- Andy and Brenden discuss the latest vibes on the Cardinals starting rotation. Do the Cardinals still need another starter after Lance Lynn's resurgent outing Monday? Should they put Steven Matz out of sight and out of mind from their plans after his latest setback?

Yes, trade Carlson and prospects to for a 2/3 starter. I’m kind of done with Carlson and with the emergence of Donovan and burleson in the OF and nootbaar and edmon coming back, I think he’s odd one out. I liked Carlson but I think a change of scenery might be best for him.
not to mention jordan walker knocking on the door and michael siani as an elite defensive piece
Teams have to want Carlson for that to work unless he’s just a throw in piece. Wanting a 2/3 starter with any control whatsoever is going to cost a lot of prospects.
Well they could also spend money but the cards seem to hate doing that @michaelkoch9421
Mo won’t go after that type of guy
Carlson has no trade value. Hes odd man out on a team LOOKING for outfield help. And I think if he gets consistent playing time he'll turn it around.
Great job gentlemen
Our best trade chip may be Gorman. Donovan, Edman and Sagesse can fill 2nd base and utility, and Burleson has emerged as a lefty slugger. Gorman might get a top tier pitcher in return.
Do not give herpye hence ,roby away for a guy who will more than likely leave as soon as he can.
I do think Cardinals will add a SP at trade deadline but of course it will be something like a Tyler Anderson, Eric Fedde (basically this years JA Happ & Jon Lester).
The main issue I have with this is, how in the world could Mo & this FO put their full trust in Matz, and when their minor league SP depth was so thin.
I think they could have easily looked at trading Matz and getting another team to bite on him for $11 million (even if you had to eat 2-3 million), and then picked up another SP on the market, that could actually go pole to pole (as Mo used his language to describe Gibson, Gray & Lynn).
It’s almost as if trading Matz would have been admitting a mistake and Mo 100% hates to admit he makes any of those.
Wow. What a flat team in the day game Wednesday. Never seen the stadium so vacant. Bad times for ownership. Hoping they can pick it up tonight. And they did. 😃 4 two out RBIs. 👍👍👍👍👍Happy to see Libertore shove and followed by a beauty by Roycroft. 28 consecutive saves for Helsley. 😃😃
Yes they need another good starter strengthen the bullpen, and they need more offense... most days offense is just enough, but when you have 4 hitters under .200 everyone else is under .300, Gorman looking lost again, Offense needs some outside help. No Edman (if he ever comes back) will not help and you cant count on Noot staying healthy.
Yes but a lot of other really good teams also need starting pitching that have better farm systems.
Valid point
I think we need another starter. Not necessarily an ace but a decent one. Helsley needs to stop with the 101 and 102 and bring it down a notch. I think it would help his location. He has plenty of movement at 97 or 98. Just my opinion.
I don't think it's happening on purpose he just doesn't have a feel for the fastball as consistently lately.
That’s kind of my point. I know he isn’t doing it on purpose. It’s just extremely hard to get control using max plus velocity.
If I had to choose only one move, I'd like to see them go after a high-leverage reliever. Still half of the season to go, and they are showing signs of wear. Both would be better, though.
They need both to sustain
Cardinals need a legit 2 to slot behind Sonny Gray. A legit number 2 takes a lot of pressure off Mikolas, Lynn and Gibson and slots them into more favorable pitching matchups. The question is, will John Mozeliak part with the prospects it’ll take to snag someone of that caliber. The Cards have OF depth and they’ve got decent depth with prospects…enough to get a deal done, anyways….
I know Mo said it wouldn’t happen but Bauer would cost league minimum. Otherwise who else is out there?
Plenty of trade candidates
@@bschaeffer12But you can get Bauer and still keep that trade piece to get other help
Well let's see if any MLB team signs Bauer, if not, what does that tell you about Bauer ?
@@dennishaas4745that he's blackballed by POS Selig
They need a starter for the five slot. If they had a competent GM he would trade for a 1A/2 to pair with Gray and move everyone else down a slot. But you would have to believe what you said about this team being able to compete, remember that Mo?. But then you would have to add a bat too.
Where would the bat play?
@@bschaeffer12Centerfield
The bat he referenced is in Memphis.. they won’t trade for a bat
@bschaeffer12
Honestly, get a third baseman to split time and DH with Arranado. It's obvious he has back and elbow problems and maybe he starts hitting better if he's not playing in the field every day. He won't like it but that's what Mo is paid to do.
Hard Yes they do plus legit bat.
Libby might have something to say about it 😊
If they hope to have a chance in the post they better pick up at least one good starter, preferably two! Otherwise it will be one and out like they did the last time they got into the post.
Gibson and Lynn could piggyback on the third wild card game if it came to it.. but I’d assume if they got a #2 Mikolas would get that 3rd game
At what point do you know that maybe they are not where you want them but you allow your aa or aaa pitchers a chance.
That's a valid question. I understand it for sure. I don't know. But they haven't gotten their yet, clearly.
Without a doubt, get another starter maybe bullpen piece, this club is going to hit, the talent is there plus help is coming off the injured list pitching pitching pitching
For sure!
Things are finally coming together with the offense and pitching been hanging in there. Not having Middleton and O'Brien has stressed the pen and Matz perpetual time on the IL. has stretched the starters. To really have a chance in the playoffs, they will need another Gray caliber pitcher. Two pitchers would be even better, but the best available. We have a lot of people we can package in deals. Matz was done 2 years ago. They dogged O'Neill as an injury prone player, then penciled Matz into the starting rotation again. 😳
Brenden did not just say that ownership needs to raise the payroll?? Are we in bizaro-land? Some alternate universe?
For 2025 I think they'll just have to accept that Matz's 11 million doesn't count. That's essentially what I was getting at.
@@bschaeffer12 Human sacrifice! Cats and dogs living together! Mass hysteria!
Yes, the teams need to stop letting Jace Frelick and the Brewers win (whatever their made players are named)
🤣
Can we not find a better option at DH then Matt Carpenter??? He was signed as a clubhouse guy that can't play anymore n hes our starting DH?? WE'RE A PLAYOFF TEAM. Call anybody up or trade for other teams bench player. He's 464 in WAR of just position players. 30 teams 9 starters = 270. Theres 200 bench players better then our current starting DH
He's a good vet presence but offense leave some to be desired. Remember though he was supposed to be bench. Herrera Nootbaar and Edman all out.
Seriously the cardinals need a 5th starter pallante can’t go 5or 6 innings
