I'm American. I wanna learn Assyrian. Is there any remnants in the current language that still survive from the ancient Assyrians ? If I'm not mistaken modern Assyrian is closer to Aramaic ?
yes, it's closer to Aramaic. As far as I know, I've never seen a class or anything that will teach you the language. Most people don't know what Assyrian exists (and I've lived in 3 different states and 7 different towns within those states) Even when I was in elementary school, a student teacher became enraged with my class cause a couple of students, including myself, said we were Assyrian, and she thought we were pulling a prank on her.
I’m living in Turlock, California and Turlock adult school district offered Assyrian classes for those who interested. Also, most of Assyrian churches have weekly classes to teach our language.
If you speak in mostly sound effects and flailing hand gestures, you're practically fluent.
