  • When I returned a year later ,the GG 1's were gone. Only four E 8's and a couple of E 60's of the original group remained.Only five RS 3's were seen here in New Haven,Ct. on August 31,1981. The New Electrics were still being used as trailing units until being qualified and hadn't even got their first coat of dirt..

Also, to think that 40 years ago we had old GG1 electric locomotives pulling new Amfleet cars, and now we have newer ACS-64 electric locomotives pulling old Amfleet cars! (Though to be fair, the Amfleet cars have been refurbished several times, so on the inside they look much newer than they really are.)

ApatheticCareBear i wonder if Amtrak planned on having LRC’s instead of amfleets and that’s why they painted the AEM-7’s with similar looks to the LRC’s

The E8 you see in the Phase 3 paint scheme is #499, the only unit to be painted so. She was retired in early 1983 along with sisters 496 and 498. The 495 and 497 continued to operate through 1983.

I had a cab ride to NY and back with a friend and his Father in the late 80's in an AEM-7 at 110mph. It was great and interrupted only by the ac/dc change when the breakers trip and had to be reset.

The "Vomit Comets", the 4400's had to go when the NH Line was converted to 60 hz...they were not able to operate on that power...I rode on the last run of the Washboard MU's.....They were quite beat up by that time....

I still often see AEM-7s at South Station in Boston, but in the "Phase V" colors. Once in a while I'll see one of their shiny new ACS-64 electric locomotives. And this is their non-Acela trains (as I usually see a LOT of Acela Express trains there.)
The MBTA still uses F40PH locomotives, but the only Amtrak diesels I see in Boston nowadays are the Genesis series.

Amtrak RS-3 114 is ex Pennsy 8604. After serving several years as ConRail 4020 and 4021, E-8's 498 and 499 eventually became the property of Bennett Levin, yeah, THOSE E-8's! The 496 was cut up in North Haven in 1985 or 86. The RDC-2 looks like the 30, origionally NP B-30, the only RDC that kept it's origional number.

@AJBMP43 oh cool..i didn't recognize it because it looks just like the amfleets tht distance.i've never seen the bolted on patches were the restrooms are...maybe i did and never noticed them..i see the metroliner cab cars everyday since i live next to the harrisburg line..the only patches i see are were the traction motors vents use to be and roof patches..but i have seen one metroliner car completely turned into a coach and it look like the one at 6:50..they even plated over old windows on it

4400's, the so called "Vomit Comets" due to the bouncing around when running. Long gone, could not operate on 60 HZ and did not have ATC....Too bad, they were very interesting units.....

The three E8's shown here are a group of five that were rebuilt in 1975 with HEP so they could run with the Amfleet cars. But the AEM-7's could not operate without the E8's yet? Was this shot with video or 16mm?

Great "vintage" stuff erie, thanks for posting. If you have any more, feel free to post.Haha. Do you work for the railroad? I guess it was alot easier to gain access onto railroad property then, compared to today with homeland hysteria that we have today.

AMTRAK had some ugly colors.. The RS3 ruined in PC livery. at least the caboose was still in NH livery. Nice old video. I remember when you could just go down in that yard. No gates, no security. I use to go sown & take pics all the time. Had my nephew climbing on the locos. LOL No one came around. Over the years did a lot of hauling const. material in there,

New Haven before it became a sterile yuppie station, when it was still a real railroad!!
