85 CR 500, first kick cold start, redneck style

  • This video is for all the whiners out there who need armour to start their bikes. Good technique and proper timing/jetting will prevail, no kickbacks ever. Normal procedure would use a couple of gentle `primer kicks`instead of the rocking back and forth in gear, but it`s intended to be a one kick deal. Long live big bore 2 strokers!

    That is a real nice looking bike,gotta love it. I just turned 62 and have been looking for a Honda XR (had a new 1974 XL 350 for a year then it was stolen). So with me getting a bit older I want to get an "enduro" (man is that word old) to ride around town (I live on the edge of the Mojave Desert). Way back in 1974 the best part of my day was riding that Honda back and forth to work, just loved quitting time.

      @danr5105 Před 7 lety

      Hello gamejr. In my search for a new (most likely my last) bike I am coming across many comments like yours. What I mean is, many others are saying these XL 350's handle very poorly, like a tank. I found it to be a bit ponderous also but I thought it was just me. I ask if it is simply that the bikes are overweight or is there some problem with frame geometry or frame stiffness? Most "official" sites that discuss the history of the XL line say the the 250 is overall much better. That sure is one nice looking CR 500 in the video. Perhaps you know which of these mid 70's to late 80's Hondas are most prefered. Are the dual carb bikes in any way prefered?

    See so many lame boys on here trying to kick the 500s, they all only move the leg instead of putting the whole body behind that foot, finally found this gem, a proper kick start on a 500

    • @jbsleddin
      @jbsleddin  Před 6 lety +3

      Matthew Rocha I have had a few of them over the years, had another 85 with a newer cylinder on it, they have the exhaust "scallops" which make starting much easier. I could start that one flat footed, but this 85 needs 100% commitment, pussy footing won't get you anywhere. Thanks for watching!

      That's the only only way to start those bikes dude. I had a YZ490 and start it the same, Lift your whole body high off the seat and stand high on the kickstart and slam down as hard as you can. My 490 was a pig to start. I'm 6ft 4 so no problem getting high on the kickstart. So many guys try starting them without even lifting their butt off the seat. Certainly gets other bikers watching you when your having a hard time getting a 490 started.

    Hell no, the 85 is not "too old", most will tell you it is the most brutal engine out there though, not a "beginners" bike by any standards. If you get anything that is pre-aluminum water pump housing, expect a nasty mess, but don't let it discourage you. They are all repairable.

    The kick back was never a problem, but the sudden stop at the bottom hitting peg was. The kicker was just a bit short. Used to eventually knock a hole in the bottom of my boots. It hurt really bad when the hole was there. I finally found the TT500 had a rubber pad that fit perfect over the kicker. That saved my boots. I used to tilt it over to prime. I will never forget my first ride on the 85 CR500. Oh! It was $1895 with a free helmet. Forks sucked.

    Just tilt it on its side till gas trickles out the carb overflow tube and you see it dripping on the ground and find tdc, then one kick and it will fire right up without finding gears and rocking it back and forth like your lost.

      I wouldn't recommend the rocking back and forth in gear for a four-stroke, although with any big bore high compression bike, initiating your kick from TDC is crucial.

    I wish I could say that Groutaone was riding a bike that I built. No, I still have it sitting in the garage.

    I'm the original owner of an 85 CR500. A bear to start from day one, but always starts. Once w/o boots is all it takes to know it's a bad idea. Bruised arch for a week. Just brought it out of 10 yr storage and found a bunch of antifreeze in the oil. Assume it is the water pump seal. Not apart yet to tell, but also some corrosion on the outside housing (like aluminum at the ocean) so maybe in the seal bore as well? Low hours on this bike. What's the repair if it's a "nasty mess" like you say? JB?

    Well you started it with one kick. But that was a whole lotta prep leading up too it. Rocking the bike back n forth works the best. My 87 looked exactly like yours with the back drum as well.
