Looking Back At The Paul Pierce Kevin Garnett Trade: NBA Trade Rewind
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 02. 2020
- Welcome back everybody, today's video is another episode of NBA trade rewind - with this one focusing on the infamous trade between the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets involving Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett... and eventually Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. This deal was orchestrated by then Nets GM Billy King in an effort to help the team compete for a championship... but ultimately it became one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history - as the Nets plans to chase a championship crumbled almost immediately - granting the Celtics multiple high draft picks to build for the future. Interestingly, this trade has an even larger impact on the NBA now than just Tatum and Brown however, as it also directly led to the Nets rebuild that ultimately helped them sign Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant in free agency this past offseason.

He finally started saying "I upload every single day" without saying "basically" . Im proud
that’s the type of character development i like to see
Or moving forward at some point early on the video.
@@emo_LeBron 😆👏🏿 bravo
Sporting Logically doesn't get enough credit for his consistency for putting up videos every day.
Abu Hassan frr
Danny Ainge stole Brooklyn's lunch money for the better part of a decade
Will Bowden More like gave away their allowance for the next five seasons with this trade.
As a Celtics fan, I was surprised at how good this ended up being for Brooklyn. Three/Four years ago, I thought this would be looked at as the most lopsided trade in history, but it isn't so bad now that Kyrie left and went to Brooklyn.
jayr revidizo yea no🤣🤣🤣🤣
If they didnt hire Sean Marks as the GM, probably they would still suck rn
It still is the worst trade in history but moves like the DLO trade, KD sign and trade, Kyrie free agency, Harden trade and other smaller smart moves made them elite again
It's a tragedy this man doesn't have 100k subs
he's close he'll be there by the end of 2020
I think it's funny that the Celts used the Nets pick to get Kyrie, where he was so unhappy that he went to the Nets lol. Brooklyn playing 4D chess
TheElectronicsMan100 yeah except they ended up with KYRIE who’s cancer lmaooo
@@Superfanofcolton You're saying this when he hasn't played with Durant yet lmfao
Chris Jericho right?? I’d comes to the team top 3 team in the east
TheElectronicsMan100: Danny ainge wasted this pick that turned out to be Collin Sexton. The Celtics, on hindsight, should never have traded for kyrie irving!
Yeah that 4D chess won them 42 games last year... Won't even be .500 this year. Lol
For the next Trade Rewind I'd like to propose the CP3 trade to the Los Angeles Clippers and how this deal affected both the Clippers and NO Pelicans (then known as the Hornets). PS: you can shoehorn the nixed CP3 trade to the Lakers as a bonus.
Great video. Love these trade rewinds! Thanks for all the hard work
Great breakdown !

NBA trade rewind is my favorite series on CZcams
Hey Tucker, do the Rondo-Deandre-Luka-KP butterfly-effect next...it's really trippy when you really think about it...
As a Celtics fan I’m glad we made 5his trade back then
If Brook Lopez didn't get injured in 2014, the Nets could've very well been a 50 win team. That would've made them the 3rd seed. They originally won in the first round, so I assume they still would've if Lopez was there. Then they would've played the Heat in round 2. The Nets originally swept the regular season series against Miami, and most of the games in the original 2014 Nets-Heat playoff series were close. I'm not saying they definitely would've beaten them in that series with Lopez, but I'd say they have a legit shot at it. For argument's sake, let's say they do. Then they play the Pacers in round 2, and that series could go either way. I think the Pacers would've been more likely to win that series, but let's say the Nets win and make the NBA Finals. Now I'm not gonna say they beat the Spurs and win the NBA championship, but if the 2014 Nets even made the Finals, they would've been looked at much differently than they are looked at now. The original 2014 Nets are considered a failure, but if Lopez had not been injured, they might not be.
This deal went for the worst deal in nba history to an ok deal for both teams.
It's still a objectively shit deal. It's just that Brooklyn managed to salvage the shitty hand they were dealt with.
J Once Billy King was replaced by Sean Marks.
Goes to show you what an impact acquiring a competent GM can do to team's entire culture.. They got from one of the worst situations in the NBA to contenders without a single lottery pick.
First comment, cant wait to watch this one. All ur vids are bangerz
Please do the Pau Gasol to Lakers trade
Urinatingtree does a really good video on the trade
@SportingLogical the Timberwolves got Budinger and Lior Eliyahu’s draft rights in a trade then this past off season traded his rights to Brooklyn for Graham and Napier. Graham was flipped with Teague for Crabbe and Napier was in the four team trade. So they still pieces from KG
Hindsight is 20/20 af on this one. Everyone thought the Nets would be a contender.
Great observation Gmac. If this trade worked out the way Brooklyn planned it would have been the heist of the decade. But this is how we learn to be better GM's by learning from the mistakes of others.
They would have been a contender... had Doc Rivers or a big leader like him been coaching. They hired a rookie coach to lead the veteran squad. Recipe for failure, even if said rookie coach was superstar Jason Kidd, great on court leader but no coaching track record.
Jason Kidd today, after several years of experience, he might be able to do the job.
How can anyone possibly say the Nets won this trade. I understand they arent in a bad position now with kyrie and Durant, but if they kept their picks, they would have had the chance to get jaylen brown, jayson tatum, and possibly others depending on how they would have performed. They would have still definelty earned free agency interest. The Nets are in a pretty good spot, but it would be even better if they had those picks.
You should do a trade rewind for Deron Williams
Tucker failed to mention he's a nets fan. That's why he's giving the nets a homer spin in this video.
He has said in other videos that he's a nets fan
In the trade for Caris LeVert they also received an Indiana second rounder that has yet to be conveyed.
I wish there was a way to do what if the Tyson Chandler trade went through for OKC. This would have meant that the thunder probably wouldn’t sign Perkins, and probably would have had enough money to offer Harden the max. But we could also do the Harden trade with OKC and Houston.
Slight mistake in your video Tucker, the 2017 pick was actually the pick swap. Due to the Ted Stepien rule, NBA teams cannot trade first round picks in consecutive years, but the Nets were able to throw in the 2017 1st round pick through the swap, despite already trading their 2016 and 2018 1st round picks.
Reading the title of the video: "Oh no, here we go again.."
Do the Brandon Jennings for Brandon Knight and khris middlton. Brandon Jennings got injured and was a shell of himself but coulda been a strong Pistons team, but the Bucks got a future all star in middlton. Then we traded Knight for MCW, which lead to MCW falling apart. Then Knight becoming a journey man. Plzzx
Brooklyn in better shape now than the Knick's after that trade wow
Collins Sexton and Jason Tatum and Jaylen brown all look like all stars
sexton does not look like an allstar lol
@@buddyfats4768 bro he averaged 20 PPR game this year bro
@@lebron9138 i aint calling him trash but he isnt playing on an allstar level
Great video, but can we stop this trend of “I’m not even going to try and pronounce this name” for all the work you put into this video it’s not that hard to learn how to say a name. I bet you don’t have a problem saying Antetokounmpo! Basketball is an international sport c’mon
Basketball Reference even gives how the name is pronounced :)
Not really a trade video persay, but a look at what the Lakers could have been if they kept all their young talent instead of trading them and going for big free agents would be fun. Russell wouldn't have been traded (and thus we wouldn't have Kuzma either), would have kept a 20-10 ish guy in Randle. Ingram and Ball and Hart would still be here. Thomas Bryant is a pretty prototype center in Washington. Wagner and Zubac still on the team. The #4 pick from this past draft, probably Hunter... We would have had Ball, Russell, and Hart at guard. Ingram, Hunter, Randall at forward. Bryant, Zubac, and Wagner at Center. Could probably include Nance and Clarkson as well even if they aren't really core pieces. But that's a lot of good talent the lakers have given up over the past few years
The trade iself in a vacuum was horrible for the Nets... but the reason they ended up getting decent value out of it and are a contender for the title in 2021 is because they cleaned house on management and started making very good decisions for the team that bailed them out of the mess that this trade was
They really gave up 4 1st round picks in basically 4 straight years 🤦🏿♂️. Wow. That is just mind boggling
This is arguably one of the worst most lopsided trades in NBA history. KG fell completely off the map once he was traded to Brooklyn. Seen her
Blessing in disguise trade for Brooklyn
Uhhh? They haven't done anything lol
EJOne they got new management because of the trade
Celtics probably would've been better off keeping Colin Sexton low-key
Aaaaand they did it again 🤦🏽
If they do not win the title this year they better not make this mistake again.
paul george vs victor oladipo and sabonis trade
Bogans was traded for Dwight Powell three randoms and two 2nds used on abdel Nader and Kadeem Allen. Powell would be traded with rondo to Dallas
Well I guess the trade won't be remembered if the nets win at least 2 championships with Durant,Irving, and Harden
Brooks would be dealt for Joel Anthony and three 2nds one being deyonta Davis later moved for the draft pick used on Thybulle later flipped for Carsten Edwards and ty Jerome later flipped with baynes for Milwaukee’s 2020 1st to clear cap space
You do realize Carmelo Anthony is not a good trade pick right
@@eddiew2325 wym??
once again, This is only because Kyrie is a nets fan & KD happens to be the most talented follower in history
Sean Marks deserves the Executive of the Year Award if Nets becomes a top seed next year
yessir yessir master tucker
If ur gonna throw kd in there than u have to throw in kemba for the Celtics who replaced kyrie
@Raphael Aronson KD was a signing tho and so was kemba
@Raphael Aronson bro dont act like the nets wouldn't have just signed KD outright cmon now. That's like saying the kemba "sign and trade" with the hornets was really a sign and trade everybody knows Kemba was signing there either way
Raphael Aronson I guess man but I still think the Celtics won the trade bcuz we don’t even know if the nets are truly gonna succeed. What if KD comes back and is no longer as prolific of a scorer as what he used to be? What if the chemistry doesn’t click and kyrie starts actin up? Those are some tough questions that the nets are gonna have to answer
Do the Kyrie trade
I think romeo langford will be a star when he gets a chance
Any WarZone news?
😂
You were Tatum all nba
This is a horrible deal for the Nets and you can’t convince me otherwise... Nets were the laughing stock of the league for YEARS and now all these years later they brought in 2 injury prone divas.... being a garbage franchise for half a decade isn’t worth a good FA signing lol
We did not pick Markel fultz we pick Tatum
um no you picked gordon hayward
Ve-zen-kov not that hard
Celtics never selected Markelle fultz.
But Fultz was the selection from what was the Nets pick
jasonfire34 I still would of thought that if fultz was in any other scenario, he would be a superstar today.
In other words here's what happened with this roller coaster of pick changes:
Philadelphia selected Fultz with the Brooklyn's pick
Boston selected Tatum with Sacramento's pick
Sacramento selected Fox with Philadelphia's pick
Lakers selected Kuzma with Boston's pick
The Sixers and Kings had pick swap option that was excercised. Boston (with Brooklyn's pick) won the lottery, but swaped picks with Philadelphia to get Sacramento's original pick.
ivaneurope the d’angelo russell trade was a disaster for the lakers. Russell is now a 2 time all star and the lakers got Lopez who isn’t with the team anymore
@@northernstar3486 The only reason why this trade happened was because the Lakers wanted to get rid of Timofey Mozgov's albatross contract. Both D'Lo and Mozgov are no longer with the Nets with Mozgov traded to the Hornets in 2018 (in exchange for Dwight Howard, who the Nets then waived) who shortly thereafter fliped him to the Orlando Magic, who waived him. The only asset that remained with either LA or Brooklyn is the 27th pick from the draft - Boston's pick with which the Lakers selected Kyle Kuzma.
Maybe this is a stretch, but if D'Lo remained a Laker, would the team be even able to sign LeBron James in the 2018 offseason? They'd have to move the bad contracts of Mozgov and Luol Deng in this case as fast.
Dude kg and Paul and terry were complete scrubs that’s why I don’t know why and no one can explain this trade. The former Celtics has zero chance of helping a championship team because you seen how Miami beat up on Boston no one was beating Miami and escpecially not 13’ Terry kg and pierce. Like if you watched basketball back then you knew they were washed
Danny Ainge > Billy King.
He robbed the Nets. The Russian owner really wanted results. They were not the results he wanted. Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, KG, Brook Lopez. One player is the only left in the nba.
James Harden to Houston
I think he already did that.
@@floijd I will search, but what I meant was to mostly review how OKC used their assets
Even though the Nets got Kyrie from the Celtics and KD, the Celtics were still the major winners out of this trade. The C’s got two young superstars in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum who will be a lethal wing duo for the next decade or so. KD’s coming back from and Achilles Tear, and he’s on the wrong side of 30 and he’s also really tall. Kyrie also has his shoulder injury and his chemistry with the team is the exact same as it was with the Celtics. It’s gonna take a year for KD and Kyrie to build chemistry, while other superteams in the NBA already have developed chemistry, and the Nets may not stand a chance against these teams
Atleast the owner is a russian mafia billionaire
He WAS the owner. He sold his shares to Canadian-Taiwanese businessman Joseph Tsai before the 2019-20 season
@@ivaneurope Why sell when they got Kyrie and KD?
@@J10005 most hype=most value
@@J10005 Prokhorov sold 49% of his shares to Tsai in 2017 (when the team was still reeling from the consequences) with the option to sell the remaining shares by 2021. I assume that Prokhorov was intending to sell the team gradually following the failiure of the Pierce/KG trade. When the Nets got KD and Kyrie, now was the perfect time for Prokhorov and Tsai to agree to the selling of Prokhorov's remaining shares while the hype is still fresh. Tsai also purchased the Barclays Center in a separate deal for 1 Billion $. The total price for which Tsai acquired principal ownership of the Nets combined exceeds even the 2 Billion $ price tag of the Los Angeles Clippers when Steve Ballmer purchased it from Donald Sterling's wife.
Nets still came out the winner In the end. I’ll take Durant over any player that the Celtics have. Fully healthy the nets will definitely be better than the Celtics for the next couple years and I see them having better championship aspirations.
are you sure about that? 2 aging stars against 2 up and coming stars? hahaha. you must be a deluded nets fanboy.
You must be running out of ideas
Dude what? This was a nice video
Mr Swanky Blum I know it was a nice video. I'm just saying that he must be running out of ideas lol
