- From the dark stories and mystery of figures like Nattramn and his project Silencer, deep cuts like Thy Light or Lifelover, more popular solo projects like Leviathan and Xasthur and the American DSBM scene, follow me on a journey through some of the history and tell-tale signs that can lead you into the genre known as DSBM!
Such an intriguing and powerful genre that can be as disorienting to unprepared listeners as it can be live-saving to those who hear it when they need to. Diving into this genre was a blast.
It's a hard-hitting, dark subgenre of black metal that is not for the faint of heart. Make sure to take care of yourselves if anything ever gets too hard to handle. You'll make it out of this. I care about you.

DSBM is something you not discover by searching for sub genres of metal, but by your own taste for something darker and eventually pop into a few bands. Frankly, it's a really defendable music in my opinion. Such darkness needs to exist in music because it exist in ourselves. And it's not a good thing if that darkness stays inside for too long. Music is a valve that you can let every kind of emotion out. And self harm and clinic depression is really something you don't want to erupt inside. But of course this stuff is not for everyone, and for someone who is using this to systematically getting worse and worse by listening dark stuff, well...that will not end well. Again, this is a cultural tool that can help you, and bury you, literally, so be careful.
i really like DSBM
and to me it has an opposite effect. in fact it makes me feel better. people around me would never think that i listen to music like this.
as a teenager i felt very alien in the person i am. so dsbm makes me feel like there are more people out there are just like me or even worse.
i feel more connected to that than any other pop music out there.
@@Poemwriter_Angelo yup, this is how I think DSBM should be listened. Glad tgat you are ok!
Very well said, my man. Very well said.
I discovered it by youtube recommending Decalius to me. The algorithm is trying to tell me something
really well said. i just discovered dsbm through the youtube algorythm, weirdly after listening to dying fetus, but not during my screamo and grindcore music adventures earlier this year. im actually really glad i didnt find dsbm when i was actually a depressed suidical teen. now i can listen to it and it feels very comforting to listen to because it helps me feel less alone for having that really dark part of myself and having gone through such dark times in my life. now that ive overcome that part of myself it feels good to listen to dsbm as away to acknowledge mental suffering rather than pretend its not something within me.
speaking as a severely depressed person, dsbm is definitely my favorite subgenre of black metal. I can't say I'm really sensitive to this kind of music (since I feel all this shit myself without any external influence lol), so it just comforts me just by letting me know that I'm not alone in those struggles. my favorites are xasthur, thy light, anti, none, coldworld and advent sorrow
I FUCKING LOVE XASTHUR AND ADVENT SORROWSSS
You should listen to im a coffin
None is so good
I love Shining, Silencer, early Forgotten Tomb and a band that a lot of people even in black metal circle know about called Born of Abomination ( if you haven't heard them the first track I'd rec is Showered By Razors )
I'm vocalist and lyricist in DSBM since 2013 DSBM is my negative shit catharsis. It calms me. Because i got bipolar disorder. Very interesting video, man. Good job.
Psychonaut 4 & Lifelover are probably my favourite dsbm bands
Lifelover is amazing, I just discovered them before
@@Hastenforthedawm dekadens over pulver imo
try beyond melancholy, thats my favourite
@@geenmemeisillegaal will do!!
I discovered psychonaut 4 this yr I love them
I've listened to some DSBM bands and I like sound of some of them. Psychonaut 4, Lifelover, Heretoir. Very good stuff.
Also in 5:30 you misspelled DSBM with NSBM. That's a huge difference.
Ahhh, haha thank you for letting me know. Just a mistake. I tend to have an issue where I'll reverse things in my head/speech so thank you very much.
i have more in common with DSBM than any mainstream genre's like pop, rap etc..
listening to DSBM just makes me happy to know that there are more people out there who feel strange and alien sometimes just like me.
and it makes me feel more human and connected.
i recently got into dsbm because of my friend, i listen to anguished, psychonauts 4 and kalmankantaja. i really like it
I'm a lifelong depressive and music like this genuinely makes me feel better about myself. It doesn't make me suicidal, because I already was anyway. I'd rather listen to some soul sucking black metal than some plastic mainstream garbage without a shred of sincerity to it.
What troubles you bro?, what makes you depressed?
So am I, still waiting, to stop this masturbating
Very well put
@@HxRaider my K/D on Counterstrike 2 makes me depressed 😫
the reason i got into dsbm was wanting something more, listening to black metal and wanting something more extreme, more thematic and when i heard advent sorrow i knew dsbm was a genre that could give me what i wanted
Sterbend,Nyktalgia,Sombres Forêts,Silencer,Thy Light,Inferi(swe),Coldworld,Beatrik,Brocken Moon,Anti,Arvet,Be Persecuted.....pure beauty of DSBM music.
I just love Nocturnal depression, been listening to it while working for months now :D
I liked Nocturnal Depression a lot too, they were mainly my favorite dsbm band. I'm considering my own opinion on the situation, but they quickly didn't fell off my list of favorite dsbm bands when I found out they were planning on playing at a nazi music festival that was shut down before it was able to happen in either France or Germany. You can have your own opinions, but I don't really like that they did that. I understand separating the art from the artist but when it comes to nazism, that's a bit hard for me to do
Tbh dsbm feels like a niiice warm light, especially nowadays when my depression is getting worse. One of the things with my depression is continuously feeling unreal, distant, and numb. Bands like Sorry… and Lifelover and their gutteral screams brings me back into reality and weirdly helps me feel these depressive feelings
DSBM isn’t one of my favorite black metal subgenres and I have to be in the right mood to listen to it, but sometimes the melancholic atmosphere can be beautiful at times much like funeral doom. Some of my favorite DSBM bands are Abyssic Hate, Thy Light, TotalSelfHatred, Shining, Forgotten Tomb, Leviathan, and Xasthur.
Suicidal emotions by abyssic hate is really good, and I’m not even a big dsbm guy
Austere is a band ive come to love just recently. if i’m feeling particularly down, its a good thing to put on and just embrace it rather than trying to escape. weirdly, it really helps when im at my worst. I survived a suicide attempt that left me in a coma for nearly a month and id rather not get back near to how i was then. i dont get how or why but hearing that raw pain and anguish feels like its releasing pressure from my whole existence.
I like the pokemon Platinum music in the background
Saaaame 😂
I like my DSBM more closer to atmo-black and mixed with other genres like Lifelover, Hypothermia, Kall and Intig. Even if Lifelover sounds more like a more depressive Kent or depressive indie rock, I still enjoy them from time to time.
I really like DSBM, and a really good DSBM musician is Tishina. It really helped me through a hard time, listening to people scream about how I was feeling and making me feel heard and understood rather than angry or pitied. The music is so soothing, but the lyrics are disturbing. It’s comforting when you’re in a specific mindset. I don’t agree with how some of the community normalized SH though, that’s something that shouldn’t be okay to do like a lot of DSBM listeners seem to think.
My first DSBM experience was with Shining's Halmstad and it's become one of my favourite albums of all time
@nukestormgg Yeah guess it kinda does 😂
For people looking for recomendations. I have been deep into dsbm for years. Psychonaut 4 is a major raw dsbm sound. as the creator mentioned Xasthur, if you'red looking for more emotional dsbm, Apati is for you, or melancholic overdose or veil. advent sorrow has more BM like classical style but dives into DSBM as if it were second nature, these are atlest the primary bands I listen to while cutting myself open.
I think it's good that a music genre exists that let's you express negative emotions or Depression.
It's like a space where people are that you can relate to. 🧐🤷🏻♂️
And tbh I can understand that there are lots of depressed people in america...bc living there is not really as good as everyone thinks.
Just discovered Trist and Kanashimi, probably my personal favorites if I am being honest.
Great taste! I've been into the stuff for years now and trist is still the absolute number 1 for me
@@erdyerdnussstheir music sticks like no other
my favourite bands from DSBM is definitely Decalius and Psychonaut4, both of which are very well known, but the best thing about this genre is there's bands or projects that havent been discovered yet or that arent very popular, which makes it more personal than it already is.
Whenever I feel extra depressed, lonely and useless I put on some DSBM, and strangely it works. After a while I feel like I shouldn't complain and that my life isn't as bad as I think.
Suizid-I left this life to rot is always the one I start with, the drop in that song is fantastic.
Anyways I'm not a total black metal freak at all so this channel gave some good insights. Thanks!
Forgotten Tomb and Psychonaut 4 are my favs
Dsbm is beatiful genre. You cannot experience the same feelings from any other music. I am a young man who beated depression, Dsbm is just a reletable beatiful memory
I'm gonna need some more DSBM content my guy. Emo music stopped helping so I found DSBM where people screaming in agony really just did it for me apparently.
The insane thing about DSMB is the depth. You explain it so well. From the melody of Thy Light to the Darkness of Sterbend, what a crazy but amazing genre!
Thank you for an excellent rough guide. I personally suffer with depression and guess should be in a 'trigger warning avoid this' category however, at least for me, this music is not a trigger to act but more a comfort in that when I listen and play along I find a kind of solace in knowing others experience similar 'feelings', I don't feel as isolated and alone. Also the minimal structure makes playing along and improvising around a central theme easy so is effect you can become part of the band. You don't need physical band members when you have Xasthur to play with, once you've found the riff or a riff that fits or even one that doesn't, you're locked in for the whole song.
DSBM music for me affects me at the core level that other types of metal such as doom metal or hardcore can't even approach. DSBM resonates with me at an innate level that I can't put into words. If I hadn't discovered this genre, I honestly feel I would be here now. DSBM offered me something I didn't realize I needed to hear until I heard it. I have literally dozens of DSBM albums added to my playlist. For me, I get the most benefit if I listen to the entire album in one sitting because a certain theme evokes in me that's a compilation of all the songs combined. My favorite albums are from Nocturnal Depression, Happy Days, and Decalius.
Gotta throw in the usual recommendations; trist, hypothermia, life is pain, helvetespine, ruttokosmos, abyssic hate
I love DSBM. No other music captures the feeling of depression ( at least the way I experience it ) more vividly. I think I read an interview with someone in that genre. Can't remember what band. But they said something to the effect of "I'm glad my music speaks to people who suffer from depression. But hopefully they'll make it to a point where they don't need my music anymore"
I have clinical depression myself and tbh dsbm just makes me feel less lonely, not only it sounds good (at least to me, I'm a metalhead) but also it comforts me somehow, not to stay sewersidal but to let it all out til I feel better. My favs are decalius, lifelover, psychonaut 4. Black Metal in general really makes me feel good. It's cathartic...
I was laughing my ass off watching this video stoned asf. Thank you!
Some dsbm is actually soothing to me.
Finally a music genre that fits my mental state
I’d like like to recommend ”Suicidal Emotions” by Abyssic Hate. Really good dsbm
Exiled from light is just black metal perfection, it's one of the few bands that doesnt need to be fast and aggressive but still isnt boring
DSBM is probably one of my favorite black metal subgenres with black thrash and raw black metal. i love Happy Days, Make a Change... kys, and Lifelover outside of the biggest bands
Ayy! While researching this video, coming across and listening to Lifelover really made me happy. Wasn't familiar with that project prior and came away with some great new music to listen to! I also recommend Thy Light if you like Lifelover!
@@TheMetalTempestYT Thy Light is great. Morphine is a raw DSBM band that almost borders on war metal that's made by a trans woman.
@@xtransxcorex whoa, really! I’m gonna have to check that out.
The prime example of the pain shriek in NY opinion is silencer
Haha, absolutely! Had to highlight 'em as it's a very surface level example that gets the point across perfectly!
@@TheMetalTempestYT also they are the only band I've tried within the dsbm sub genre, thus the reason I don't really get into it
@@Cazador728 That's fair. I will say there are a lot more bands that aren't as 'gimmicky', I suppose? Silencer blew up in the underground/mainstream metal scene because it seemed goofy and absurd to people unexposed to it. If you venture into some more bands, you'll start to hear more stuff influenced by dark ambient/atmospheric black metal, and it can become very beautiful and more fun to listen to. I remember the first time I heard Silencer when I was younger sitting and being like what the actual fuck am I listening to LMAO
This is my favorite music to listen to when I sleep.
*Happy Days
*Xasthur
*Forgotten Woods
*Drowning the Light
I am an acoustic blues player with very dark nihilistic and misanthropic themes.
DSBC/Blackened Gothic Folk/Blues
i listen to dsbm here and there. and lowk it makes me worried about myself. i cannot put into words how or why i enjoy it. how i found it. anything. but its one of my favorites to listen to whenever im sad. in a way its calming and in a way it’s the complete opposite. but i can’t talk to many people bout it because some people either dont know it, dont like it, etc. so its something i keep to myself. but i’ll always say i love it. no matter what. and i can only ever listen to the kind that’s more heavy. not sure why
This channel rules lol time to binge all these videos :P metal is the law, music is the life
Just heard Dacalius for the first time today and honestly I’ve never heard music before that so perfectly encapsulates the feeling I had going through some of the darkest times in my life. That internal feeling I can’t even put into words. I’m going to look more into this whole genre but when it comes to listening to it, it’ll have to be a rare occasion. As much as part of me wants to only listen to this from now on I know I’ll probably end up in a hospital or worse if I do that lol. Enjoy the music and art but take care of yourselves guys.
yo literally same. youtube algorythm recommended decalius to me yesterday and i feel exactly the same as you. i think its really important to acknowledge that very dark part of ourselves, but not all the time, its good to mostly live in a happy space and focus on the positive parts of life. im so glad youre here.
I’m ngl, I’ve never really liked dsbm or black metal too much. Now with that being said, I am a metal head at heart. Of course I struggle with my own bouts of depression, but recently I’ve been listening to Decalius. I listen to some of his albums while I run, drive, chill and play the game, or if I’m just laying around. It helps alleviate whatever I’m feeling. Expresses it well for me. Now that’s about the only dsbm band I can listen to. I hate Psychonaut 4
I love dsbm. Totalselfhatred, Psychonaut 4, Suizid, Harakiri for the Sky are bands I've fallen in love with. For someone who deals with clinical depression, I love how the genre captures that feeling. In its own way, it's helping me stay alive.
Hi. I'm not what you'd call a metal fan. Nearest I've ever come to this genre of music is Motorhead and that's it. I just don't listen to it. Then, for some reason, the CZcams algorithm just threw up a band called Blade and Bath. It piqued my curiosity and so I listened. That was that, I was hooked.
I have a history of suffering from major depression and I recognised myself on my worst days in those lyrics. It spoke to me. It was as if someone was vocalising all the things I had never been able to express for myself when I'm ill. So, I think that in some ways that as a genre of music it has it's risks but it also offers catharsis and validation. It says "yes, you feel like this, I feel it too. Let it out."
As a DSBM fan. I would recommend these band who wants to get into the genre. Thy Light, None, Psychonaut 4, Forgotten tomb
I feel like we're forgetting Burzum here
Nice intelligent analysis, subbed.
Ive been told i make digital hardcore but I'm actually not familiar at all lol. I'd love a video on the genre from you, i learn a lot from these 🤘
Thnx for the vid! Couldn't agree with you more when you talked about album art and covers. It's far more disturbing than the blood guts 'n gore of, say, a Cannibal Corpse, or whatever DM / grind band.
My favorite genre
New favourite youtuber ig lmao
Lifelover saved my life.🎉
love the pokemon music in the background haha
Had to do it to em
If you need disclaimers and warnings, metal isn't the genre for you.
DSBM kinda helped me finding myself, at first it was harsh do get behind the sounds but I somehow fell in love with it, dont get me wrong human mental health issues are no fun at all, I've been there, point is if you love heavy and meaningful music DSBM is something you should dip your toe into like you said. Also Traurigkeit is a great artist too, give him a listen!
I'm here just because I like some of the music! If someone wants to commit to it, he shouldn't be listening to this music in the first place. For me this music is relaxing, it puts me in my natural state of mind! I feel like people who have made depression their whole persona, are just narcissistic assholes! Sadness and loneliness aren't to be played with! It's part of life and not the only part! Talk to people guys! It doesn't matter what you say. Just talk!
my therapist told me about this genre, because another of her patients is into it. she said she dislikes it completely and claimed it would romantacize suicide and self harm. is that true though? just asking
i love dsbm- i really like these two russian projects висельник (visel'nik) and минута агонии (minuta agonii). the russians are very good at dsbm for obvious reasons
kanishimi, None, Intig, Svart, Thy light.
I don’t even know what I was listening to get my Spotify weekly to introduce me to lifeless, specifically Forgotten voices on the dreary winter.
My introduction to dsbm, and it’s a really good song, imo.
I'm not depressed at all, I'm just a normal guy enjoying metal and this is one of my favorites, it's just hard to tell people "oh yeah i listen to depressive suicidal black metal 😎" without getting looked oddly
I agree, I want to get into this genre but then it would be weird and I would be labeled as emo just for listening to these type of music, but dosen’t matter.
To 2:36, can someone recommend me bands for this?
The songs can be screamed like for example "Austere - This Dreadful Emptiness" but without the aggression like "Xasthur- Prison of Mirrors"
Would be really grateful for suggestions, I just love it when I get screamed at in an atmospherically sad way!
a ROUGH guide to BDSM
“Remember kids, always go down the highway, not across the street!” The more you know!
I love it! But I do lean towards the style of Thy light more so than the American artists.
I came here to have an understanding of what this is. Because I know of DBM - Drum and Bass music. Definitely not the same, but interesting. That said .. If you want something less harsh, and more electronic, check out SNOG - Buy me I'll change your life. It's nothing like this, so don't expect this. And his side projects like Soma, and Black Lung are definitely worth checking out.
I am very picky and somewhat of an elitist with my DSBM bands. I prefer bands in that very niche sub genre to only be projects that do not perform live in order to give a sense of mystery to the whole thing. Also, I prefer bands that do not abuse the viewer with triggering imagery. That is why my favourite depressive black metal band is a project by the name of NONE; those guys just have landscapes as their album covers and they don’t perform live.
Another nitpick I have with DSBM is that it can be very limiting in my opinion, and I sometimes celebrate bands for departing that style. An example would be the one person project Sadness; they got infinitely better once they decided to do Midwest emo inspired blackgaze.
You should do a video on RABM (Red and Anarchist Black Metal)!
None is awesome !!
@@eyelessjudge9425yes i agree, i discovered none a couple weeks ago and they have quickly become one of my favorites
the more depressed you are the better bands you will find.
Lol I didn't tread into DSBM. I was thrown unwillingly off a bridge into it
i think this is a video that doesn't really focus on getting someone to DSBM but warning people that if their friend ever fall into that category (like me) of blackmetal or metal in general, they can do something and help their suicidal friend, but i just came here to find more DSBM bands
bro literally gave us a sales pitch instead of a guide
Only care about Xasthur and Leviathan. They seem the most real to me. Even if the others might be "better".
5:41 what did he say...
Dsbm is just really good
DSBM 🖤
I love dsbm
I got into DSBM because of psychonaut 4.
Is decalius and blade and bath dsbm? I like listening to them
Soooo, is it just me who likes this stuff because of the way it sounds and not cuz I'm depressed or living through extremely harrowing times?
No. I got recommended Decalius for some reason and I really like his stuff. Gradually checking out some other artists. I find the comments very interesting
psychonaut 4 and decalius are my fav BDSM band and you should check them out
Blade&Bath. Enough said.
Trigger warnings.....very black metal
good guide...
Just a hand full of the real shit.
Freitod Zeremonie - Das Unglück Leben
True Forced Loneliness
Decalius - Ha Ha Ha (The Lonely Cover)
Dead - Cold
Decalius - A Miserable Life

U should listen to this dsbm band called Black Apathy:)
People aound me absolutely suck.
So this isn’t a rough guide to BDSM? 🤔
I must have the wrong class
Im new here and ive never felt more at home. 😅
Why are 3/10 nails painted?
Was preparing for an operation and had to use hand sanitizer and alcohol to get them off, because the surgical anesthesia didn't allow any sort of nail polish. Hadn't gotten all of it off. :p

“Atmospheric “ usually means shit production
Noone need a Guide to DSBM. Either you are a prisoner of your depression or you are not. DSBM only helps to cope with it. BTW: Nobody needs a guide to DSBM. Either you are a prisoner of your depressions or you are not. DSBM only helps to deal with it. By the way: It's the small, unknown bands that build you up in a pleasant way by dragging you down.
