  • ‘Home Improvement’ stars Tim Allen and Richard Karn are back in the shop on a quest for ‘More Power’! They spoke to ‘Extra’s’ Jenn Lahmers about their new series, which puts all kinds of tools to the test and showcases some of the most skilled makers around the country. Tim also gives his thoughts on the new animated movie ‘Lightyear,’ which stars Chris Evans as the voice of Buzz Lightyear, the character Tim famously voiced in the ‘Toy Story’ movies. ‘More Power’ premieres June 29 on the History Channel.

I'm growing to appreciate Tim Allen more and more--he is right when he says there is no Buzz Lightyear without Woody (Tom Hanks) because the formula isn't there. Disney doesn't realize you can't just come in and re-write a popular character without serious repercussions, in this case a movie that had potential but fizzled along the way.

I don’t think the movie would have done much better if Tim Allen voiced Buzz. Sure maybe some people out there decided to not watch the movie since Tim wasn’t in it, but definitely not enough for the movie to be profitable.
I think the things that hurt Lightyear the most are 1) People are going against Disney for their “woke” politics, 2) Pixar isn’t the sure fire hit studio it used to be and the fact that their last few films were streamed directly to Disney+ and now people are more just ready to wait for it to be in D+ and 3) it had much stiffer competition than Disney realized with the Jurassic World Dominance and new Topgun movies.
I mean I like Tim Allen as much as the next guy, but I don’t think he would be enough to save Lightyear.

  • @danpatterson8009

Allen's Lightyear was a toy that was not aware that it was a toy, and the process of learning that and developing relationships with other toys was the whole motivation for the character. Making "the film that inspired the toy" is a way to tack the Buzz Lightyear name onto an entirely different property.

Lightyear should have been inspired by old 50s pulps, like Dan Dare, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. Instead of that, they tried to ape Interstellar and failed miserably. The old "Star Command" cartoon wasn't perfect but it handled the concept WAY better than this thing. Also, SPOILER making Zurg and Buzz the same person because of time travel shenanigans is the WORST IDEA EVER. Zurg is supposed to be an alien evil emperor. In this movie he's not alien, he's not evil and he's not an emperor. He's not even a character, but an empty suit. So, in short: I'm heartbroken with how the movie turned out.

A lady nearby pointed at him and said loudly, "You're Tom Smith (not his real name) aren't you?" He turned red as a beet, and answered, "No, I'm NOT. I HATE that guy." At first the lady was a little stunned, and was about to say something else, but then realized it actually was him and she felt like a fool. People at other tables were looking at him, asking each other who he was. Well obviously they weren't watching public tv on Thursday nights at 8:30. I felt a little sorry for the lady because she shrank back and tried to disappear into her chair. The guy and his family left 2 minutes later. I've been re-watching Home Improvement seasons lately. I'm on season 7 right now. That show pretty much raised me as a kid. Weirdly enough, watching this show from the 90's touches on and makes a lot of really good points on todays issues still. Like, what it is to be a man/woman, women's rights, trans/identity topics.
I watched Buzz Lightyear with my kids. it was...meh...they tied the movie into the Toy Story universe with 2 sentences at the start of the movie...and that is about it, lol.

Everything good from the 90's was classic timeless entertainment.
We don't really see anything like that any more... it's all disposable now.

There is this guy called call me chato who made a video talking about buzz lightyear and he suggested something I found to be really profound: if they had included an opening of andy and his friends rushing a theater in the setting of 95 (when the first movie came out) and strove to remind people that the lightyear movie we are watching now IS the movie andy would have seen in the lore and timeline of the show
thought you would have enjoyed that fellow story buff

Well, Actors know they don’t own their characters. It’s the movie studios that do. I’m sure Tim was hurt when he wasn’t cast as the voice for Lightyear, but in hindsight, he dodged a bullet.

Who knows? Could have been a better film with him. They would inevitably have to shape the story to the actors they're using, it could have been a better story with Allen in the lead. He might own the character, but the fans do.

He's right, the movie doesn't have a connection to the toy because in the universe of all the movies "Lightyear" came before Toy Story. The toy was based on a 90s TV show Andy saw that was technically based on this movie. At least that's how it was explained by the director or producer of "Lightyear" which makes since as to why he looks different and is voiced by someone else. Lightyear Buzz is a real person, Toy Story Buzz is a toy.
