Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland arrived on the stage in 2011 with a burst of colour, theatrical magic and inventive choreography. It was The Royal Ballet’s first new full-length work since 1995 and was greeted with delight by audiences. Joby Talbot’s score combines contemporary soundworlds with sweeping melodies that gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative sets and costumes draw on puppetry, projections and masks to make Wonderland wonderfully real.
Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary characters, from the highly-strung Queen of Hearts, who performs a hilarious send-up of The Sleeping Beauty's famous Rose Adage, to dancing playing cards, a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. Alice and the Knave of Hearts dance a tender, loving pas de deux of delicate beauty. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story - a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and the unhinged tea party are all created in vivid detail. - Zábava

1:18 Look at that split second where he goes in for a _kiss_ and she just _flitters_ off. Ha, that was too cute. 😁
I love the White Rabbit's facial expressions in the background. If you've seen the whole show, you know he's spent the entire time looking after these two crazy kids and especially trying to keep the Knave from getting caught, and now he can't disguise how happy he is for the both of them... it's so sweet.
Same! That can also be said for the Dormouse and the Dutchess near the end of the scene. The Dormouse leans into her as if wanting comfort while the Duchess puts her left arm around the Dormouse's shoulders in a half-hug.
@@elizabethcoen I know it's late, but the march hare and the hatter are arm in arm by the end too which i thought was sweet
do you notice how she slides en pointe a few times, and moves backward en pointe. ......unbelievable grace and beauty!!!!
+Karen Katz I could see tiler peck and robert fairchild dancing this!
Karen Katz ghfbvbb
Karen Katz sorry but it’s en pointe
Yeah, is she the best dancer they have? Love love love LOVE THIS!
yes i do.. its..amazing!
The subtle hints at a ticking clock in the movement are so beautiful wow
Elizabeth Frickey, there’s a clock motif in several of the suites from this ballet
Did you notice that when she swings her leg up and around it’s like a clock?
@@GrixieKong giselle?. Full performance
@@lefinlay ....
I never noticed it... wow
1:56 I LOVE THAT THEY MAKE A HEART! Very cute and creative :)
This whole dance is wonderfully choreographed, and masterfully performed
Can we please give some appreciation for Joby Talbot's music here? He has absolutely struck the perfect chord of dreamlike enchantment and innocent whimsy with this piece. Breathtaking.
You will get a lot more than "some" appreciation from me. I think the music is transfixing, throughout the ballet. I will put this score up there with Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Minkus, et al. The music for the Mad Hatter and the Caterpillar are especially great🎩🫖🧁🐛🍄👳🏾♂️
Hi, what is the name of the music used here?
💯 ❤❤❤
this is one of the most beautiful pas de deux I have ever seen and perhaps the most original
Good 👍🏽
I completely agree. Astounding. This entire production is amazing.
Very light and " floating ", feels like they are ice skating . Interesting choreography.
Feels like watching cirque du Soleil.
Bravo as always.
You know, the part of me that is a book purist wants to be annoyed at them putting romance in Alice but this pdd is so amazing it shut it down.
dot Kiarika the romance fits into the theme they had about growing up, since first loves are a part of growing into adolescence from childhood. They made it work
Worst things have been done with the Alice name. This is just plain beautiful
dot Kiarika frankly, I’m more scandalized at the purple outfit... Alice *always* wears blue!
Yeah that miffed me a bit, dot Kiarika, but the dancing is nice. I’m still a bit upset about the added romance though.
It’s spelled 'pointe'
any good dancer could dance this but a great dancer can tell the story, these are great dancers
Tbh only a great dancer can dance it and look good too! This is insanely difficult to make look good!
Guys part is fairly easy besides certain things and he's kinda paddling her and he's not supposed to unless she can't make the turn but she obviously can
As a dancer , THIS is what ballet is missing. New fresh fun ideas! I loved this ballet it’s one of my favorites . I am so tired of the same 15 ballets ! Where’s the new creativity ? New stories ? I’m sick of the nutcracker and sleeping beauty and Cinderella , and swan lake! Tell new stories thru ballet like Alice n wonderland. I wanna create a a new ballet and I can’t wait to do it one day
I would LOVE to see a ballet about Hades and Persephone. Or even about Morpheus and Iris.
While I can never get sick of those classics, it is really wonderful to see other classics remade as ballets. Also, they need to revive old ballet classics like Petrouchka, Les Sylphides, Ballo Della Regina, etc.
Or for that matter, "Eros and Psyche."
@@quentinbarrentine5114 Eros and Psyche are included in the Ballet 'Sylvia'! I went to see the Aussie ballet do it, unfortunately it seems like there are no clips of that ballet :( but it's beautiful, it also has Artemis and Ares and Sylvia and a mortal man (I'm blurry on that part) but it's all about greek mythos!
@@quentinbarrentine5114 omg I had to find you again but I found a video of the more recent rendition of Sylvia! it's called: Darcey Bussell - Sylvia - Royal Ballet
I don't know much about dance or choreography but I do know a thing or two about storytelling. And after watching the whole ballet, I love how they managed to tell what could have a difficult story through this ballet. So much of Lewis Carroll's appeal is through his clever wordplay and they still made the story interesting without it.
The Knave of Hearts leaning in for a kiss and her shyly but joyfully dancing away is my FAVORITE part. It's SO cute and perfectly conveys the innocence (and by extension, later on, loss of innocence) for Alice. ^_^
Note: Knave is a very old word for "prince" for anyone confused by his title.
Actually, knave is a very old word for a scoundrel, or in certain cases like the above, “jack” as in jack of spades/hearts/etc. Jack is a male valet. Not a prince.
From Wiktionary: Etymology. From Middle English knave, knafe, from Old English cnafa (“child, boy, youth; servant”), from Proto-Germanic *knabô (“boy, youth”), from Proto-Indo-European *gnebʰ- (“to press, tighten”), from Proto-Indo-European *gen- (“to pinch, squeeze, bend, press together, ball”).
The Knave of hearts is another one of the cards. He's the jack.
the Mad Hatter and March Hare look like the most proud dads in the world
I smiled the whole time. Loved when they make the heart shapes together
Me too, soo sooo beautiful :)
+Lupe Jelena I loved that part too!
Like mated swans
stunning. i love the choreography, the dancers, their chemistry, the music... simply beautiful
+Balletomane me too!
Love everything but the music... it fits, but it’s a bit boring
This is THE most beautiful Pas de deux I have EVER seen!
Yasss
AGREE! The music, the costume, the choreography, the performers, everything blend in perfectly!
I agree - and I always thought that some of the Pas de Deux’s in Sleeping Beauty were beautiful but this is beats even those!
I'm late af but if you liked this you have to watch Manon's pas de deux danced by Federico and marianela
@@veronicamassolin7587 Thanks :) def gonna check it out
1:54 I love this part so much. Such stunning work on the choreographer’s part-especially having them make a heart.
UGH THE WAY ALICE’S BODY FLOWS! She’s incredible and damn those ankles when she runs back on pointe! How?! Also I loooooove the sliding on the pointe shoes, it’s gorgeous
Props to her for not breaking character during the turns. I notice some ballerinas drop their face to focus, but she kept that smile throughout!
I love how they manage to maintain such a youthful atmosphere with this dance, it really suits Alice's character while being so technically intricate and beautiful
There's so much youth and innocence in this pas de deux.
The way she slide through the stage is breathtaking
This is straight up the most beautiful dance I've ever seen. The way the look at and dance with each other is as if they were the only 2 people in the world. I want to see this Ballet so freaking bad!!
Frederico is such a beautiful pas de deux dancer. He always pays so much attention and care to his partners, beautiful 💕
The music to this ballet is marvelous.
Gorgeous pas du deux! Sarah Lamb’s lightness and youthfulness in this dance really gives you a breath of freshness.
I love Sarah in these types of roles, she looks so young and full of life!
I was dancing to this, waltzing around my bedroom, lost in a fantasy, and suddenly tripped over a cord and had to hang on to my curtains for dear life to prevent myself from falling. What a way to come back to reality 😂
🤣🤣😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣😩😩👍🏾
I feel my muscles tense when she pliés to jump, and a mite terrified when she slides into him.

I've watched this lots of times since the ROH posted it and every time I love it more. Playful, lovely, Alice's first love perfectly portrayed. The way she rejects the kisses the first time... Looks like a real like teenage/kid love. Bravo!!!
ive watched it atleast 37 times for school
I'm very curious to know how she did the sliding without slipping on the other parts?
Well first she’s got resin on her shoes which gives her some grip in the first place, then she’s got very good core strength so she’s always got balance even if she’s sliding across the floor, she’s not going to stumble. Also, if you look closely when she’s sliding, she slides on the very cusp of the ball of her foot but ends the movement en pointe, it’s subtle but it’s there, so she leads herself into it? Incredible 😩😍
Its magic OoO
This was absolutely magical, just...wow. She looked as light as air and they moved together so beautifully and ahhh she’s so graceful and I love it
Wow. They look like they're having fun!!
The heart at 1:54! Beautiful, and the swell of the music, just lovely.
Lovely. The heart shapes they made were wonderful. And what a dynamic set, with the house of cards.
Their chemistry is AMAZING
I love the wonder on Sarah's face in this ballet and especially in this piece. It fits the show so perfectly and REALLY brings the character to life. She is the PERFECT Alice.
I come back to this from time-to-time and i can never get enough of sarah’s beautiful arches and footwork...
I don't get to watch much ballet but I've always been impressed with the male dancers' ability to lift fully-grown women like that with no apparent effort, especially with such skinny frames.
1:45
The arc she made with her body made me gasp out loud 😭 absolutely obsessed
This is my favourite thing ever. I found this four years ago and finally watched the whole ballet today. It's absolutely incredible and Lauren is exquisite.
Y'all see her slide?!?! Pure magic and talent, incredible!
So stirring... Probably the most beautiful pas de deux I could see...
1:38 this choreography is just magnificent
Beautiful choreography! So fluid....and the way she floats across the stage.....❤️❤️❤️
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen! Her Grace and his delicacy are mesmerizing.. they really captured Alice in the Wonderland with this ballet!
It feels so romantic and graceful! They created hearts through the dance and a love story was evident within the pas de deux. I've also noticed how they were able to be so in sync with each other that the girl was able to slide on point forwards and backwards. This is amazing!
This dance is magical.
I don’t even like ballet but I can help but come back to watch these Alice and wonderland dances every now and again. I suppose when a piece of art reaches a certain level it just captivates all audiences.
That little heart shape they made was so cute 🥺
They look like they are so in love! And she's light like a feather, like she's floating. I loved to watch this ❤️
MY favourite part of this ballet was actually the mad hatters tap solo
I think this is my favorite thing in the whole wide world. I'm crying.
She moves with such elegance it's like she is floating! Mesmerizing!
The music is fantastic and Sarah Sliding on point....just me very favorite ballet
One of the greatest pas de deux ever. Original and inspired. Truly marvelous.
This is my favourite pas de deux of all time! I would absolutely love to dance this one day!
Omg so beautiful. There was such a feeling of whimsy and her body just flowed like water. Stunning!
I didn't understand why people like ballet till now. This was stunning😍😍
This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen and heard in my entire life. Absolutely magical.
I loved this ballet; Talbot's music, Bob Crowley's design, and the very original and humorous choreography. I was delighted to purchase it on iTunes ...I'm also thrilled to see ROH responding to comments on this video page !!..You hardly ever see an American cultural institution being so courteous or considerate of their audience..
I didn't really get the Sarah Lamb hype until now. Wow! Gorgeous!
Grandeur, Simplicity, & an Enchanting Choreography. Outstanding performance & music!
saw this ballet in sydney 2017. fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!!!!!
As a kid, I wished our field trip was to see this instead of the Nutcracker. This would have kept my attention and made me appreciate ballet decades earlier.
THE CHOREOGRAPHY IS VERY BEAUTIFUL!!
So graceful and delicate. The chemistry is so amazing between these two.
The best ballet I have ever seen - the music -the dancing - the scenery - everything!
i need find this ballet complete :(
Feñis Loquis you can buy it on iTunes! :)

So thrilled this has been uploaded! One of the most touching pas de deux I've ever seen!
The flow of her dress is incredibly elegant; this is a stunning performance!
Some of the best ballet choreography (and dancing) I've ever seen!! So graceful and fluid
I couldnt take my eyes of her... such elegance and grace, it looked like she was floating the whole time! She made it look so effortless, a joy to watch! A beautiful choreography as well, this is very easily the most beautiful pas de deux ive ever seen!
This dance is breathtaking. The choreography and the dancers it just leaves me speechless. The dancers have great chemistry when they dance. Amazing grace and how smooth every movement was.
1:38 I totally love this part
Who created this choreography?? It has no business being this beautiful 😭😭😭😭
Christopher Wheeldon
Such a beautiful pas de deux, wonderful music and the choreography so original. The difficult and unusual steps are perfectly performed by Alice and Jack. Exquisite and enjoyable.
This is so beautifully done! I come back to it again and again! The technique is incredible but never distracting. The shapes and flow of movement with the enchanting music and the acting keep this so light and romantic that I'm transported and remember being a girl falling in love for the first time.
He is just an amazing choreographer. This duet is just exquisite.
Brilliant choreography, beautifully embodied in incredible talent & skill...
When the pandemic is over, I’m going to the ballet.
What beauty!! I wish I could see the whole ballet... music and choreography are just gorgeous here. And the performers are brilliant.
This pas de feud is the most romantic and beautiful ballet performance I’ve ever seen. Every little details was PERFECT! The choreography, the music, the costumes, the dancers, the technique, the part work, the musicality, the timing, chemistry- everything! Just beautiful. I love it.
I love her slides, I have never seen that before
I love this ballet, it is imaginative and magical and romantic all at the same time.
one of my favourite ballets of all time....the score is phenomenal
You have no clue how many times I’ve watched this now
wow very difficult pas de deux, but beautiful great job !!!
This must be magical to watch on set...Magnificent.
Good on the dancers, set design, story telling, and musicians!!!
This is why I love modern ballet.
I find the most atractive movent when Alice throws her torso back as her leg goes up and moves from left to right as the short hand of an accelerated clock.
This. Pas de deux. blew. me. AWAY. This is sooo beautiful and they make it look so easy!!! Amazing, amazing, amazing.
To be honest, I love this song. But my favorite is the beginning. With all the characters. But sad that I can't find it.
She slides. I have no words to describe their work ! I love it ;)
This is such a beautiful pas de deux are you kidding me !!!!!!!!
