Any telephoto lens that's Nikon compatible will work, if you're on a strict budget, Nikon's 70-300 doesn't seem like a bad option ($499). If your budget is a little higher, the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 is $1400. If possible for you, I would suggest the 200-500. Buy it used if you can find a good one, usually used lenses are much less of a risk than a used camera. I've gotten all of my lenses used.
What about the dynamic range of the D5...which was criticized??
