Tesla Model Y - fitting two tone wheel covers on the 19" Gemini wheels (including my mistakes!)

- In this video I fit some replacement wheel covers on my 2024 Tesla Model Y RWD that has the 19" Gemini wheels. I wanted to continue with the style of the original Tesla Gemini wheel trims, so I chose some two tone in grey and black. They are also very similar in design to the original wheel trims on the new 2021+Model S. Aftermarket wheel covers offer better protection as they are larger and cover all the alloy wheel. Whereas the Tesla Gemini covers sit within the alloy rim and therefore your wheels can still be damaged by kerbing. Aftermarket wheel covers go over the alloy rim and therefore protect all the alloy wheel and are cheaper and easier to replace if you kerb your wheel. They also make the wheels look larger too.
I purchased these from www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...

One thing that had completely escaped me is that these wheel trims are similar in design to the original Tesla wheel trims on the new Model S.
Night and day imho looks much better :)
Thanks
Took mine off and added centre caps. Looks amazing with the original alloy to me. I hated the original 18 inch wheels on the model 3 and had a few covers but the Y had great alloys, love them
Great job. I've ordered some (different symmetrical turbine style black covers) from Ali Express. Thanks for the very helpful video.
Glad you found it useful.
I like them. Good call on the two-tone, as well.
Thanks.
I bought ones last year from same seller, I think Yukon, and I also paid similar money to you, but now replacing them again, obviously they saved my wheels a few times, but they are broken and cracked now. I noticed, like you, I had scratches on them, but also they came with minor scratches from factory.
Still, if they've saved your alloys, they've done the job....and made the car look better at the same time. A wheel refurb is going to cost about twice the price of a wheel trim, plus taken the car off the road, so they've done a good job.
Step back in time with wheel trims......nice.
old wheel trims where to just jazz up steel wheels to make them look like alloys. Now they make alloys look like steel wheels!
But of course they are there to improve the efficiency and they make quite a difference. In a video coming in a two weeks time, I'm testing that.
Still a backward step in motoring mate@@GoGreenAutos
I have similar from Greendrive and am very impressed with them. The originals are in the attic now for the day I say goodbye to the car as the next owner may prefer the originals. I have the grey midnight silver paint and they just complete the look imo.
Very interesting Matt, like the new wheel trims.
Back in the day I bought, for my clio, wheel trims for £15 or so to make the steelies look like alloys; and now we are covering the alloys up with trims for aero purposes :D How time's changed?!
What also has changed is you don't need cable ties to hold these things on!
No links in the comments that i can see. Thanks for the video.
There's 5 links to them in the video description!
@@GoGreenAutos Sorry, just can't see them on my Android phone.
@@connclissmann6514 I'm using Android too. All the text and links are there. You just have to keep pressing more to expand it all.
A definite improvement as you say. I purchased new wheel covers which look the same as the performance wheels from, EV Base who ship worldwide, however they were slightly more expensive. They went on a lot easier than what you seemed to experience and are a good quality cover. They also sell other styles like the original Gemini trim in darker grey.
I think the cold weather was hampering the fitment on this day.
They look really nice but if they scratch that easy it would drive me mad.
You most likely scratched them while putting the tape on, the paper on the bubble wrap bags is more abrasive than you might expect.
Yes, you're probably right.
They cost over 110$?
I worked in a tire shop. You need to give it a smack with a rubber mallet in the center
Yes I would have done, but it was very cold when I was doing this and I didn't want to break any cold, brittle plastic.
I’m sure on the instructions I’ve seen it says to remove the silver ring from the middle but not sure you did. Is that why they were stubborn to go in?
The metal ring is providing that force on the plastic lugs to make it grip the alloy hub. It would certainly be easier to fit if it was removed, but then its there for a purpose. I'm sure mine were difficult to fit because it was so cold.
I just needed to be more robust with them and give them a much harder smack, but I was being cautious because it was cold and the plastic wheel cover could split or break.
Yes could be right. Just going by the ones I’ve looked at and flicking through the pictures/instructions have said to remove the metal ring before installing. Not sure if it’s the same with your ones. Agree you’d think it would think it provides more stability to leave in.
Can you post the link to the center wheel caps that were gloss black with the silver T logo? I can't seem to locate those on the site as I don't want the matte grey ones that they ship with.
Thx!
The link no longer works. The product doesn't exist on AliExpress. There's something strange going on. It looks like all wheel products with the Tesla logo have been removed. There must be some copyright issue. They were loads of these before and now I can't find any.
They're on Amazon amzn.to/43FztO8
Also here amzn.to/3TV7I0p
Thx!.... That makes sense cuz when I was reading it said something about them getting in trouble so you had to private message them if you wanted the logos but thanks yeah I'll grab them off of Amazon 👍🏻
Does changing them affect your insurance. I've read conflicting things on this.
Many arm chair experts on this. You have to look at what the insurer's reasoning for "modifications". Its performance mods, mechanical changes (e.g. suspension), paint changes, vinyl wraps or mods that make it more attractive to thieves (alloy wheels were a good example of this, but not so now). So its mods that make it more difficult to repair (non-standard parts), higher chance of theft or break in, increasing the car's performance or paint/bodywork changes that make repairs more expensive.
So little things like swapping a wheel trim, that also isn't permanent, I'd say no, this doesn't count as a modification. But some would think otherwise.
@@GoGreenAutos I tend to agree but after speaking to my current insurer, Admiral, they said it would need to be declared and would affect price. Very odd
The metal ring is definitely supposed to be removed before fitting.
They look a lot better and make the wheels look larger.
Good upgrade.
Why is it fitted then? It serves no purpose during shipping.
@@GoGreenAutos I don’t know. I just looked it up on Ali express and there is a photo saying remove thing ring before fitting. I would send a pic but I can’t on here. Sorry.
@@GoGreenAutos maybe not actually I can’t find it anymore. Don’t worry.
@@michaelhutcheson5897 I've had a look at there's a photo showing the metal ring and saying the centre cover can be removed. This is the logo/badge but the photo is showing the metal ring. Maybe that's where the confusion is. I'm 100% sure the metal ring stays as this is what is pushing the centre grips out.
I liked the silver original ones better.
more traditional!
stock ones look like crap imo. I'm going with black with red trim given I have the darker grey exterior.
They look OK but I wouldn't be happy with the silver of the alloy wheel showing. Maybe it;s just my OCD.
You don't actually see it, unless you really look hard or stand at the right angle.
