you believe this is the ONLY time Maria Callas sang La Boheme. She never sang this opera on stage, only in this recording.

I know....I'm here again...and I make no apologies... The phrasing, tone and haunting sotto voce on the word "bada" in the middle of "addio senza rancour" is enough to confirm this woman as the greatest singing actress of all time....surely?!!

Many compare Tebaldi's 58 recording with this. Tebaldi has a big, beautiful tone (as always). and interprets this opera with sincere passion. But...
Callas' ability to demonstrate a frail but clear Mimi - while periodically summoning her muscular dramatic singing skills - with bell like diction and a foreshadow of sadness in even the warmest moments of this role... this prowess is unsurpassed.
The comparison between La Divina and that italian lady is unfair. The one was human, the other one not from this world. Guess who was who. (the whole matter/"rivalry" between those two comes from Italian opera fans that cant deal the fact that theres nothing else better than Callas). I'm not an opera fan (at least one month ago, cause of Callas I started to enter into this world the last days, so I'm not an "expert", but also I have a more "objective" opinion than the opera fans , and that opinion is that whenever I hear her voice I KNOW AT ONCE that is her, the instant recognizable she has in my untrained ears is the biggest + in my poor book.

The pathos..the legato of line...in every act.....its not stagecraft its Mercurial?!!!...Sorry...she never sang it on stage?!!!....Thank GOD then for EMI in the 1950's!!!!......Di Stefano was born to sing this role on this day...in this recording...Moffo too....with the greatest singer who ever lived!!!!....Don't try to dissuade me/argue with me....you "Divina" detractors out there....I'M NOT INTERESTED!!!!

I watched my beloved wife..7 years ago... die in much less time than this..and nearly died with the shock myself!!..If only it had sounded like this...I may be over it by now...but the heartache and feeling I felt... lives on in this recording....Believe me..... this is not what death sounds like!....I only wish it did!!!...xxx

In your analysis of this being the greatest Boheme recording ever I will take a wild guess that you have no problem with the fact that in the first act duet O Soave Fanciulla Di Stefano does not sing the ending in the harmony that Puccini wrote but instead sings it the OTHER way, matching high c with Callas like a power couple. There has been much debate on CZcams over this and many opera lovers prefer the tenor sing the end of the duet in the harmony that Puccini wrote. Some even have chastised tenors who sing it the other way, among them Di Stefano. I have no problem with the tenor singing the ending in the harmony. However, I also have no problem with, and myself prefer, when tenors sing the ending the other way the way Di Stefano gloriously does here.

Excelente elenco.. La Callas y Distefano dúo sin igual en cualquier obra que se juntaban, Divos y estudiosos inteligentes que tuvieron el mundo de en sus manos. Claro que a Pipo lo prefiero del pintor y Cavaradossi. Ella en cambio lo que interpretaba era un exito con ese instrumento muy bien trabajado y cuidado.

I enjoy this recording, but I always wish that EMI had spent their time on operas that Callas admired and no one could do better. I'd trade a hundred of this or Manon Lescaut to have a good version of her Bolena, Armida, Macbeth, Nabucco, Vestale. . .
As she said, singing Mimi is easy, but no one could do what Callas did in the other roles.
I was thinking of exactly the same thing, though, needless to say, anything recorded by this incomparable Genius makes our world so much richer and more interesting...

The strength and sensitivity of Di Stefano's depth of musical expression in that beautiful voice is breathtaking, keep the Kleenex box handy .
I really can't help but laugh at the idea of Callas as Mimi, a shy, fragile and demure wallflower LMAO!!!!
However, with that being said, her performance is admittedly very good but not great IMHO, she simply seems incapable of generating that vulnerable warmth that is required for the role of Mimi, even her death scene (where you think she would really shine) is missing a critical element. This is definitely not her role.
