We moved over 30 years ago from the Chicago area to Northwest Arkansas and I am very happy - especially in winter, that I do not live any longer in the Chicago area with its winter weather. We were lucky that we bought our home a the right time in Madison County.
Did you mention Arkansas has 6 species of venomous snakes and 2 species of venomous spiders? lol oh, glad you mentioned tornadoes but I think you diminished the potential threat a bit. I live in central Arkansas South of Little Rock going on 8 years (like you, I am from the PNW) but the other thing I observed is that the unofficial Arkansas state tree is a utility pole that is topped off with a tornado siren. I highly recommend people to acquire a NOAA NWS weather alert/all hazards radio that sits quietly like a smoke or CO monitor until...... great to have when a tornado is occurring during sleepy time. Nice video!

The level of honesty is admirable.
Much of the crime is in Little Rock as it has a lot of gang activity. I live in the sticks southwest of Fort Smith and there's not much crime down here. Most of the thieves know that everyone here has a gun.
One major plus is that unless you choose Bella Vista to live, HOAs are very scarce in Arkansas.
Not that I use it but it's very anti-marijuana here. The present governor and other officials are so obsessed by it that they are putting police along the Missouri line to bust people even though the jails here are very overcrowded. Missouri made pot legal last year.
Crime Bluff, I mean Pine Bluff is terrible too. Oh, West Memphis, AR is a drive through city too. Terrible crime rate.
@@user-kn3qq4he7u True on both accounts. Used to have to drive thru Pine Bluff until the bypass was built. What a relief not having to go thru there anymore. When I drove trucks I seldom ever stayed overnight in West Memphis.

Definitely have reactionary politics, religious fanatics, and the occasional chicken house odor wafting through on the list. Of course, if you are a reactionary religious fanatic who loves the smell of chicken house in the morning, none of that will bother you.
Unless it has changed quite recently, the U of A bus system is misrepresented a bit here. There is no bus pass, and anyone can use it for free. The main drawback is that it's limited to Fayetteville and only really only goes places students are interested in going.
As someone who used to work with county appraisers and tax collectors, I'll say the property tax information here isn't great. Estimate the annual bill by using 1% of the sale price, and you'll be pretty close for buying a new property. The actual calculation involves an appraised value (redone for all properties in the county on a three year cycle, which is likely what is meant here by "reassessed every three years"), an assessed value, which is the value of the appraisal that is realized after certain caps are considered and changes annually, and the millage amount. The tax bill is the millage multiplied by 20% of the assessed value. Caps are reset when the property is transferred, so don't depend on the previous taxpayer's tax bill as an estimate.
If you want to understand the tornado potential, consider the Joplin tornado. There's no reason that tornado couldn't have happened anywhere in Northwest Arkansas, though it's obviously a rare event.
There were these two fellars standin' on a bridge, a-goin' to the bathroom. One fellar said, "The water's cold" and the other fellar said, "The water's deep". I believe one fella come from Arkansas. Get it?
