    Both sides of the Dan Burn debate were proven right yesterday. The goal exposed his lack of pace to that pass but he had a very good game afterwards and therefore it's easy to see why Eddie would want to show to the player that he has faith in him. Good man management by Howe.
    We lack energy in midfield, our forward play is too slow at times, too predictable. But it's a big 3 points and we have to be grateful for that.

      Yes, I agree. He makes that block in stoppage-time that protects the points. He did the same at Villa repeatedly early on. He's good at reading danger. For the Elanga goal, I also feel it was a collective - midfield + Burn + Botman + Dubravka.

      Yep, too easy to blame one individual but I expect there was a collective sinking feeling when that goal was scored given it was exactly the scenario people were predicting would happen. Unfortunately people are always gonna point to that lack of pace every time we concede a similar goal but the fact is, not many players would keep up with Alenga anyway.

      I think Howe’s knows this hence formation switch. Now, did it work? Not so sure… we controlled possession without controlling the game after about 15. I personally would have Tino in for Burn and revert Burn to cover CB (and LB when needed). Burn is a quality player but without big Joe in front of him his lack of pace is exposed. He is a unique player and offers a lot when we switch to 3 at back. It’s not a straight forward call although as I said I’d be playing Tino (or Hall, remember him) when we can’t protect from midfield. However, this isn’t Howe playing his favourites… he thinks BDB on pitch gives us something extra (and he was right last season) but he’s realised in a 433 without Joe it doesn’t work. Will be interesting to see what Howe thought of yesterday when he reviews it and if he perseveres or makes the call to bring Tino in.

      I don’t know whether all this criticism is because Newcastle fans are just not used to watching a good team (since Robson/Keegan days anyway) and think that every game they should be wiping out teams. I remember the Man Utd team winning the title with about eight 1-0 wins usually scored by a bit of individual brilliance from cantona and shmichael and everyone else just making up the numbers. Come on stop being so negative, they’ve started winning games again and picking up points and look good for a top 7 finish May be top 6 who knows. They’ll improve next year and May be the year after and won’t be fighting relegation. Reality check needed I think.

I'm still baffled by the decision to play dan burn against elanga again today albeit you say he made a crucial tackle towards the end. However i'm beginning to worry that there is an air of stubbornness in eddie howe's selections. It feels like we got away with playing dan today rather than it being a great call by eddie. But we bag the points & we move on. Let’s see what we get on the toon wheel of fortune next weekend. Cheers as always craig.

      Not a penalty in my opinion: irrelevant whether Dubs was raising his arm or not as the Notts. Forest player contacted his armpit which would have been the same whether the arm raised or not. He also came across the line the ball was travelling to contact Dubs. The referee, although not ideally placed, gave the right decision; it can't always be a penalty because a player runs into a goalkeeper. Unfortunately you just know if circumstances had been that VAR had called the referee to the monitor then it would have been given.

We just seem to be able to score and be defensively frail at the same time. That's due to somewhat of a lightweight midfield and a slow defence. Tonight showed more than ever why we need a 6. One for the defensive cover and 2 Bruno is further up-the pitich and he can show his class.

    @EeeeenSH Před 3 měsíci +63

    You're not listening to what a lot of fans are saying about BDB, Craig. For sure there are some dullards whining their keks off about DBD the player, but I get the impression most of us are more concerned about the way BDB is being used, rather than the player himself and all the good things he brings to the team. You've just applauded him for something he did in the 94th(?) minute when we had another player on the park at left-back. Something else you alluded to is what this must be doing to his head. I'll suggest to you that Eddie Howe's insistence on playing him at left-back against teams with pace to burn, is doing the lad's head in. He doesn't need that and neither does the team. Eddie Howe's lack of flexibility is the issue here and I suspect that because you think that the sun shines out of Eddie's backside, you're not the journalist who is ever going to have the courage to tackle him about it. Are you?

    • @geordiedog1749
      @geordiedog1749 Před 3 měsíci +12

      Interesting.
      I think one of the problems Eddie Howe has is that he doesn’t particularly want to disclose to other managers his thinking about tactics and why should he?! He picks Dan, I think, because he has bags of experience, does exactly what he is instructed, is huge and un-intimidateable and works well in - for the most part in the ‘three at the back out of possession’ formation w we use. He also picks him because he sets a very specific tone in the dressing room ie this is our club and you will die for them, right? I ran youth teams for over 20 years. I remember having these two excellent players but we played better without them ‘cos they were popular and influential kids and they saw it all as a bit of a laugh on a Sunday morning and got them out of church. The lad I made captain was a very average footballer but he lived for the game on Sunday and was able to set the tone of the team to match his attitude. And I think that’s BDBs ‘secret sauce’. He sets the tone (along with some of the others, of course). Also, it’s our team that expose the defence to a counter attack. Some people need to pick up,a coaching manual , open the index and go look up “consecutive errors”. If Tino had started the match held have still been second best in a leg race with Elanga. Possession was given away in the Forrest right hand side corner and no one was minding the half space on our right which is where the ball was played ( extremely well) from. To be honest, I’m more concerned about the stupid free kicks and penalties he gives away than his ‘lack of pace’.
      I think Craig can be too self congratulatory at times, emphasising things he alluded to earlier and pairing them as expert analysis (and he probably has to do this to a degree - this is the Mail we’re talking about here) He also,like to present himself as the tough journo who asks the difficult and tough questions despite the consequences which I’ve seen exactly zero evidence of in this regime (partly because there hasn’t really been any such is the way the club is being run by actual grown ups and Craig sure as shinola ain’t gonna bring up the whole Saudi regime issue) Sure, he was unpopular with Steve Bruce bits that’s like Neville Chamberlain saying ‘don’t forget who unpopular I was with Hitler.’

      @Mr.OakMountain Před 3 měsíci +6

      I agree 100%!
      What Eddie says in the post match interview makes me wonder though, "we have to learn of our mistakes and flaws". Well, when is HE going to learn? DB is a CB, not a LB! Our shocking deffence record says it all.. Makes me wonder what the owners are thinking. Why on earth are they going to pay top dollars for new players, when the manager refues to play them, ie Livramento and Hall.. Theese are errors managers like Guardiola doesn't make. The main reason for our inconsistent form.
      I'm concerned that Eddie's loyalty towards DB will in the long run cost us (even more) and his job eventually. As much as I love Eddie, I'm starting to believe that he's not the man to take us to the next step.

      I would agree on that; if you watch the goal you see that Elanga has a running start on Burn, which enables him to go past him, but after that in the chase Burn actually keeps up with him. It is a matter of technique and anticipation with Burn. The attacker is anticipating the through ball and sets off, Burn reacts too slowly to the pass and the players movement, Botman the same. Sometimes Burn is caught too square on. I think he is surprisingly quick for a big man.

    I think the 1 star should have gone to Schär for an expert finish when we really needed it. Wilson getting injured over an unnecessary wrestling match is absolutely stupid. I agree with you, this match had absolutely zero control. The manager clearly led everyone to believe Gordon would not be involved. It is embarrassing really. There is no advantage to be gained by such antics. Teams prepare for every eventuality these days. They are not just going to throw their plans away based on what the opposing manager says on the press conference.
    The whole team is disjointed and lacks cohesion. Dan Burn got roasted today too and it was coming. The fans pointed out how quick Forrest were, and it seems only the manager did not believe such analysis. Everyone else was covering their eyes in horror. Very poor start in the 2nd half again. No subs at half time, no one stepping up to take responsibility. Goal keeper is not sure how to command his box and we get in trouble again when the ball is played behind the defence. If the penalty was given we could hardly complain.
    I will say this, Big Dan Burn did not lose his head despite the mistake. He did okay once we went to 3 CBs and he defended the box well on the late onslaught from Forrest. The team is not convincing at all but Bruno did put in a 3 star performance. Let us hope they can build on this.

    I wonder if part of the reason he plays Burn is to make teams more predictable in their approach against us, i.e. we know they will try and attack that side more so we can try and prevent it before it gets near that side of the pitch, problem is it relies on players higher up having good awareness of whats behind them and we are a bit short of options in midfield at the minute in that regard.

    • @Nienna1837

      The reason he is playing BDB is because he is stubborn and thinks he will show us he won't cave to criticism. He is not reading social media according to himself but he also thinks he is getting slaughtered which is quite accurate. Playing an obvious weakness against the fastest wingers is a recipe for disaster. This is no 5D chess. Our midfield 3 get bypassed so often, our keeper is nervous as hell and does not know if he wants to come out or retreat to the very edge of the goal line, it is absolute chaos. I wish he simply picks Tino and be done with it.

    Schar should definitely have been up there in the merit stars. Not just for the goal, but he was the main passer with no Bruno sitting deep. He was the one providing the outlet balls (usually long to Gordon) or carrying it himself. Meanwhile, all the defensive frailties came from the left i.e. Burn/ Botman side. In many ways, Schar did even better than Bruno because Bruno lost it a few times in midfield dangerously.

    Ok let’s start with BDB. Had a warning and then they scored, yes his man and no pace to keep up but botman and the keeper weren’t great either. It’s the whole
    Defence that looks shaky. Conceding far too many goals. The pen claim I didn’t think was a pen but have seen them given, he lost control, lost balance and was looking for it. But how a ball straight down the middle from the keeper got through shows how bad our defence is currently. Should never happen !!
    Their first we had all 3 midfielders up front and no protection again, simple pass out destroyed us. We need one to hold back, surely they can think that in the field at the time.
    Took our goals well and eventually went 5 at the back which helped also. It’s a win and we move on. We are getting better but last 14 games we should be winning most I think. Hope to make Europe and would take 6th now if you offered it to me.

    I swallowed my disappointment about Eddie getting job when it looked for a while like he'd not wasted his time off and he'd added defensive stability to offensive skill. A great season when everything went right has been followed by too much proof that he's second rate when anything goes wrong. I pray that the lack of support in transfers mean he's in last chance territory with Saudis and there working on a first class manager.
    BTW Craig's lack of addressing the Saudi question is a positive ; until USA (and others) ownership is treated as evil I don't want to hear a thing about saudi being a terrible place. Biden kills as many houthis as MBS and I'd rather linzi smith was in SJP than a Pride flag.

    You keep going on about control in midfield but we have 4 midfielders out and we are playing a 17 year old who is learning game by game. Also Sean Longstaff who gives his all in every game but is not the controlling midfielder your looking for
    that is why we signed Tonali to replace him.

    NOBODY genuinely thinks that was a penalty. Ridiculous. Could even have had a yellow for diving
