  • After Nico Hulkenberg announced his transfer to Sauber for the 2025, everyone thought that more dominoes might begin to fall this silly season and just a few weeks later, Williams have surprised everyone by signing Alex Albon onto an extended contract. Like a toy a toddler is no longer interested in, Red Bull cast him aside after 2020 and that could have been the end of his career but a very impressive comeback at Williams has raised Albon’s stock to the point that he was in the conversation for potentially taking over a Red Bull seat for 2025, or filling the empty spot at Mercedes. Alex’s commitment to Williams is a massive message to the rest of the grid and will have a huge impact on the remaining driver’s market, so let’s check it out.

When you crash, and the team literally gives you the car of your inner team competitor who didn't, probably a good sign the team REALLY wants you there.

The "team mate" would have almost certainly crashed the car, anyway, as that team mate has done at the majority of races

Shafted? He sucked! What else are RB supposed to do, keep letting him be like Lance Stroll just because Christian Horner wants to be a nice guy? That's not how it works in F1, sonny. You're supposed to have it all together before you get there.

It sounds as if there's a good chance that Anonelli may end up partnering Alex at Williams. If that doesn't happen, I think Gasly would be a good option to help propel Williams up a couple of notches. I'd love to see Williams fighting for wins again. It's been a long time.

Honestly. I think Albon made the right choice. Williams is on the rise (eventhough theyre struggling now) mercedes is on a downfall. At least until 2026. He can hold the leadership position at Williams, and form that team around him.

I think Alex made the right move. With any job you have to be comfortable where you are. He already had the cut throat experience with Red Bull, so clearly he knows that's not where he wants to be. I think James Vowles has shown himself to be a team principle that actually cares about driver development. He could have cut Logan Sergeant loose at the end of last year, but didn't, opting to give him another chance. It's good to work for an organization that values the people that work for them, and I think that's what Alex has seen. Now it's up to Williams to spend the money to come through with a competitive car.

We’re elated Alex got a new contract with Williams! They’ve given him incredible support since his original signing. That’s more than what Red Bull had done. They replaced him before he actually got going. 🏁

Im SOOO SOOO GLAD hes staying at Williams. I would rather see him build n get stronger in as team that believes in him and inturn he can help them towards other end of the grid.
I think him being at RB was jsut too much of a pressure pot and weve seen the same with other drivers there

Like Ferrari and McLaren, the heritage of the Williams team is pretty pure. (Think Juan Montoya, Keke Rosberg. Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jacque Villnueve, David Coultard , and Ralf Schumacher) ...and to fill lthose shoes by bringing back Williams to it's glory days ...well that is F**cking priceless!

Was Albon ever seriously considerd by any of the top teams? Red Bull has too many drivers allready Ferrari ,Aston Martin, McLaren aren't looking for a driver .That leaves only Mercedes and there is the threat of Antonelli in the wings so that's a short therm deal as a 2nd driver at best. So that brings the bottom 5 Sauber and RB don't need him and why would you go to a new team that is on the same level.

Albon only really had one choice to move upwards. Of the teams likely to beat Williams, only Mercedes has an empty seat, and possibly Red Bull, however Albon would gain nothing by going back to race against Verstappen. Mercedes is on a downhill and seems to look for something else.
Instead Albon could choose to be the number 1 driver at a team he knows well, and is moving up in the field. Which makes for a much better environment. It is also very likely he will gain a new teammate there and that only gives Albon more options to prove he is a better driver.

Good for Alex. Williams will not win the championship, nor will 9 other teams. But he will have the satisfaction of contributing to its rebuilding and be appreciated for that. Mercedes have outsmarted themselves thinking the are in the cat bird seat. They're not and are being beaten by two of their customers. So why would the drivers go drive for them? Sainz should just suck it up and sign for Audi.

Really was there even a spot for Alex Albon. He wouldn't of got the Redbull second seat, Mercedes was only offering 1 year and the other teams were pants. Audi probably already has ideas who there second driver is. Aston Martin doesn't have the balls to drop Lance Stroll. It's not really as open a market as people hint at.

See last year when Williams was a rocket on the straights but it is a deadend development path without corner performance. Sometimes you have to suck it up and grind through a difficult car with poor performance. There car is overweight (like Alpine) so getting that car downto weight will boost performance they mentioned 4 tenths due to weight. McLaren did it but they gained a whole second last year. Williams won't do that but +.4s is a massive jump.
