What Kind of World - a “Life is Strange” Fan Song inspired by Episode 4

  • I wrote this song after having replayed the first Life is Strange’s Episode 4 recently. It’s written from Chloe’s perspective and can of course only be about/for Rachel. In short: It doesn’t get more emo than this.
My goal is to write and record one original song about each episode of every Life is Strange game and right now I am only ONE song away from that, namely one about Episode 5. Check out the other ones on my channel if you haven’t yet!
So this song… Sheesh. What a load of work. It even “switches between alternate timelines” (musically) a couple times throughout, because, you know, Episode 4… But I’ve needed to write this one for a long time. Episode 4 is one my all-time favorites and Ashly Burch's performance gets me every time. It's so raw, it's almost scary. Hopefully I could channel some of that energy into the song.
Thank you guys a lot for sticking around. Let’s raise a glass to Rachel.

okay now I'm actually crying. the song starts off so emo/angsty, the lyrics "why should I get to live just to watch you decompose?" hit hard already. then retelling chloe and rachel's story from your perspective and imaginary just brought back all the memories. the piano bridge honestly surprised me. sometimes when artists do this it feels really random, but in here it transitions so beautifully. I'm just so amazed, dude. just, thank you for making music.

I'm really glad you like it, thanks a bunch for the kind words! And I actually agree with you, I'm not usually a fan of forcing a song into parts like this bridge instead of letting the natural flow decide where to go. I guess the "sort of alternate timelines within a song" idea was too enticing...

The first life is strange will always have the best story out of all of the sequels because it showed the most emotion and hardship.

Another great one! Makes me wanna dance. Your songwriting and production skills are getting better and better!
This afternoon that weird thought struck me "has it really been half a decade now?". It makes perfect sense I'm greeted by a video of yours after work.
...let me continue that thought for a couple of minutes, 'cause when I think about it...: I don't know why many people think about good story-driven games any different than about good books or movies. Literature for example never fully gets outdated, at least not within a few decades. People read good books and draw inspiration and joy from them no matter if they were released a long, long time ago. Sure the rhetoric changes, as much as the style of movies or games changes with technical progress, but a good story will forever remain a good story worth being told and felt.
Damn, I discovered LiS quite late, about three years ago, and it took over two years until I wasn't hit by some blissful, nostalgic thought about it every single day. Kinda sad when I think about that. I told myself that I never want to forget about it, never.
And again, it's not even the Pricefield/Amberprice thing that pulled at my heartstrings so much, though I truly think it's wonderful that they included that, and that it inspired so many people in the LGBTQ community. I'm a straight normie but I still wear a small rainbow flag between the other patches on my cut-off. Because solidarity is the only weapon anyone should carry (and to remind narrow-minded people that we're not living in the 18th century anymore).
No, this adventure is also simply a deep and touching story about friendship, trust, honesty and self-reflection. Stunningly lifelike, inspiring heartbreaking and heartwarming. I drew so much inspiration and energy from this...
And now as the chill and rain has chased off the summer's heat and dust, this strange little adventure sneaks into my thoughts more often again and I'm glad about it.
And while I kindly want to apologize that the past half-hour has proven once again that I still can't think and talk about this game without pouring my heart out about it (I thought for a second about just deleting most of this emo comment but hell with it, the LiS community is so, so loving), let me close with a very lyrical but kinda shamelessly melodramatic quote (in german) from a band that I, despite it's a completely! different genre, connect a lot with autumn and nostalgia and the last line especially with LiS:
"...draußen greift der junge Herbst wieder nach den einsamen Herzen, Hebt nun eure Gläser, lacht und spürt wieder der Sehnsucht Schmerzen.
Denn solange Wunden pochen, Narben unsre Seele zieren, Fließt noch Blut und strömt noch Geist,
so lasst uns etwas Zeit verlieren."
(Freely translated: ...Out there the young autumn is reaching for the lonely hearts again, raise your glass, laugh and feel the longing's ache again. Because as long as wounds are throbbing and scars are adorning our soul, blood is still flowing and spirit is still pouring, so let's lose a little time.)

    • @Campusanis
      @Campusanis  Před 3 lety +2

Thank you for that and no need to apologize! I'm hopeful that story-driven games like LiS (whch are still relatively new if you exclude more text-based games) will be considered part of a canon of "classic" video games in the future, much like books and movies.

What a beautiful comment, I'm glad that I'm not the only one that still thinks about lis a lot. I think Lis actually played a big part in my life when it comes to developing/accepting my identity.
I don't think I was that emotionally invested into another videogame. (If you discount To the moon, which would probably make me cry again too ^^)
(Would you mind telling me the name of the band where the quote is from? It's a good line and I'm always eager to discover musicians I don't know yet.)

@@sturmklinge9642 Thanks for your kind words. Yeah I can relate to that a lot. Not so much about my identity, but more like some mental issues. The game hit me right when I was going through some new and challanging events (don't ever think your personal coming of age story ends when you're 25. Life is indeed f___ing strange and I guess we never stop learning and evolving...or at least we shouldn't) ...and in the past, times like that were stronly connected to a problematic amount of anxiety. I can't fully describe how, but LiS helped me a lot to cope with situations like that and wrap my head around things and being more positive overall. It made me think a lot about how I approach situations and people, and to empathize with pepole (though I must say I was pretty good with the latter as long as I can remember...it's not by coincidence that I love these calm, emotional story games). The whole self-reflection thing really got me. While I was previous often very anxious about a lot of things and didn't know what to do, i'm now much more in a mindset which tells me that there is always a way to try and do the right thing, and that reflecting about things calmly instead of driving myself crazy inside, not knowing what to do, makes many things so much better. I may have figured things out for myself anyways...you grow with every challange they say. But LiS fit so damn well in that time and I won't lie if I say it truly helped me. I can relate to Max so, so, so much. She kinda feels like an angel to me. Also a lot of the sensitive topics which are portrayed in LiS are familiar to me from my school days, which also made the game hit me hard.
I have to admit I don't have many references of other recent video games outside the LiS realms because I rarely play. These chill adventure games are still relatively rare. I'm totally not into action games anymore. After a day of work, that's more stress than fun to me. I watch those with good stories like the last of us and skip the fighting scenes haha. :D But I'm oh so grateful that a buddy recommended LiS to me. It made me become like a total teenage fanboy. And I gotta say, while season two was not a bad approach but a bit oddly written, Dontnod's new game Tell me why is as amazing as the landscape as it is set in, wow, just wow.
The band who wrote these lines is called "Nocte Obducta". They play progressive/avant-garde black-metal. ...Though it's said they don't like this term because in the black metal scene, you find a lot of very weird crap and people who are taking shit way too seriously, or right-wing assholes. And it's important to note that their sound changes quite a bit on different albums. But it's mostly long, atmospheric songs with very poem-like metaphoric lyrics. Harakiri for the Sky, Agrypnie and Anomalie are similar bands if you like this kind of music. It's not the right music for partying (I prefer some good, fast punk rock for that), but for walks, long drives or train rides or rainy days at home or at the office, I enjoy that shit a lot. And these were some of the most immersive shows I've ever been to. What an atmosphere! God how I miss going to concerts in these times...

@@Campusanis An interesting thought indeed. Well for some genres there are like "classic" games which are a bit like cultural artifacts almost 30 years after their release. ...when I think about stuff like Broken Sword 1 or the Secret of Monkey Island. Even if that's mostly a thing in the gaming subculture. A while back I found there are actually some seminar papers and teaching materials involving LiS floating around on the web (and I only searched for german publications) Yeah yeah I know I'm such a fanboy for digging so deep into all that. It's mostly about story telling or ethics (surprise). When I think back to my school days, I could totally imagine this as a digression in english class. The stories we read were always something you could reflect on and we did discuss the story, the decisions, the consequences...this would work wonderfully with LiS I guess. And it would surely motivate the students more than the crap we had to read haha. My wife is a high school english teacher, maybe I should play LiS with her someday :)
