As a Bharatnatyam student, I know how much it hurts, staying in half-sitting positions and the toe-taps, especially in Varnams, where the music is about 17 minutes long. When I performed Varnam for the first time on stage, I was out of breath, my legs were hurting and my throat was dry. The costume, jewellery and makeup didn't help either. Hey guys loved your reaction! I am a trained Bharatnatyam dancer so I would like to give my two cents on the little knowledge that I have of the dance. The dance could be summarised as clean lines, powerful footwork and sculpturesque poses, which require a certain level of control of the body, not forgetting the importance of facial cues/expressions. Here Devi Durga, is slaying the demon Mahishasura, from what I know of the story, at the end the dancer(durga), drinks his blood after slaying him depicting her rage, and the destruction of evil.

  • @wayofacceptanceischange4390

She is destroying rakthabeeja the demon who could multiply with every drop of blood .
She as good durga can't destroy him she grew in anger and she turned in to the form of godess kali .
    She slaughtered demon .
And with her speed (indravegini a name of kali means as fast as lightning)collected all the blood in a wessel that she holds when the vessel was full she out of no choice and out of rage towards the demon for hurting all her children including insects , animals, birds ,humans ,snakes , gods etc .she drunk the blood of the demon .
But demon blood as she is pure form energy when she consumed impure demon blood got intoxicated and started to kill every demon in her path and then she turned towards all came in her path to prevent them from harm through her she ran in to the vicinity of the universe and danced the shakthis dance of death called shakthi thandava the dance of energy which made all forms of energy to raise and go out of control literally all godesses who where a part of durga began to feel the rage in them .
Then shiva who really loved her decided to sacrifice himself .
Thus came undr her legs and she accidentally stepped on to Shiva's heart and then she realised she had stepped on the heart that loved her only her .
She out of realising her mistake sticked her 👅 tongur out then cried her agony of hurting shiva her husband .
Shiva hugged her as she turnedback to her non fearce calm form parvathy ,who became durga .
Parvathi is a part of supreame energy called parashakthi .
Parvathi is considered form of godess adishakthi .

The beauty of the song is how a single devnagari letter or syllable is repeated over and over in each stanza. They have chosen specific words with that letter to create the poetry as well as have same syllable in them in one stanza. And it is a long beautiful poem. One of my favorite.
The dance was beautiful. And bharatnatyam is actually natyam (drama) in dance form.

There r many interpretation of the same by many dance groups. The Dance form is Bharatha Naatyam! One of India's oldest Classical dance form which most of us Hindu believe Directly imparted from our Almighty Divine Head Shiva and Parvati to Bharatha munni sage. He wrote the rules and codified ,established the dance form. There r 2 different schools of teaching as far as I remember it. The song is abt Maa Durga - a form of Divine mother sleighing a Demon Mahisha Ashura. Facial expressions along with hand gestures with rhythmic footwork r hallmark of this Dance form. 9 majors Emotions r expressed ( in many different style) according to the composition they r dancing for. This form of classically trained dancer can pull off any emotions on Big screen. Many good actors and actresses of yester years and of today r Classically trained too.like, Vyjayanthi maala 80+ Hemamalini 70+ of age still performing on stage. SriDevi, Shobana, Aishwarya Rai, Adhithi Rao Hydri ,Kamal Hassan, Vineeth r few examples. Most south Indian kids learn this dance form as early as 5 years of age.

Mahishasur was the demon who was blessed by lord Shiva (the destroyer), that no God on this planet should ever be able to defeat him. Lord Shiva had no choice since he couldn't deny a worshiper. Mahishasur then starts destroying Earth. Since no God could ever defeat him, Durga(wife of Shiva) decided to destroy him as she is a Goddess, not God. She comes down to the earth and kills him. That posture was Durga eating the demon symbolizing the good eating and destroying the bad.

Actually the wish is not to be killed by man or animal. He excludes women as he thinks women are beneath his power to be considered as an enemy. Like many stories say.... The bigger the EGO... The harder the person falls ... Since then we still remember durga by the demon's ego... Point to learn... No creature is beneath anyone or anything...

It takes almost entire childhood to youth to Master the Classical movements with tons of practice every day. And then the initiation Arangetrum is when then the Dancer starts to perform on her/his own. Just plain LOVELY, Thank you. :)
