What tastes even better is staying away from packaged items and try to eat whole foods as much as possible! Better for your health which is PRICELESS! And much cheaper than diabetes, high cholesterol, inflammation, etc! And when this is not possible I choose organic and items with the least amount of processing! Read your labels and stay healthy because at the end of the day regardless of how inexpensive it is you are worth having great health! Stay well ya’ll!
Sure mentioned that… that this video is specifically about packaged goods tho homemade great way to go!
When I was first married (20 years ago), my husband was the only one working and I was a stay at home mom. I was relentless in knowing what the best deals were. I wrote everything down price per unit, watched sales, use my coupons, etc… I still do this and we save so much money compared to most other people I know. I love Aldi for items that I don’t coupon for but watch the sales at Kroger closely too. For example, the yogurt cups for the kids’ lunches are .52 at Aldi. Yoplait was on sale for .80, plus a $3 coupon on 10 and rebate. Don’t was cheaper for me to purchase the name brand in that case. I do this comparison with everything and thankfully my working memory for grocery prices is pretty good.
Jennifer, I love this! Knowing the best prices by heart is something I want to get better at. Thank you for sharing this ❤️
I always get the store brand, but I had no clue how much of a difference it really did make. That’s crazy!
I wish we could share this video with the world! So many people upset (rightfully) about food prices but fail to see the options to stretch their dollars. I would love to see a meal comparison with name brand versus store brand items. I just loaded up my chest freezer with vegetables (we live in the north and it's soup season) all store brand. I bought 16 bags for roughly 18.00. I paid 1.09 name brands in my area are 2.52. So 17.44 versus 40.32. Great video!
Using the share button below the video gives you the opportunity to share it with some of the world.
If you put the bags of frozen veggies in vaccum sealed bags, like a Food Saver, they will last twice as long in the freezer.
I would like you to give your family taste tests on these items and see if they can tell any difference. Just for fun😊
It’s true my dad for years worked at a milk factory. They would make so many with the brands sticker on it then so many of the great value sticker. So same milk just different price 👍🏼
I don't always buy the store brand. But now I see how much can be saved, I'll make an effort to buy store brand.
Thank you for the information. I really appreciate all your hard work.
Just try them out. You never know. Happy New Year and best wishes 🤗
Can you do a videos of your cooking? Like a cooking show with the store brand ideas !? That will be exciting and educational to watch! Help me cook!!!!
Completely agree. I always buy store brand and aldi. Sooo much money saved and almost identical ingredients. Only time I won’t go cheaper is if there is a bad ingredient the main brand doesn’t have, but I’ve found that quite often the name brand will have worse ingredients anyways.
I also would love for you to see you cooking some of the dishes you eat.
I've always purchased store brands, and I love Aldi. My husband quickly learned. EVERY little bit adds up of savings.
Hi Jennifer 👋🏻
Store Brands for the win.
I've got a healthier and cheaper swap for the microwave popcorn. Buy the store brand bottle of popcorn kernels and a pack of paper lunch bags. We put 1/3 cup of kernels in a bag, roll the top down, and microwave just like the packs. Top with a little butter and popcorn seasonings.
I do the same thing. So easy and healthier too, even if you do add butter! 😋
We have a silicone popcorn 🍿popper. It's true, you save a considerable amount over microwave bags...& it's healthier. The silicone popper is only about $15. & can be used over & over, goes in the dishwasher & it collapses.
I knew the store brand was less expensive . However I was surprised how much less expensive. Thank you for doing this comparison.
This was very surprising! I would not have guessed you would have saved that much money by the store brand… Keep up the good work
Walmart use to have the best buttermilk ranch salad dressing many years ago, it was delicious. Suddenly, it was off the shelf. 😢
it was eventually replaced but it was never the same.
Patricia, it is disappointing when brands change the recipe and it's not as good.
Yes I would love to see an Aldi comparison too. We are gf so unfortunately not everything is able to be swapped in my house but I do what I can.
Veronica, have you checked out Aldi's gluten free section? I've heard it is good.
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK yes and they do have some things but it is very limited in my area. I hope they expand on some items. I also find that Aldi puts wheat in things that you would never expect it to be in so I have to be very careful.
I rarely buy store brands but I will wait for a sale on the brand name items and stock them. I check the weekly sales at three different supermarkets to compare the products prices and used coupons if available. Also holiday seasons are the best time to get sales on food items.
I was surprised that your store brand is the same as my store brand. I bought lots of Harris Teeter store brands in my pantry right now. I buy a lot of store brand stuff, but I do buy one name brand that you used as the comparison. I prefer Land 'O Lakes butter, because it has the half sticks. I never buy it unless it's on sale. Butter freezes really well. Harris Teeter has great sales, and I have 3 of their stores nearby. The largest HT store is about 1 1/2 miles from my house. Before I retired, I'd go there in the middle of the night, because I worked night shift at the ER. The night shift cashier told me Mr. Harris shopped at that store. HT isn't open all night anymore. Thanks for the videos. I've learned a few things watching them, and I like the way your present things. You're organized and don't waste my time with superfluous chatter.
Return them! 😆 I would love to see you cooking. We could do with adding more vegetarian dishes into our rotation. That was a great video, even for me in Ireland.
Yes store home brands can be cheaper, but you also need to look at unit price of the ounces and ML as it can be cheaper to buy either smaller bottles then one large bottle for example.
I would be interested in some of meal recipes you mentioned. Black bean burgers sound yummy!
I've found that I won't eat the store brand of lasagna, therefore when I buy it I buy the name brand. Depends on the item and how often. More wasteful to buy an item that ends up trashed.
In my cluntry sometimes the store brands are the same than the named brands, made in the same factory with same ingredients. You just need to look closely.
I really liked your comparison video, would love to see some more
Sometimes I like to do a direct compare of a branded version of an item and it's generic equivalent, to see if there's any difference in it's performance.
Most of the time I find no difference, rarely I find the branded item performs better, very rarely I find the generic brand performs better!
It definitely saves a small fortune to buy generic, but there's a few things I'm brand specific about.
I love the taste of saving money, especially on a fixed income!
You are one of my favorite posters on this topic bc your approach is logical and detailed rather than shaming us for not being thrifty enough.
I mostly buy store brands except in a few cases when we prefer name brand due to taste.
I also watch for sales. If the name brands are on sale at a cheaper price then I buy what is cheaper.
I have found store brands cleaners, paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, and wipes work fine.
I would love a store brand vs aldi video
Wow Jennifer you are so correct about this price differences I noticed that in our stores in south africa too 👍
Costco’s Kirkland brand AA and AAA batteries are made by Duracell and cost way less.
thank you for this, I had no idea you could save close to 50% with store brands!
I've always purchased store brands, and I love Aldi. My husband quickly learned.
Great video Jennifer! Thank you for sharing this information. There is one item that only the name brand will suffice in my family and that is mayo. We have tried the store brands and they are definitely a no go. Would love for you to share some of the recipes that you mentioned in this video. Long ago you did a video on vegan crab cakes. It is now on our monthly menu.
Lucy, that is one of my favorites! I need to do one big video with all of my favorites. I've found a few more good ones since the chick pea crabcakes.
Everything I buy is store brand except sliced cheese. I remember when my daughter was a teen she would make comments about store brand food in our home. Now that she is 36 and living on her own she understand why I bought store brand. :)
This doesn’t apply to me because I’m the outlier and make everything from scratch and grow a garden so my food bill is only 150 a month or less and that feeds myself and my 80lb Doberman who I cook for. I agree more should try to make things from scratch, plus eat more Whole Foods as there is a huge health epidemic.
This is a great video and I hope you get a ton of likes for taking the time and spending money on name brands to help others. 🌱💚
My dad worked in a warehouse. When they would open a box of a clothes soap, on the outside of the box was tide, but on the inside it was a generic store brand. Go figure.
There are some store brands that taste just like the name brand, you just have to figure out which ones and then buy them consistently. One of them is Jiff Peanut Butter. Aldi has a brand, just make sure the ingredients show roasted peanuts, salt and sugar.
That butter and cream cheese alone was 14 dollars 😮.
I work at a company where we private label items to sell at Aldi,Kroger's Meijer ect
Thank you! I remembered I had great people who watched my channel that had mentioned this before.
Yes I love these comparisons.
What would be interesting is differences between store brand vs Aldi or Lidl
Sometimes the store brand is BETTER! 😂❤
I was nodding in agreement the whole way thru, Jennifer ...
Along time ago we switched to store brand saltines. The ones we get taste just like the name brand but are $1.99 instead of over $4 !! We buy a lot of store brands. The one thing we won't buy, tho, is store brand sour cream. Daisy is just cultured cream, nothing else. We don't want the stabilizers & gelatin in sour cream. But you bet we buy store brands. Many are every bit as good as name brands & look at the price difference! Close to half the cost all totaled. That adds up to major savings quickly .
Yes, please, more of these...but your poor budget! Maybe you could just jot down the prices of the name brands so your poor budget doesn't suffer & you won't cringe when you check out. 😊
We have a collapsible, silicone popcorn 🍿popper. About $15. Dishwasher safe. No oil needed. Pops quickly. Costs considerably less to do it that way as opposed to the bags of microwave popcorn which can have other ingredients that aren't so good for you. Just get a bag of popcorn kernels. Usually only a couple bucks for a couple pounds!
Would you mind posting your recipe for the black bean burgers? Thank you!!
I think you can always add spices to your dish and bring it up to your own taste
Thank you for doing this, it's very helpful to see how much of a saving you can make. I live in Spain and over the past year have switched to many generic brands too, however, there are some named brands I buy, such as a chicken broth as the generic ones I have seen contain monosodium glutamate, a flavour enhancer so be sure to read the ingredients. Bless you for your effort to encourage us to save money. I love your channel.
I’m all about store brand! Sometimes it might depend on the store though. I trust Kroger store brand, but have had some pretty nasty substitutes from other places. The only thing I’m particular about is dairy when I’m making specific things. For example,I use store brand sour cream on almost anything, but if I’m making a dip I want Daisy. That’s sort of thing.
I agree! Kroger brand is good! That's the saltine crackers I mentioned in my comment.
WHOA!!!! 🤯 Well that was eye opening! I try to buy organic whenever possible, but I'm definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for more generic brands going forward! Thanks for doing this video!!!!!! ❤
I buy store brands (mostly Aldi) on probably 90% of what I buy. There are some things that the store brand is just not as good! I always look for sales and stock up on these items when I can. A few items I will only buy named brand include sour cream (either Daisy or Lucerne) and for cream cheese, it has to be Philadelphia!
Wow! Mind blowing!! I do use some store brands….but going to make a new New Year’s resolution to use a lot more. Thank you! Great video!!
Great video!
I love it. This was great. I enjoy store brands. After this video will seek out more. I love Aldi. Very interested on your research there. I use a lot of their store brands. Thanks judy
I’d say that it’s the same foods most often that get put into different brands tins and packages. Same stuff Different prices. We’ve been a store brands family for years although we cook from whole foods for the most. Thanks for sharing info for folks to contemplate.
I always buy store brands, so I’m in the right track so far! 😅
There are certain things I always buy name brand, like laundry detergent and dish soap. That's mainly due to skin allergies. But things like canned veggies, pasta, flour, suger...all are store brand. There is one thing that I always buy name brand but very rarely and that's ice cream! 😊 I never thought of swapping out the BBQ & Honey Mustard. I'll have to check it out.
I agree about ice cream. Boy, the El cheapo is awful. It lacks flavor & creamy texture.
@@patwagner9308So agree on the cheap icecream. I love icecream but it doesn't love me back so it's a treat for me. Plus I have major portion control problems with it.😄 I get the best quality I can and in pints!
I bought Trader Joe's brand for years.
Yes, store brand vs aldi please!
Yes, please 🙏🏾
Yes the pricing is better BUT today I actually questioned is the name brands healthier. Sodium , sugar etc.
I can remember when "generic" was white label with black lettering.
Rofl😂😂😂😂watching to forward to a friend who declined a bag of store brand popcorn...
Store brands are disappearing from the shelves faster. Name brands are still there. Make sure you can tweak your meal plan as to not have to purchase the higher priced name brand.
Lol. When I moved back from Chicago after several years, I couldn’t stand the pizza down here…for awhile. Then of course I got used to it eventually.
I would say now that the only thing I’m “snobby” about is my one fave bread, my Marie’s blue Chz and my Classico pasta sauce. Occasionally some nicer cheese lol. Pretty much all else is whatever is cheap or clearance or store brand or on sale. Fortunately my main grocer has a lot of good knock offs. Lol. But usually I just wait for Classico to go on sale and I stock up. And at times I can find the bread for free at a local charity. And Marie’s usually lasts me awhile. Several months. I think worth it. Some things are just not comparable and blue cheese is one of them. Lol.
Thank you for sharing the story of Chicago pizza 🤗 You mention you like nicer cheeses. If you have an Aldi near you, check out their cheese selection. It's amazing and at a great price.
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK Ooh. IKR. Omg cheese. Im hopeless. 😅😅 A lot of times I’ll find it marked down at Kroger also. I guess the tricky part about that is that I’ll find something that is sooo good marked down. Fall in love with it. And then want more and it won’t be marked down. Lol. But I still just take it as a treat. It’s just way too expensive to buy all the time. Some pretty good cheeses go on sale regularly also such as Cabot and Tillamook etc. But that one Parmesan in the bag is to die for (just very pricy lol). Pizza and Italian are my faves tho.
It's so much less at Aldi. You have to try it and let me know what you think. Hugs 🤗
@@THEJENNIFERCOOK Lol. Most def I will. Thanks!! And of course fresh Mozz balls and Gouda. 😅😅 Good thing I religiously take my probiotics. Lol.
Just about fell off my chair at how cheap food is in America. I understand that it’s all relative but those listed prices are DIRT CHEAP compared to where I live in Canada. Veggie broth is $6.99 for regular and higher for organic. Mind you, minimum wage is $15/hour now and folks are still starving.
I don't doubt you almost fell out of your chair. That is a HUGE difference! My mouth hit the ground when I just read how much broth is there.
Wow
Please share your black bean burger recipe.
When I shop at H.E.B. I buy their brand.
Team generic all the way..... BUT I will not compromise on Heinz ketchup.
I’m kind of new to your channel. You mentioned recipes in this vid. Can you share them with me Thanks
Hi Linda, first welcome! Second, several people have mentioned me sharing those recipes, so I will work on a video to do so. 🤗
❤😊
I usually buy store brands, but I hate store brand biscuits/dinner rolls
Kate, I completely understand, and sometimes there isn't even a store brand version of an item.
❤🎉
I love your channel but when it comes to food I have to respectively disagree with you. There ARE different benchmarks for items produced and nutritionally speaking cheaper items generally are higher in added sugar and sodium. I know this isn't always the case, but with how prevalent diabetes and hypertension are I would strongly urge consumers to read nutrition labels. Hospital bills are very costly too.
I agree that we should all watch out for added sodium and sugar as much as possible. Happy New Year to you, Nicky 🤗
When I was a student, one of my classmates had a summer job at a cannery. One of her tasks was to change the labels on the canning lines. She went home and told her mother to stop buying name brands.
Wow! Thank you for sharing this story 🤗
