You can achieve much the same effect on a ruger 10/22 and have a nice small project for you and your son to work on together. Teach him a lot about the mechanics and build some pride in his very own "custom" rifle that he knows how to take apart and reassemble

The M1 Carbine was made in such huge numbers not to replace the M1 Garand, but to replace the Colt M1911 pistol in .45ACP. It was first issued to troops whose primary job was not front-line combat, truck drivers, artillerymen, radiomen, hospitals, HQ administration. It was to give them more firepower than the issued pistol in case they were overrun by airborne troops or blitz tactics.

@@BonesTheCat I've put around 100 rounds so far and it went great. Had some hiccups with the first 2 magazines I fired through but the gun was brand new and tight, as well as the magazines. It had around 5 failure to feeds as the mags were really tight but they're starting to loosen up and I haven't had any issues in the last 60ish rounds. As for hunting, I use a 10/22 with a scope but I definitely plan on using my M1-22 for some squirrels this year. It's lighter than my 10/22 (even with the Ruger having a synthetic stock and a scope), hits pretty consistently, and is pretty nostalgic. I did have issues trying to put an original GI stock on the rifle, as others have stated before, but I made it work. The polymer front sling swivel will definitely come off for a metal GI unit. For 420 clams, I'm definitely happy with it. It's 1:1 with a true M1 carbine and plinks really well.
For hunting, you'd be fine with either option. The 10/22 would be the better choice if you plan on modifying it but if you just want a fun WW2 lookalike with decent enough accuracy, I'd pick the M1. Let me know how it goes!

@@jrod.c5 Reporting back. Went looking and found a 1965 - 1978 (can't quite date it accurately) Marlin 989 M2 (magazine fed 989 as opposed to tube fed of their M1 style range) that looks like it came from an old boy's cupboard his estate were selling off. He even had an original Weaver T-10 scope attached and original leather sling. Really stoked with the find and snapped it up. $250 which is a real bargain. I don't think the family quite knew what they had, or didn't care. Great condition.
