Luffy used to tell her "don't touch the hat" and said it was his real treasure. But, she is his crew. She is also one of his treasures. Until now she never asked for help, and never was open or honest about her troubles. Putting the hat on her says "you're my treasure too and I will protect you like I protect my hat."
She burned her childhood away for Arlong, believing his lies because he hadn't gone back on a deal involving money before - the village still standing this whole time they paid their tribute was testament to that, along with his deals with Nezumi etc. Nami's mom almost certainly knew about Arlong because she was a former marine and he was some sorta famous pirate (which is why he knew about Jimbe - the fish man warlord of the sea like Mihawk). Nami probably thought if she was inside the crew she could keep anyone else she loved from dying - the only mother she ever remembered would be the last.
In the manga she tried to keep the secret from everyone but Nojiko forced it out of her when she was little, and Nojiko also told the rest of the village. The village kept it secret from her that they knew all along, because they didn't want to make Nami think they were counting on her, so she could run away if she had to and not think that she was letting them all down. They streamlined it a bit here but I'd say it worked pretty much the same. Nami repeating what she said to Luffy and him just taking it, though he did fib a bit when she said "you have no idea what's going on here" and he said he didn't - in the manga he fell asleep when Nojiko wanted to tell the story of Arlong killing their mother - he said he didn't care about her past.

Luffy put his hat on Nami to let her know how important she is to them. She's not going to face Arlong alone. They are her crew. She is there's. "NO ONE hurts his friends."

I love your reactions (not just to this series) but don't worry too much about pronouncing the restraunt name I have seen a lot of people say it in different ways. I pronounce it the way the dub anime say it. As for Luffy and Garp being similiar, it doesn't matter if it is the live action or the anime those two could be the same person given diferent circumstances and there will be another season it is already approved by netflix and underway.
Soo glad there's gunna be another season, It's soo much fun and I'm guess they have tons of material to work with.
