Who knew you could make a holding tank sensor install interesting? Good on you, Mads!
I have enjoyed your videos for the last 4 years. You shouldn't be ashamed about your mess of hoses in the compartment, you should be ashamed for leaving your holding tank 3/4 full after you pulled out and left the boat for hurricane season forgetting to mitigate the risk of another poop disaster)))
Maybe the generator company customer service could take lessons from the head customer service lol
Not much danger of fischer panda taking a lesson from anyone, unfortunately
@@Anmeteor9663 Agreed. I'm just one of the Customers they have lost as a result. I had planned to attempt doing without an onboard generator, but my love of backups for backups has intervened. Although I won't be a heavy generator user, Solar, Wind and high output alternator being likely to cope most of the time, I will use a generator regularly to ensure everything stays in tip top Condition, along with regular servicing. Right now, I'm leaning towards a Cummins powered 7.9 kw just in case as that is a comfortable surplus above minimum needs. I like nicely oversized inboard diesel engines as well as Anchors and Winches tbh = less strains and stresses on everything. Best Wishes. Bob. 🤔👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️❤️
I have the same Elegance toilet and each time I have communicated with Raritan has been an excellent experience. I might recommend that you add 2 small angled blocks to the bottom of the seat so that when the seat is down there is absolutely no side to side movement that will eventually stress and break your new hinges.
Pam Wall the Crusing Consultant who does seminars at all the boat show recommends this exact mod. Using the head in a rough seaway puts stresses on the seat hinges that regular toilet seats never ever would see. We have yet to do this mod and our seat loosens up over time because of it. So far it has been easier to tighten it up occasionally than it would be to cut the little.wedges and epoxy them to the seat and paint them. We have yet to break the hinges but we are running a cheap seat from Home Depot since a small round bowl seat fits just fine on the Raritan porcelain thrones.
I just love your channel Mads. Although it is tecnically a sailing channel, I love your DiY stuff. Such an inspiration to watch.
Sailing = Boat Yoga.😱🤣👍
I recommend adding a 38 mm (1.5") hose from the top of the holding tank to a through hull above the water line to replace the tiny vent that's normally present on these tanks. That way, any overflow will run unimpeded over board, with zero chance of damage. Our Beneteau Oceanis 323 has this solution, and it's been great.
Well, Done Mads , once again, you amaze me with your abilities!
You have to drink every time Mads says "poop explosion". Ha ha ha.
Love your euphanisms for explanations Mads. Humorous but you get the point across.
Your technical explanation and how-to are always unmatched, Mads. You are second to none, and you've convinced me to use a SCAD Tm1 in my head instalation. As always very nice job
Could you have use your CerboGX / Touch to connect the external holding tank sensor? I used the CerboGX / Touch as my in tank sensor-monitor. And created a max and min alarm = push notification. Your part the reason I spend so much money on our boat 😅 Your the king of Oh glorious DIY. Thanks so very much!!!!
Just imagine all the room you’ll have in the technical compartment once you send that Panda to Davey Jones locker! 🤣
Adding a small block, starboard plastic or pvc is good, to each side of the seat towards the front and extending into the bowl will take the stress off the hinge. If you are still there in January, I’ll show you. We own s/v Capers near you.
I’ll take that idea!
As nearly always, excellent detail on the head situation. Gave me some good ideas on our head woes. Hopefully Ava will arrive in weeks, not months.
Wow, another fantastic episode, Mads! It's great to see you tackling the SCAD TM1 and Raritan Marine Elegance head. Your DIY skills never cease to amaze me! By the way, I'm glad to hear that you had a positive experience with Raritan's customer service. And that tip about adding the angled blocks to eliminate side-to-side movement on the seat is brilliant. Keep up the awesome work, Mads, and thank you for inspiring us with your sailing adventures and handy DIY projects. Your channel is a true gem! Oh, and I also appreciate the recommendation about the larger vent hose for the holding tank - it's definitely a clever solution to ensure zero chances of damage. Sail on! ⛵️
As always you are a champ Mads, i wish i had your knowledge. The locker was very tidy now
Nice choice in the Wera mini screwdriver! You'll love it. Their competitor, Wiha, makes the best feeling full size screwdrivers out there! They're a joy to use if you find yourself in the market for a full size set in the future.
You are the man I really enjoy your d y Work. Keep them coming Florida. People love your jobs. Thanks for taking the time to show us.
Thanks for teaching me about relays!
I love my Raritan Elegance! Three of us used it EXTENSIVELY on a six-week trip to the Bahamas. On that voyage and every time before and since it has worked flawlessly. It's a good thing, too, as getting to the various important bits in the back of it would be quite the pain. Now I just need to find a bidet adapter that will fit in the tight quarters that are the head's home.
As always, well done Mads😊
Soft close on a heads, now that's fancy !
We love our hand-pump non-automatic Raritan,PH-II head. I rebuilt it before we left Chicago in 2016 and haven't had it apart yet to do anything to it -not even replacing the joker valve in all that time. We are full-time cruisers who don't really stay in marinas so it was being used full-time that whole time with only a few weeks of breaks to visit family away from the boat.
Like you the only issue we have had is the toilet seat. It loosens up every once in a while and the paint is getting gross from some of the cleaning wipes we use. Those Clorox sanitizing wipes work great cleaning the seat and lid but the "Bemis" brand aftermarket lid just isn't up to surviving due to some cheap paint they use. We never had a.fancy Raritan seat with soft-closures. The head.had a nasty old Bemis seat that we replaced with another from Home Depot and sure enough after a half dozen years it failed again.
We do the same thing with the tank level by shining a light into it like you showed but we have long ago figured out exactly how long it takes to fill it with the two of us and that is pretty regular unless one of us is sick with the squirts and then it fills up much faster obviously.
We have two 1" septic vent hoses for cross-ventilation which terminate in simple mushroom through-hull fittings high up on the hull near the toe rail. When the tank is overfilled the "contents(tm)' have no problem escaping out of one or either of the vents. It's pretty embarrassing to have the "contents(tm)" of the tank dribbling down the side of the white hull with an ugly brown steak down into the water so we try very hard not to have any explosions even if it goes outside. Good boat neighbors don't let the "contents(tm)" of this tank go into the water. Nobody believes the excuse that this is the hot cocoa overflow vent.
Great video. As a RV'er I know the importance of monitoring the holding tanks by having working gauges. I really like the alarm system wired in. You always do such neat work! As a retired Union Electrician I have an eye for detail. You always autograf your work. Great job.
Whenever I do a job on or near the head (even at home) I put some cling film or some plastic or even cardboard over the bowl before I start. You really don’t want to be fishing around down there trying to find that nut or washer that you’re going to drop. (It’s bound to be stainless or plastic so you won’t be able to pick it up with a magnet. )
I've been using an electronic relay... mechanical relays don't like high current dc. We've also just updated our Jasco back to wall heads with heavy duty soft close plastic seats - expensive but so worth it when on certain tacks! Our black water tanks vent just above the water line and work as an overflow, useful as the main outlet can block! Fun stuff, but like the gauge, shame our tanks are stainless... Great video.
The toolcheck plus kit is a great value - I got turned on to the Wera stuff by AAC / Morgans Cloud.
I would recommend adding diode across coil, just to protect your output. Coil, when de-energized creates rather high voltage, which may be not safe for the output circuit of the sensor controller.
I was thinking the same thing..add a flyback diode. Or replace the power hungry relay (which may be engaged for some time) with a cheap mosfet like a 2n7000 or bs170.
Love the DYI segments Mads. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. I have to say, not sure how many times you said it but you should have called this the "Poop" video. LOL Thanks for sharing
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
We've had the SCAD TM1 for a few seasons now. I think I have one of the first units. It's easy to use and pretty accurate. I have one complaint, we sail on Lake Ontario and have to put the boat on the hard every winter. Every year it needs to be recalibrated in the spring 😢. Not rocket surgery but annoying. I've corresponded with company and their support person said what I was describing was virtually impossible to happen and yet it does every year. Love your videos.
We also broke the hinges on our head. I went down to the local hardware store and bought the cheapest ROUND seat [which is what the non-boating world calls the compact marine size] with a soft close seat. Everything fit perfectly. Cost $32. Could have gotten it for $12 without the soft close.
take a drink every time Mads says "poop explosion"... ;-)
Hi Mads. It’s funny because our boats are so similarly equipped, up to and now including the scad sensors lol.😂. Like you, I also have CZone and I have wired my scad sensors to the analogue inputs on my COI so I can see my holding tank levels on all of my MFD’s. You can also use that input to kick a relay to deactivate your toilet pump when it’s full, if the alarm function doesn’t work.
Great minds think alike? ;)
Hi,
Time to relax with a cup of tea.
EXCELLENT WEEK
Your boat is super cool
Hi great work and a Rock Star is a must .👍
I was surprised to see the holding tank so full. When ever I have hauled out I have always drained the tank, filled with fresh water & tank cleaner. If you don’t drain the tank you risk evaporation and the possibility of a more solid layer on the bottom of the tank
Have you considered using a silicon dielectric grease on your low voltage connections? No water to corrode could ever get in. Thanks for the great episode.
Love it. Nice vid again.
Soft close hinges break incredible easy.
Not to forget that a lot of relays have both open and closed connections
Nice video Superman.😁
As always you get it done.
When the flashlight came on I yelled 'ewww' at the screen! :> Great 'content' as always!
We now need a “no to poop exploration “ t-shirt
Oh, no metric measurements? Falling to the dark side, aye? It's good to see that the Imperial measurement system still works. You, Sir, are a talented man. My hat is off to you. Now, if we can get universal road signs. Keep up the good work!
As long as he doesn't have to interface with anything else, the kindergarden units work as well as say, e.g. "two fingers high rum in the glass".
SCNR. 😛
Another great video, thanks. But a little wonder, do you document everything well? Otherwise, it will be a nightmare for the next owner with all your clever connections. 💕😃😄
So, I thought it would be fun to play a drinking game and take a shot everytime Madz says "POOP EXPLOSION"....at the hospital now getting stomach pumped, hopefully my vision returns😅😂🤣🤪
The fact that you have Wera tools is not lost on me.
They are so nice! At least the few ones I have :)
No man glitter, but very interesting video with the doohickys 👍👍
That perfect shot of closing toilet tho...
Ahoy, Mads. We love what you do and hope you and Ava enjoy keeping us entertained. Did you find a way to get the tank level measurement from the SCAD TM1 onto the NMEA 2000 bus?
A head (toilet) with a brain?! That's a new one on this landlubber. BTW, that's my favorite shower valve and wand, as experienced on older cruise ships.
I guess head seat hinges on a boat get much higher stressed than those on a terra firma installation. Additionally the hinges are more likley to move out of alignment as they are independent of one another.
poop explosion ----- the new "thickened epoxy." 😂😂👍👍
👍
Liked
Do you have a diode over the coil in that relay ? If not I would suggest ading one otherwise you risk frying the output of your tank meter.
Oh there’s nothing like having your head down the toilet or in the holding tank on a Sunday afternoon …..! 😂
Hi Mads - love all the videos. Im considering installing the TM1 on the holding tank on our 2012 Hanse 400. Wondering how it's worked for you since installing? Havent heard of any more poop explosions in subsequent videos - so Im guessing it's working - but any feedback appreciated. Thanks in advance.. Dave
How relieved must Mads be not having to fit a sensor inside the tank. Up until he said it was an external sensor, I was waiting for the moment when Mads lost his lunch when he opened the storage tank
👍🏽
Athena is the real Love Boat ❤ it can endure poop explosions! 😂
“Poop explosion” appears to be your phrase of the day.
Lol! Every cruiser has a poop explosion story!
Boat good here. Is this really what cruise is?
Can I spend a lot of time sailing and less boat problems?
Nice!
Except those weird measures you used there! What was that? 😱😰
I don't like soldered wire on boats. I think crimps are better. The solder creates a hard spot and concentrates flex stress. Also, any residual flux can cause corrosion over time.
A more pressing point about the use of solder is that there is an “L” in the word. I have become used to the American pronunciation but has Mads been infected by Ava into inappropriate pronunciation?
@@michaelsummers8182 Haha! Since I am American I expect the 'L' to be silent.
Love ya' Mads but "poop explosion" is just too funny.
Isn't crimping connections and wires recommended over soldering in marine applications?
Job well done in the Head Room! Mads you need this product Dolphin Industries Home of SEP-TEK by adding to your Tank it will help break down Mr 💩 Last Notes. Mads since you and Eva looking for a New Sailboat remodel Project and maybe a Family. That is an Awesome 70’ Racing Sailboat for Sale and you could out run Hurricane season plus Room for guest and family. Plus it is in the States.
I enjoy Mads saying Poop Explosion. I think he enjoys saying it.
Is the plan still to head up the east coast?
Hi Mads. We had the proverbial poop explosion after our internal sensor stopped working! The SCAD TM1 is a strong candidate and your video is an excellent guide. Do you know if the TM1 output can be wired to a third-party display, such as our Phillipi? Or must we use the supplied display? Thanks!
Yikes! Poop explosions are never fun! What kind of display do you guys have from Phillipi? :)
New drinking game.. drink every time Mas says poop explosion
Mads = boatzilla. 100%!
You think your holding tank space is a mess? Really? Looked good to me.
How does the sensor compensate when the contents are sloshing around (not level) when under way?
Of course, there's the very small project of filling in that gap by the computer monitor where that vertical rail lives. If you don't fill that in, eventually somebody is going to drop an important coin down there.
Did I hear Prickly Bay mentioned in one of the recent videos? We’re flying down there in February, and we’re planning on hanging out for a few days before starting our sailing adventure. Do you feel it’s worth exploring the island a bit or would you just take the boat out immediately for some island hopping?
Does the SCAD sensor communicate with the Cerbo GX? Did you look at the Mopeka as well?
do you know aliexpress web shop got a lot of stuff like cables and fans as well as light😇
Drinking game, every time he says "poop explosion" take a shot... Good Luck.
Did you know that Murphy's Law has had an update, here in Ireland?
It's called O'Tool's Law and states that Murphy was an optimist... 😀
How's the $50 replacement part working on the FP genset ?
He can’t test it until the boat is back in the water
Glad you didn't get a Fischer Panda head, that story could have had a s***ty ending.
Why solder wires together instead of using but connectors? Don't you worry about vibration breaking solder?
Confused by the two wires (blue) from same contact going to both sides of flush "brain box". Or did it just look like a single spade connector?
I thought so too at first, but on closer inspection there are definitely two blue wires each on their own connector and relay terminal. Just wasn’t clear on the video at quick glance. Freeze frame at 15:49. 👍🏼
Ooohh so no more a oohh glorious poop explosion in one of the coming vlogs.😮 What a bummer Mads!!!😢 (haha tease tease😂🎉😊).
Maybe you covered this but why did yo not go with a composting head?
Maybe because they are rubbish at composting?
We have an Airhead in our 35ft sailboat and it works great. No need for all the headaches / smells of a marine head. @@normanboyes4983
Wheres the link to that video?
💖💖💖🇦🇺
Chunky stuff? Oh great, I can no longer make a PB&J sandwich using Chunky PB . Thanks Mads.
IDEA, LED PERMANENTLY ADHERED TO THE TOP OF THE HOLDING TANK, POWER ON PUSH BUTTON NEAR THE TOILET, CLEAR SIGHT GLASS IN THE SERVICE HATCH. PRESTO! PUSH BOTTON, LOOK 👀 THROUGH GLASS. 💩LEVEL.
Any feedback from Fisher Panda?
Nothing from any official source
👍👌♥️🇨🇦
Sorry to be 'that guy' but looks like you have another task to add on to your to-do list.. one of your cabin lights is out🙈
You seem to have the energy of the proverbial Energizer bunny, do you ever just sit and read a book?
...that's one of the yellow stickies on the "to do" side.
