Organic Farming at Organo- Farmlands in Hyderabad

Organic farming in the sense Vedic farming is what we predominantly use, and permaculture. There are several other techniques of organic farming also available. We have stuck to Vedic farming for the sole reason that cow is what is important. We have about 35 varieties of vegetables including the leafy. We have 15 varieties of fruits. We have 95 varieties of medicinal plants that grow here. Medicinal plants we also use for our preparations. And then we have apiculture also that we do with the honey bees. Honey bees are very important to ensure that there are forests. And we also have fishes in the ponds. How we use them is when we help algae grow in the water, for fishes to consume on, and when they excrete in the water, the water becomes very nutritious for the plants. So the plants feed on that nutrition when we water them from that pond.
We have cows, we have goats, sheep, chicken, turkeys, guinea hens, ducks. So all of them are used in one or the other way in farming. We do rainwater harvesting ponds. We make natural ponds. We have one pond which holds about 15 lakh liters of water. We have four other ponds which hold about 3 to 5 lakhs liters of water. All of it is again used for agriculture.
Art of Living helps us convert the farmers around into organic farming. We want them also to do organic farming because it’s not just beneficial if we do organic farming. We also need others to do. If my neighbor is spraying pesticides and I’m doing organic, it comes through air, it comes through water when it rains. So my field is also becoming inorganic in a way. When they come here they say, “In our farm we do this. We spray this and it’s gone. We won’t have any weeds again.” I tell them, “No, you have to do it like this only.” So it takes a lot of effort. Over time, now they’re realizing that something like this is possible. And I hope they go back and do it at their own farm.
So when I came here initially I’ve seen this being a barren land, so I never thought that it’ll become like this. Three years down the line, now when I see it, it’s beautiful.
