    My grandmother’s (mormor’s) family in the USA is from Växjö, and she said it is pronounced vekwa (vequa). In northern Sweden, they say it differently (~veksha).
    As someone else commented, gatan means street. Up to the 1800s, rural roads had gates to help contain livestock. I think gatan may have originally meant gate. Swedish, English and German are all Germanic languages, so gatan~gate~Gatter.

    Dazzle is a mobile bronze sculpture inspired by The Legend of dazzle. The legend tells of a brave woman who, together with other rural women of Småland, defended the village when it was invaded by Danes. The story gave women in Värend equal inheritance rights with men, an important aspect of gender equality. The sculpture of dazzle is thus a symbol of women's right to take their place. In the design of dazzle there are both attributes found in the traditional host costume but also details that can be identified as those of the superhero. The sculpture has not yet been placed in a permanent place, but has been moved around Växjö's public spaces. The sculpture has appeared in places where issues of gender equality can be interesting to discuss... from a translation of BLÄNDA SKULPTUR webpage

    Very nice video. I have been once in Växjö in 1990s (I'm from Finland) and don't remember it very well. This summer I drove quite near by it, but didn't drive into the town.
    BTW, "gatan" is literally "the street" in Swedish, so "Vikingagatan" is "The Viking street".

      @@TheWonderingEnglishman It's mandatory for us to study Swedish at school because it's the second official language in Finland. Sometimes it has helped me eg. when travelling in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. I understand at least the signs :)

      Despite Britain's history being shaped by Scandinavia. There was no Swedish language option at School. It would have been far more useful than Latin.

      @@TheWonderingEnglishman in my schooldays we began to study English from the 3rd grade and Swedish from the 7th. I think today those begin earlier. And they who speak Swedish as their first language, study Finnish, except in Åland islands.

      @@TheWonderingEnglishman Sweden is obviously not a socialist country and was not that before either. They have been a capitalist country with free market for ages and having had social democrats in charge does not negate that. Saying that Sweden didn't suffer from the pandemic as much because they didn't lock down is false, their per capita death rates are for example about 3 times higher than in Norway and also much higher than in their other neighbors Finland and Denmark that locked down. Their currency lost value at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 but recovered since. Although it floats somewhat freely, the central bank tries to keep it somewhat stable against the Euro and it has been trading against it at a rate between roughly 9 to 11 for a long time so it's also incorrect to say their currency showed some strenght or benefit compared to the Euro in the recent years.

    As a Swede i can say that our new gouvernment is about to fix alot of the migrant problem and as you say we have Denmark as a model and i am pretty sure that we will deport the ones that came here to do crimes and live on wellfare, and i hope it will work out cause this is our home.

    I updated my Skyscanner app to look into future destinations. A swimmer at my pool, Artom, was involved in developing the App. It was initially developed to choose destination by weather preference. Are you near their London office? Artom visits us in San Francisco a few times a year. I just returned from Slovakia‘s 🇸🇰 Tatras and look forward to getting back there. It’s way more comfortable, well mannered and affordable than Sierras here in Northern California.

    Why were you living in Norway before? ,,, also got a question, like your sky scanner idea of bouncing from place to place, but how do you arrange accommodation at short notice like that?

    • @TheWonderingEnglishman
      @TheWonderingEnglishman  Před rokem +1

      I was with a lovely Norwegian girl for 5 years - she lived in Oslo. I point out where I used to live in my Oslo video. Sadly it didn’t work out so had to get back to the drawing board. Accommodation is generally very easy to arrange last minute. The only time it’s not is when there’s a big festival or national holiday. Independence Day in Ukraine was impossible to find a place to stay when I rocked up in Kyiv last minute several years ago. However, usually last minute via any of the booking sites usually gets you good deals. Property algorithms bring prices down the closer you are todays date. This is true for Airbnb and hotel accommodation. Although if I know I’m going somewhere - I try to track prices and leap on deals when they pop up. I have alerts set for flights and make hotel bookings when I get discount deals sent via email. And sometimes I just wing it :)
