  • Hey guys! We hope you enjoy our reaction to Olivia Newton-John! Mia and I LOVED her voice. We couldn't believe it when we heard the news of her passing. Mia and I have never watched Grease however, we know we missed out. She had an incredible voice and from the video we can tell she was a wonderful woman! She made us feel magic through this song. Her presence was angelic! She will be truly missed.

I have to compliment Mia on her comment that the beginning sounds so creepy. That's actually a tribute to John Farrar's writing. His writing for the album this song is on shows a creativity of thought in not just this song, but other songs on the album, like "Suddenly." Without getting too esoteric, most songs would just bounce from the tonic to the dominant (DO to SOL), or somesuch. Assume the song's in the key of C, so a normal song would go C to G then C to G, etc. Farrar gave this background the "creepy" sound (which I found so refreshing and original) by going from C to Gb (G-FLAT), one-half step down. I've never heard another pop song that emphasized this interval.
Again, Mia was really listening. I've watched numerous reactors listen to this song and make nary a comment about this. They would just go on and on about Olivia's voice or the band or whatever. But I've NEVER heard anyone comment on this unusual interval in the background. (Don't mind me; I get wrapped up in this type of thing because of my music degree. We would discuss this type of thing in theory classes.) Good ears, Mia! :)

My first, and only, celebrity crush (1983~????). An amazingly skilled singer who was beautiful inside and out, Olivia Newton-John was the epitome of gracious. My admiration for her has only grown since that day so long ago when an 8 year old boy stumbled upon her in the film Xanadu (Magic is from that movie, it has a great soundtrack), and she will forever hold a special place in his heart.
Farewell dear Olivia...may flights of angels wing you to your rest ❤

In the movie Xanadu she played the role of a Muse, one of Zeus's daughters. A muse guides the creativity of artists and writers without their being aware of them. But in the movie she reveals herself to the guy she was inspiring. The music of Xanadu is just great and Olivia's songs are the stand out of them all, she is a magical and mysterious as she guides two men into fulfilling a dream. Many diss the movie for some reason but I love it and Olivia really suits her role and her voice is just wonderful. When I heard of her passing, I named a Starship in the game Star Trek Online after her and it is the pride of my fleet. She will be sorely missed. R.I.P.

Sad to think of a world without ONJ in it. I was 8 or 9 when I got my first portable record player for Xmas. I wanted only that & Lovely Livvie’s Have You Never Been Mellow Album. I played all her albums over & over. When I was 12 we saw Grease in the theatre 13x that summer & wore the soundtrack out. We had roller skates for the physical album & the soundtrack from Xanadu (Olivia & ELO!). She was so beautiful inside & out. About 12 years ago I attended the David Foster & Friends Gala in Vancouver, BC (David & the headliner, Michael Buble are from here). There were a lot of performers but the surprise for David, who launched so many careers & wrote so many hits including for ONJ, was a surprise appearance by Olivia. She flew 17 hrs from Australia the day before to be there for her friend (he was receiving a prestigious Canadian award for his charity work). She performed five songs & a duet with Michael Buble & I felt like that girl again, thrilled to finally see her live. She didn’t disappoint, Hopelessly Devoted to You sounded exactly the same & is the perfect song to describe how we always felt and will always feel about our angel Olivia.

    Hi Girls,
"Magic" is from a 1980 movie musical called 'Xanadu'. In the film, Olivia plays Kira, whose real name is Terpsichore (Terp-sick-o-ree) one of the Nine Muses, the Goddesses of Greek mythology who help to inspire humanity in the realm of creativity, especially music, poetry, drama, dance, and such. She is to inspire a painter to dream big and create something big. The movie is one of my absolute favorites, but it is not, technically. a "good movie". It has a really thin story, but lots of great music with fun sequences. Every song is performed by Olivia or by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), with the title song, "Xanadu", performed by Olivia AND ELO (and written by Jeff Lynne, the singer of ELO). The movie was a box-office bomb, but the soundtrack was a big seller back in 1980.
In the context of the movie, this song is playing in the background for the first scene where Kira talks to the man she must inspire, Sonny. When you look at the lyrics...it very much is a goddess saying to a mortal, listen to me...there is magic in you. I'll help you find it.
I was about 9 when I saw the movie and I already had a huge crush on Olivia, which never really left. With her passing, I was heartbroken. I hope that you find time to see 'Grease' and 'Xanadu', and react to more of Olivia and songs like "Xanadu", "Hopelessly Devoted To You", "Have You Never Been Mellow", "Twist Of Fate", "Make A Move On Me", "Suddenly", "A Little More Love", and "Physical" to name a few of my favorites.
RIP, Livvy! You will be missed.

This song in its release yr was truely Magic and perfect title and intention for the song to be, they mastered it! There was nothing being played like it and it was still a hit! Like yall agreed "Dreamy"
It was like a magical dreamy fantasy travel journey song thru time and space and still a hit among its peer songs that were hard or had a stronger melody, beats, guitar, vocals, etc. Only Olivia could pull this off, kinda think about it.
I loved it as a preteen. One period during its still fresh release on the radio.. Me and my sister had to wake up early, to then get driven to my aunts house, to then get a few more hrs of sleep before sunrise to then go to school. My cousin would hv her radio turned low and we all slept same 👸 bed, without fail Magic would come on and wake me up as everyone was fast asleep. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It went great with the peace of the low lit room from the radio light. 📻
Magic also was a little bit longer than most song times, so I had to kinda burn crucial sleep time listening to it end, then maybe spend another 15-20 min getting back to sleep. Then waking up sleep deprived. This had to have happened 100 times or more??? Whoever the station host was for KVIL in Dallas, Tx, they loved to play Magic between 3am-6am and for some reason I caught it everytime, alone as everyone slept?? Be cool if they have a library of time logs to go research thru and see I wasn't imagining this and see the exact times they were played in the wee hrs. 🌃

Farrah Fawcett and Olivia Newton John was hot to look at on 16-teen magazines at that time. I remember this song Magic 1980 album Xanadu in my youth. It got that sexy groove sounds on her etc. LoL 😝 I was in 5th grade elementary school. I always wanted a Pin-up or Poster on my bedroom wall of those beautiful ladies of Farrah and Olivia at that time. My parents said: NO you’re too young to look at females like that etc. LoL 😝 They said: Study your homework. I just wanted to blend-in with the older generation. 😢 Anyways! They did the song, White Punks on Dope, Don't touch me there, and others. The tubes were a cult band from San Francisco. It was an 80's flop film, but Olivia and Gene Kelly? This was one of the big pop sound wallpapers of my youth, impossible to avoid, but one of the best ones compared to so many other hits.
Like many big hits it was played on high rotation on the radio, but contrary to many other good pop songs, it wasn't ruined that much by it, perhaps because it was so much better produced and performed. And because of her beautiful voice.
Newton-John also had a monster hit with "Xanado". Also worth a listen.

"Innocent Siren"...heh heh...What you feel from her is a good description.
She once in a while portrayed a "sexy" person but it was always "tongue-in-cheek" (not real)...If you look back at her career, she started off as sweet/mellow and got criticized for that. But I guess it really was her true personality based on how other people/friends adored/described her. Many say you can't meet her and not fall in love with her personality.
Her career started changing as the video generation started taking off, but then her cancer took her out of the industry....
...and sadly she got left behind/forgotten...Great job on this review/reaction!

It looks like it was an unfortunate coincidence that she passed right when they were reacting to one of her videos. Hopefully they will react to LINDA RONSTADT (Blue Bayou, please) while she is still with us here.

Definitely one over my favorite ONJ songs. It should have been a #1 song on the charts. 😀

The original Aussie export pop princess and a great ambassador for her country.
As a full-blown Metalhead, she has been a guilty pleasure for me since I was a kid and am enjoying seeing reactions to her songs now..., But I have to say I'm dreading the day Kylie Monougue dies. I don't think I'm gonna cope with anyone fawning over her music!

What a coincidence! I watch the Olivia's career and listen the 71-83 era, how she's a fenomenal singer! Listen "Me and Bob Mcgee" ou "What is a Life" ou "A Little More Love" (my favorite) ou "Xanadu"! And others...she was Magic! I don't know how is Wonder the Olivia Newton-John's discography. God bless her...

The best way to enjoy this song is the video of it from the movie Xanadu staring her and so many great songs to this movie

During this song in the movie [I recently watched it] all it was used for was background transitional music. It should have been a big production number...they missed a big opportunity on that. How dumb...the single record was huge.

Don't worry, this old man reacted to those beginning chords same way when it was new lol. And I was a music teacher in public schools. it sets up the "mysterious magic" going on. RIP Olivia, you were a great human being and true heartthrob for the guys. Her voice could fluctuate between that soft sound, but make no mistake; she could belt out louder and certainly higher, always on pitch, no freaking auto tune.. one of her trademarks is her extremely good vibrato....she always made a song her own without straying from the spirit of the song to do operatic solos that become about the singer and not the song, like they all do now. Did you the Jeff Lynn and the ELO band did these songs for the movie? Olivia is singing with ELO on Magic, and Xanadu! And I believe a few other songs done by ELO without her for the movie. The movie was a flop....but the music sold millions. Gene Kelly, famous Hollywood movie star, dancer and choreographer was in this, it was his last film at age 68. He choreographed a dance in which he and Olivia dance together in a fantasy scene about big band music. He made sure Olivia looked good dancing, that was his goal, wrote it specifically for her, and him as a partner.

Thank you girls for the beautiful tribute to Olivia. When I heard of her passing I didn’t want to believe the sad news. She was awesome in the classic movie Grease. If you get the chance can you react to my favorite Olivia song “You’re The One I Want” sung with John Travolta.
