An electric multiple unit or EMU is a multiple-unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages using electricity as the main power supplier. An EMU requires no seperate locomotive to operate because electric traction motors are incorporated within one or a number of carriages. An EMU is usually formed of two or more semi permanently coupled carriages. Also it can be formed as a single unit railcar. The motive of EMUs in railways is mainly for passengers, but they are also used for carrying parcels & mails.
EMUs are popular on commuter and suburban rail networks around the World as well as around India due to their fast acceleration and pollution free operation.
In India, EMU rail networks are widely spread in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai & Hyderabad (by South Central Railways in India in collaboration with Telengana Government). Here the EMUs are mainly formed of 9 or 12 semi permanently coupled carriages. For a 9 coached EMU, electric traction motors are incorporated within 3 carriages and for a 12 coached EMU ,it is 4. The main railroad company of India making and manufacturing such coaches as well as the train are Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Tamilnadu. This railroad company has recently manufactured the speedy 3 phase Bombardier Medha EMU in AC and Non AC version presently in operation in Mumbai Suburban Railways & Kolkata Suburban Railways (only NON AC). Like ICFs, SIEMENS Ltd. also manufactures EMU trains known as Siemens EMU presently in operation in Mumbai and Kolkata.
But today we are interested in the EMUs in Kolkata Suburban Railways which was established in 15th August,1854. Different typed and different coloured EMU trains are in operation in this suburban network. This suburban network is divided in three divisions as well as Howrah Divison, Sealdah Division in Eastern Railways & Kharagpur Division in South Eastern Railways. This suburban rail network connects Kolkata via Howrah, Kolkata (Chitpur), Sealdah to many cities, towns & villages like Bandel, Barddhaman, Katwa, Tarakeswar, Arambagh, Belurmath, Kharagpur, Haldia, Midnapore, Amta, Krishnanagar, Gede, Ranaghat, Bongaon, Kalyani, Ballygunge, Canning, Namkhana etc. Also Circular Railway serves around the entire Kolkata. The rail network is connected through road, metro, airports etc. There are many lines in this suburban network which connects the two divisions like Bandel Naihati Line and Sealdah Dankuni line (connects Howrah & Sealdah Division). There is also a line which connects Sealdah, Main, North (connecting Sealdah to the cities in North) & Sealdah South (connecting Sealdah to the cities in South) and many more branch lines.
In this suburban network, the main terminal stations are Howrah, Bandel, Barddhaman, Katwa, Shrirampur, Seoraphuli, Dankuni in Howrah Division; Santragachi, Panskura, Kharagpur, Midnapore in Kharagpur Division; Naihati, Kalyani Simanta, Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, Bongaon, Barasat, Hasnabad, Barrackpore in Sealdah Main & North section; Ballygunge,Budge Budge,Canning,Lakshmikantapur, Namkhana, Diamond Harbour in Sealdah South section in Sealdah Division etc.
The junction stations are Howrah, Bandel, Barddhaman, Katwa, Dankuni, Seoraphuli in Howrah Division, Santragachi, Panskura, Kharagpur in Kharagpur Division, Naihati, Ranaghat, Shantipur, Krishnanagar, Bongaon, Barasat, Dumdum in Sealdah main & north section; Ballygunge, Baruipur, Sonarpur in Sealdah south section in Sealdah Division. The daily ridership is about 3.5 million (2017-18) and annual ridership is 1.2 billion spreading about 1322 kilometers and having 393 stations. ICF & SIEMENS (recently) manufacture the coaches. Bengal's Jessop & Co. in Dumdum also manufactures the coaches. BEML, BESCO, TEXMACO, TWL are the other railroad companies in India.
Today we will see many typed and many coloured trains made by ICF, BEML, Jessop, Jessop in collaboration with ICF, SIEMENS, BESCO, TEXMACO, TWL( Titagarh Wagons Ltd.).

EMU মানে Electric Multiple Unit। যেগুলোকে আপনারা লোকাল ট্রেন নামে চেনেন, সেগুলো এক একটা EMU। প্রতি চার বা পাঁচ কোচ মিলে একটা ইউনিট তৈরি হয়। আর যেহেতু অনেকগুলো ইউনিট মিলে একটা গোটা লোকাল ট্রেন, তাই তাকে Multiple Unit বলা হয় আর যেহেতু ইলেকট্রিকে চলে তাই Electric Multiple Unit।
ICF মানে Integral Coach Factory, Chennai যেখানে ট্রেনের কোচ তৈরি হয়।
ফ্রেইট লোকোমোটিভ আর মালগাড়ি নিয়ে অলরেডি একটা ভিডিও বানানো আছে। একটাতে তিনটে ফ্রেইট লোকোমোটিভ WAG 5, WAG 7, WAG9 নিয়ে বলেছি। আর একটাতে ভারতীয় রেলওয়েতে ব্যবহৃত BOXN, BCNA, BCNHL, BTPN, BOBYN, BOBRN, BLL ইত্যাদি ফ্রেইট কার ওয়াগন সম্বন্ধে বলেছি। আর প্যাসেঞ্জার ক্লাস লোকোমোটিভ নিয়ে অনেক মিক্সড ভিডিও আছে, দেখে নিতে পারেন। সম্প্রতি গত সোমবার WAP 7 কে একটা ভিডিও বানিয়েছিলাম। আর কালকে হাওড়া লোকোশেডের WAP 4 লোকোমোটিভের ফেসের বিভিন্ন ধরণ নিয়ে একটা ভিডিও আসছে। সেগুলোও দেখতে পারেন।
