    Indeed. Dirty hair doesn't grow faster. What's happening when you leave your hair in let's say some cornrows, the "growth" is actually you retaining length. It's not breaking because it's not being _manipulated._ Protective styles are good, but if you want actual growth from the scalp, keep it clean so those pores won't be clogged! Also, the natural hair specialist in this video looks so young! Good on her for starting so early if she's as young as I think she is!! 😄

    • @zheahra

      Half true. She said that if you don't moisture your ends prior to braiding your hair it will break off. Yes, your hair will grow regardless of the style you put it in. There are some styles that can pull and rip your hair at its roots, e.g. tight braids or ponytails. However, you won't retain length by braiding dry, brittle, damaged hair. Manipulated hair does require more trims.

    That sulfates are bad and grease dries your hair out. I use both and ever since my hair has been absolutely thriving. The problem is people don’t realize grease is a SEALANT. Meaning you have to add something moisturizing underneath and then seal with grease. You then wash grease out with sulfates, and sulfates definitely isn’t drying for everybody like most people claim they are, shampoos are meant for cleaning and clarifying, that’s why conditioners exist to follow up.

    I have low porosity hair and I wash my hair once a month and never had issues with clogged pores and my hair grows well because I know how to manipulate my hair. Honestly, a lot of the things say about porosity don't make sense. Why would porosity effect pores? Personally, i think it's more logical for high porosity hair to be washed more frequently along side more masks/deep conditioners as it loses moisture at a faster rate. People focus too much on low porosity hair being hard to moisturise but forget that once moisture is in, this hair type stays moisturised longer.

    Myth 1: Do not use grease, dries hair out Myth 2: air dry your hair, do not use heat cause it breaks of hair/makesnit brittle
    I have been natural (mix of 4b-4C) for 10 years now. After a while, noticed I had difficulties retaining moisture. Since natural I stopped using grease and any type of heat (except bagging and when cleaning scalp).This year I started heading back to using the basics: waterbased leave in product + GREASE (to conceal) and blowdryer (HEAT). I can't believe how moistured and bouncy my hair is after using the hairdryer, it really helps my strands suck up the moisture and the grease helps keep it for 2-3 days! I do wash my hair every 3-4 days tough. Never looking back, it doesn't have to be complicated.

      The heat is not doing anything for the moisture, but it helps to set the product and your coils, if you leave it air dry your hair is more prone to get frizz, which will cause your hair to *feel* dry and look dry, is not that is really dry, just use low heat to avoid heat damage, and you can use grease (hair grease, made for hair, not the crazy things people make themselves on the Internet) but property wash your hair, it will end up causing build up and making your hair more prone to breakage in the long term if you don't retire it because it really dries up your hair, but it makes your hair *feel* nice since it is lubricated

      @kittym96 Pƙed 3 lety +11

      I wouldn’t say it’s inaccurate because she gave good reasoning behind what she meant. Most braiders don’t put in a leave in conditioner (or any product but gel) on the hair and many now have clients come with their hair already washed and dried and instruct them not to add product. Furthermore, most people keep their braids in way too long and only focus on moisturizing the scalp (which is important) but forget the strands which are prone to break off with the weight of the added hair and the dryness from lack of product during installation. You said “I wash and deep condition the hair” which is something that most braiders (from professional to self-stylers) don’t do and that’s who she’s speaking to. These rules obviously aren’t one size fits all but to say it’s inaccurate due to your one personal opinion is unfair. But I do agree, when done properly, braids with extensions can be protective. It’s never a bad idea to suggest trying protective styles with your own natural hair. 💕

      @@sandradee3403 it sure did. It sealed all hydration out of my hair. I guess that's another myth, that is that oils and grease seal moisture in the hair. I had to understand the way how hair works. Shampoo lifts the cuticles of the hair strand; water gets in for maximum hydration; conditioner seals the hair. Conditioner is the sealant. Any stylers i.e gels, mousse, foams; help to style the hair, and no matter what you do your hair loses water by day 4. The only way to rehydrate is to shampoo and again. Hydration is a process, we help our hair become hydrated by using correct cleansing, conditioning and styling methods.

      @@nickyo3478 Yes they do. I agree. But when the RAW oils has penetrated the hair strand, where is the water suppose to go? And when you seal it with a butter or oil, how does water get back in the hair? I don't know about you, but when I am thirsty I don't drink oils or butters. Why should the hair be any different? This is when proper cleansing comes into play.
      A good experiment would be to take a cup/glass and mix your oil and butter mixture in it, they blend well together right? Now add water. Does it blend? Ok, now get your favorite cleansing product add to the mixture, and drain, is there still residue in the glass? Or is it clean? Add some more of your butter/oil mix again and do the process to stimulate how often you wash for a month. Is the glass clean? Or is there residue and how much? Whatever is in the glass is sitting on the hair blocking water from getting in. What happens to the body when it can't drink water? Another thing is to look at the ingredients of your products, most already have oils and butters formulated well within them, to be beneficial to the hair and not block the hair from receiving it's hydration. So there is no need to add more.

    I believe that braids are a protective style. I never put my hair in any style without moisture and a oil to seal it in. I have medium-high porosity hair. I like to straighten my hair on 350 before I get it braided that way when I take it down its soft and silky as I straighten it with a moisturizer and seal with an oil. Works for my hair. I give it a 2 week break in between styles though and leave it in for 1 month max.. My hair is soft and grows out to fast for my liking.

    Great info! Also I like to add that everyone is different....that includes hair. There is no one size fits all routine. As you try things pay attention to YOUR hair and adjust for you. Be patient. Experimenting is good but remember some results may not happen over night. Also constantly trying new things or making too many changes at once may create more issues. You may find yourself not knowing what's working vs what's causing damage. Focusing on one or two variables at a time gives you more control and clarity of what's going on with your hair. Lastly, LOVE YOUR HAIR. No matter what it's yours and it's beautiful just like YOU! Hair loves love too!
