"I don't see this job as a RISK!" | Graham Potter's first press conference as Chelsea manager

00:00 - Intro
00:17 - Philosophy at Chelsea compared to Brighton: You have to look at the size and ambition of the club. It’s a completely different challenge. I’m thankful to the owners for putting their trust in me.
01:29 - Potter’s UCL experience: My experiences in the UCL have been as a fan! This is an amazing evening for us, we’re super excited for it.
02:22 - A heck of an introduction: It’s a good time to be in the dugout. Wherever we start it’s a heck of an introduction.
03:21 - How do you want the fans to know you: It feels like nine months, not nine days! I’ve had some intense talks with the owners. My first impressions have been really good.
04:28 - Risks?: If we walk out onto the road outside it’s a risk. I left England at 30-years-old for an opportunity, and 17 years later I’m here. Life’s about going outside your comfort zone. I don’t see this as a risk.
05:46 - How have the players handled your arrival: they’ve been really positive around the training ground and I’m happy with the squad.
06:20 - Frustration of second game in charge being in October: I can’t control that. It’s above us. I only worry about the things I can control.
06:59 - His appointment being overshadowed: it’s one of those things where you’ll look back in 40 years and know where you were. I was the main news and then I wasn’t.
08:25 - Being the head coach and his overall role: Predominantly I’ve always been a head coach. I want to help the club. The club is the most important thing and we want to help them.
09:46 - The connection between the supporters and the team is the most important thing. I love their support and I’m thankful to have it.
11:03 - Injuries: Mendy and Kante are out. Apart from that we’ve got a fully fit squad. Mendy’s is his knee and is currently unavailable.
11:44 - Discussing the decision with the key people in his life: My children are 12 and seven so I didn’t bore them. My wife has been on this journey with me the whole way. It was a quick decision and very intense. This move felt right for me.
13:15 - Would you have taken the job under the previous owners?: I don’t like answering IF’s and it’s unfair to compare the previous regime to the current one. Our job is to create our own history.
13:57 - Expecting to come back to England?: when I left, I was working in the ninth tier and moved to the Swedish fourth tier.
15:25 - Dealing with the mixture of squad Chelsea have: It sounds strange but I approach every club with respect. It’s about understanding the individual.
16:49 - A philosophy change at Chelsea: I just see myself as a coach, not an English coach. I’ve educated myself and taken on steps to progress forward.
18:16 - What would success be this season: All my thoughts are on tomorrow night! There’s no guarantees, resources alone isn’t enough.

Looking forward to the Potter revolution Chelsea fans?
Potter REvolutution is Super Exciting 👍
@@samsungsaracen You know it
@@samsungsaracen NGL im scared. Chelsea changing their ways for a sustainable style and brand with their financial backing and plans to upgrade their stadium. If arsenal don't pattern up, Chelsea will leaves us for dust in the next 20 years, the gap will be like the spuds to arsenal now.
@@FatTodd i am not scared
Yes, seems like a nice open minded guy
Everybody thought he won't make it because he doesn't have any experience in the champions league and managing big clubs like Chelsea but he has a good head on his shoulders. I like the way he answered the question. Very humble guy. As a Chelsea fan, I really looking forward to seeing him every week. Keep the blue flag flying high.
Until boehly sacks him and then pays him 50 million
The hiring and firing thing will always be a thing at chelsea and it isnt too bad however i know to never fall in love with a chelsea manager like i did with tuchel
Ask them where did Pep start when he become Barca manager. He came from Barca team B and now Pep is the best manager in the world. Everyone did not believe in Pep when he was announced as a Barca manage that he will not handle the team because Barca is a big club and Pep doesn’t have the experience to coach Barca even in the UCL but he won UCL two times for Barca. Potter is a good manager who has proven his worth in Brighton and I believe he will do well in Chelsea. Let’s give him time and wait. I think the new owner will give him time and want to work with him for a long time. Todd did not sack Thomas because he started poor he sack TT because he want to start his own era with his own management and clear everything that was brought in by Abrahimovic.
"Everybody thought he won't make it because he doesn't have any experience in the champions league". Have i missed his first game? He still hasn't managed a single game with Chelsea. So nothing has changed yet!
When you say "chelsea fan", do you mean plastic glory hunting tv flavour of the month shallow follower?.
All the managers that had won something worthwhile started like this. Give this man a chance to perform
Exactly ..
ONYEUKWU CHUKWUMA well said - good support
Pep started at Barcelona
exactly, Frank didn't even have PL managing experience let alone CL, gotta back Potter!
@@benperkins9237 He started at their B team in the Spanish fourth division.
I really like him. He strikes me as being a well grounded guy. A guy who doesn't make decisions about players and there it lies, so much as puts them on a path to reach their best selves for the team *and* as people. If the players feel that, then even the ones that aren't starting right off will feel a part of a process and Potter will get the best out of them.
Maudal Musical Machines agreed
Yes he is very a good manager. However at Brighton there were times where he was a bit overreactive to fans. He needs to have thick skin to fans booing, which very few Brighton fans did.
But if He starts Mount, people will still complain, despite Mount being our player of the season for two seasons in a row.
If it doesn't work out with that owner, LMFAO, he can maybe coach the Harlem globetrotters
Football in Morden days is not like the way other managers try feel like they are the overall and undermining some players, in this Morden era it’s about psychological aspects of getting the players happy and to play with conviction knowing that each player has his own talent and none should be overlooked so Potter in my opinion has all what it take to be successful at Chelsea, coaches like Conte,Tuchel and Morinho can’t work with this new owners, Chelsea needed a cool and collected coach someone who is calm but well grounded, a coach who doesn’t necessarily becomes emotional on players and treat them like an outcast , am happy for Potter👍👍👍💪💪💪🙏🏽
GP is very philosophical, I can see him developing our young players and getting the best out of the more established players
Cuz of his formation
Good luck Graham Potter at Chelsea.
You deserve this opportunity for all your hard/great work in the past.

lmao wow, you're extremely positive but I can definitely confirm he is not doing that!
@@kaym7549 hiz a tactician bro ,hed definitely be watching us , ideally he wuldnt but its only natural that he would want to see if these players put in the same effort for a new coach as to what they have showed him in the last few games , also hed wana see the small tweaks that potter made and sit with his mate or assistant and literally picture his own tactics and crit how simple it was but how little foght the players showed , im sure id do thay or you not matter how upset u are about the sacking
English media are loving him... First english manager who could may be compete in the high level .. lets hope he will be up to this chalenge and the expectation
Exactly
English media and pundits are not backing him 100/100 not alone loving. It's hypocritical to say or think otherwise.
Of course he doesn't see it as a risk...it's an opportunity...he'll do Chelsea and the players well...the guy is super calm, sensible and very determined..

Man I’m so gassed, can’t wait to see the guys again after two years, never seen a Chelsea loss Live in person so let’s keep it up, winning and playing good football is the game. I am so happy Potter is in charge. He’s excited , the players are excited , the fans are excited. Let’s do this!!!
His enthusiasm is infectious, buzzing for tommorow night now
DarkPrince Gaming yes - he is easy to like
I remember commenting under Tuchel's first chelsea press conference and I said that "poor Tuchel has no idea what he's signing up for, it'll be soon before they come for his head" and then I fell in love with Tuchel and just for a second I thought the future might be different with him only for those dreams to be shattered last week. So all im going to say this time, Good luck Graham, welcome to the circus, enjoy it while it lasts geez!
I got the shock of my life seeing that Chelsea "parted company" with Tuchel.
Such a tactical mastermind, Potter however will get my support cuz he's never gotten horribly sacked, always improved teams and bigger clubs have always swooped in to have him.
He's had upwards trends all career long, and the teams he's coached have all had upward trends. I hope he proves doubters like me wrong.
I hope he recognises that Chelsea are Football villains. Anytime we lose, Football fans say "Football won this week". He should brace up!
Henry Odo great comment
I hear your statement but those “upward trends” wasn’t to the calibre of Chelsea.
He’s at the pinnacle of football now, no hiding place of having 1 win in 10 and call that success. He pitting his tactical nous with the best of the best and this “good manager” tag will be seen as the saying goes proof is in the pudding and my money is on him failing bcus in life experience counts far more than hype but let’s see. The schedule is favourable no Liverpool as the International breaks gives him more time.
BTW I’ve been Touchel fan either bcus he was far too defensive playing 8 players to defend 1 goal and having 3 player upfront that cannot score including mason whose a number 8 at best a 6 at worst yet Touchel played Mount in attack. We cannot have defenders being out point of attack and Touchel should have been gone a long while ago but this bloke isn’t the answer.
@@VMBSSS I hear you, and I support what you're saying to a degree, he is untested in the highest levels of football, having to coach a team through a competition he's not played in or ever coached in... I honestly would have loved for a club like Everton or Palace or LCFC or West Ham have him for a couple of years. Let him get a taste of regular European football for a couple of years, and even then, him coming to either Chelsea, Liverpool or City would still be considered a risk.
I understand your point. But now he's here. Those are his merits, he makes teams better, he takes teams from nothing to something and let's be honest, this Chelsea team, despite all the honours still look like disjointed team with no cohesion between attack and defence.
Potter created well oiled sides and if the ownership can tell the players, hey he is here to stay, back him and listen to him or you're out? Maybe it'll work. Maybe. But he'd still be learning on the job.
@@VMBSSS So yes, just does look like a lot of Cons, but (here's the but part.)
If Potter can get creative with how he gells these team of superstars together? It will make a whole lot of difference because imagine if he recreates a Brighton at Chelsea in terms of modern era attacking football, with superstars of the games. They can help him keep his job for a long time.
If, only if he is creative enough to be that piece of the puzzle that gels this side together because they are all really good players on their own.
We move on. Let's support GP....
Just from this interview i am really loving him
We loved him since day one.
Good luck Graham.. Just be yourself and always KTBFFH. May God be with you 🙏
Imagine you have been praying for a job at your dream company, and when it comes, people say it has come too early or it's a risk? No man. God Has answered his prayer
Does that mean that God didn't answer Tuchel's prayers or was Tuchel praying for the sack and the huge compensation payout that went with it?
Can't wait to see what he can do
This is like managerial Roy if the Rovers. Got to respect the man and how innovative and interesting he seems. So excited as a CFC fan.
Believe in u Coach ❤️❤️❤️☺️
The advantage of having a coach who is in his upward graph is that h will work extra hard to prove a point
For sure
You were really talking about me for sure while we don't know each other
Being appointed manager of a company with my young age started some people complaining about my experience but that gives me courage and power to work so hard to prove them I was so deserved the opportunity and my company wins more revenue than ever ❤️
I can tell you you're smart
@@tellthetruth2809 keep proving em wrong my g
Porter is good enough to get the best out of this quality chelsea side....you have our support Sir🔵🔵🔵
If Chelsea play with brightons style and with the players they have got . . . we are on to a winner no doubt about that ! ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
Arsenal fan and he deserves the chance to step up. Its about time English managers were given a chance. I just hope he gets the support from the owner.
Nope, he’s a Yes man puppet - just how they want it.
Joke of a club.
You'll be pleased when I tell you then, that Eddie Howe will be Arsenal's next manager.
The highest level that he has managed at so far has been Ostersands in the Europa League, currently 2nd from bottom in the 2nd tier of Swedish football. I wish him the best, although I am nervous that he is in so far over his head he simply doesn't realise it. Good luck mate.
GP seems to be an smooth operator, good luck and forward to see first few months.
I got to a point where watching chelsea matches was a risk to my heart under Tuchel. All the best to Graham Potter.
We got slapped so much
It was either heart attack moments or a game during which you could fall asleep with our sarriball-like football. This change was needed.
@@modestclyde2896 And we always had so much posession but would still lose, it was much worse against small teams
@@_Seru_ Sarriball was much worse🤣🤣 but I agree. Just hope GP does not flop.

I love the way he conducts himself and won’t blame anyone but himself during losses. He isnt selfish. My only concern is when it’s time to get fired up, i need him to get in the face of the 4th official and take no shit from anyone. Otherwise he is gonna be a memorable manager
Sounds like a genuine nice fella, I’m not to sure how he’ll cope here at Chelsea hopefully he does well, will always miss tt tbh

Emerald Sika thanks for starting a great debate
I've yet to see a manager get sacked by Chelsea & struggled for jobs afterwards. Getting sacked by Chelsea doesn't ruin your reputation in fact for coaches like Potter it boosts their reputation simply by getting hired. This all goes out the window if he loses his next 10 games though
Be positive...👁️
Exactly. The latter point applies to anyone in any job though, so if any manager pulls a Frank De Boer, they're going to get the boot - at Bristol City or Man City - doesn't matter.
AGED WELL POTTER!!!
I like this guy. Wish he was with us at Villa. Good luck Mr Potter
That would've been a better move for Potter, at this stage of his managerial career in my opinion. A big "sleeping giant" like Villa, Everton or even Leeds would've seemed the logical next step. Saying that, I expect Potter to do well at Chelsea.
Potter's fully earned his chance of managing a big club which sadly the same can't be said about cone layer at Arsenal
The fantastic experience we had with Galatasaray in the Europa League. 😌
what I like about him he is a very good attacking manager😇thats what we've been lacking
Are you sure about that? Chech Brightons goals scored and chances created over his time in charge. He’s more of a possession coach. Let’s hope the quality of players will improve his attack.
