  • This is the first in a series of videos covering the first excursions pulled by newly-restored Milwaukee Road 261 in 1993. It covers the last part of the eastbound trip to Fond du Lac, WI on September 17. Sequences include servicing in Neenah yard, departing the yard, accelerating toward the Bell St. overpass s. of Neenah, crawling along Division Street in Oshkosh, crossing Pearl and Oregon in Oshkosh, crossing the Fox River bridge, crossing Oregon s. of Oshkosh, and racing through Van Dyne.

Very impressive to see footage of when Milwaukee Road engine 261 was first restored back to operation back in September 1993, the 261 is one of my favorite examples of Midwestern USA steam power operating in excursion service in the modern railroading era.

The whistle on the 261 is its original whistle from when she was in service for the Milwaukee Road. I wish Lionel did that whistle for their model of the 261 they released back in 2010.

Thanks for the vid, I grew up a few blocks from Neenah Yard. I have a couple photos of 261 heading South out of Neenah labeled "Fall 1993" on the back, however the photos I have were taken near sunset and have a Wisconsin Central loco in the consist behind 261, perhaps it made a couple trips. Now, if they'd restore #265 from the Illinois Railway Museum that'd be a nice doubleheader. =)

Yep. Original Milwaukee 3-chime. They switched it to the fireman's side in the late '90s and are currently using an AT&SF 6-chime on the engineer's side. From what I've heard the whistle valve would get stuck on the 3-chime, so it's rarely used.

Only downfall that 6 days after this was shot, Amtrak 312, 262, and 819 plus a baggage, a bi-level domotory, a super liner sleeper and diner were all but destroyed in Big Bayou Canot in Mobile Alabama. All scrapped after being burned by flames and corroded by saltwater.
