The Deltic engine doesnt like full on thrash starts. Pulling away with a Deltic involves a graduall build up, ease off, power back on, then ease off, then when momentum is fast enough, full power can be applied
I use to watch them and the class 37's leave Grantham station's platform 1, heading for London. You could feel theplatform vibrate as they put the power on to leave. It always felt like the old goods shed joined to the platform would shake apart. It was just fantastic. I'm in my 50's now, but can close my eyes and hear and see them so clearly.
yep, nowt wrong with showing off, sounds great etc, but the driver doesnt get the bill for screwing the bollocks out of the engines does he!!! if he did he might be a touch more careful with them....
The name "deltic" refers to the name given by Napiers to the engine type. the cylinder bank cross section resembles the greek letter Delta. or an upside down triangle if you like. nothing to do with diesel electric.
The noise and the power used to reverberate around York station - it's a magnificent sound that stays with you for ever.....
The best Deltic engine music I've ever heard. Nice clag, too. Many thanks for uploading!
What a magnificent beast. Wonderful stuff.

she sounds even better than my v8! deltics have the best engine sound, then probably the westerns.
Nice vid, only one ive not seen in presevation, and she only lives 10 mile down the road from me.
a heavy train passed my house while i was watching this video and everything shaked a bit, very nice effect :P
(yes, i live that close to trains)
what a glorious sound at 1:20
It seems to be having quite a few problems trying to pull out! Unless they're showing off the Deltic's noise to York before moving off.
I was there that day :)
a real beauty
wow.....
Looks like 1 of the engines shut down in that clip whilst the loco was pulling away...
It looks so un-aerodynamic!! Still awesome though.
man wot a beast
My lords!!!!! :)
*Real* Trainspotting died when these locos were withdrawn!
It's diesel-electric, my friend. :-)

Is this diesel-electric?, or diesel-hydraulic? The way it's revving, I'd guess hydraulic.
HAHA that Horn was AWESOME!!! Like a Football Horn!!
Are they meant to smoke that much?
diesel electric mate, nearly as good as an hydraulic though!
