Nothing quite captures the imagination like the Olympic games. There is just something about these incredible competitions that taps into the human spirits, and globally, people are drawn in to the storylines, the triumphs, the heartbreak, and of course, the smashing of world records. There’s a reason that over 3.2 billion people will tune in and cheer on not only these amazing athletes from the sports that they love, but any and all competitors that represent the countries that they live in. It’s a beautiful thing, and countries spend a fortune getting their cities up to snuff to make sure that their Olympics is the most impressive Olympics yet. But here’s the underside that no one ever seems to talk about. The fate of all these structures years after the games have concluded. See, the truth is, unfortunately theres not much of a market for a state of the art Kayaking facility, or a multi million dollar olympic sized swimming pool after the games have come and gone. And the fate of these one majestic venues is the same across the globe. They are left to rot. Today we are taking a look at many of these abandoned Olympic buildings that can be found all around the world. It’s a shame too, as many of these structures were top of the line when they were first built. But if you don’t use it, you lose it. And that certainly seems to be the case with what we are about to show you today.

Same for Atlanta he said Olympic cauldron was crumbling but the stadium that’s shown was destroyed because the occupants moved out but now there building apartments right next to it and the other things listed aren’t really in a populated area. They also have the Olympic park still hosting events they had several concerts there when they had the Super Bowl.

@@lembuice8900 In Atlanta the Olympic stadium was turned into Turner Field and when the Braves left, it was bought by Georgia State University and repurposed and downsized into Georgia State Stadium. Some of the other Atlanta Facilities are now part of Georgia Tech University, Georgia State University, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Morris Brown College. Others have been torn down. I believe that Atlanta used college dorms for its athlete housing and Olympic Village on the campuses of Georgia Tech, Georgia State, and Clark Atlanta Universities. .

There is some major information missing from this video. Berlin’s 1936 village had been abandoned as it was seen as an exercise in Nazi propaganda. However the athletes village is about to be torn down or converted into luxury accommodation. The 1984 Sarajevo structures are in ruins due to a civil war that took place after then games.
London used existing buildings and only built what could have a second life. I believe the only things to be torn down were the two story McDonalds and the basketball arena. The stadium, aquatics centre, velodrome, and copper box arena are still in use. The athletes houses have either been redeveloped or are in the process of being so. I believe most of Sochi’s Olympic venues are also in use. Hell they built a race track around their Olympic buildings!

First of all bring up berlin Olympic area from 1936, wehre the most parts of the area (including the old stadium) are still in use after more than 80 years and one world war. Then London where the most locations are reused too. But the king of ignorance for me ist to talk about Sarajevo not even mentioned the war crimes happen her as key reason for the abandoned olimpic area.

Let’s also highlight that after London 2012 was over all bidding processes and presentations for future Olympics (the first being Tokyo 2020) dramatically changed to ensure sustainability and avoidance of underutilized legacy venues. The example of London is now integral to being successful in winning the right to host a games. Unfortunately the Rio bid was granted in 2009 I think (they are usually 7 years prior to hosting) so the sustainable legacy was not as prominent as post 2012 bids. Even if East london has had a few minor problems after the games, the fact that London changed the actual playing field for bids is a huge success.
