Gending Sriwijaya Dance is a traditional dance originating from the Palembang area, South Sumatra Province. The term "Gending Sriwijaya" comes from the meaning of the word "Gending" which means melody or sound and the word "Sriwijaya" which means symbolizing the Sriwijaya Kingdom; a large kingdom in Palembang in the 6th century BC In the past, this dance was only performed to welcome royal guests. Gending Sriwijaya Dance is a dance that depicts the joy of Palembang girls when receiving great guests or those who are glorified by the Sriwijaya Kingdom, followed by a friendly, open and sincere attitude from the host. Usually performed by 9 female dancers. This dance was first performed in front of the public on August 2, 1945 in the courtyard of the Great Mosque of Palembang. The performance was in the context of the implementation of the arrival ceremony of Mr. M. Syafei (Chairman of the Sumatra People's Representative Council) and Mr. Djamaluddin Adinegoro (Chairman of the Sumatra Daily Council) at that time. Thus, currently it can be said that the function of the Sumatran Gending Dance is as a welcoming dance for distinguished guests who come to Palembang, such as the President, Vice President, Ministers, Governors, Ambassadors, members of the royal family, and so on.

Thank you from palembang
