    This bass fishing video explains how to fish a swimbait. Matt uses a Huddleston Deluxe for the example but these basic retrieves can be used for every swimbait for bass or even saltwater species like Calico Bass.
    Many bass fisherman are afraid to cast a swimbait. Their size is intimating and it makes it difficult for anglers to believe they can work. If you use these 3 simple retrieves you'll gain confidence quickly and begin catching big bass on swimbaits sooner. Its not rocket science, any fisherman can do this. If you throw the bigger baits and stick to it, your turn to catch a monster bass will come sooner than you expect!

    Hey Matt and Tim, could you please give me a general rule of thumb in regards to what ROF to use for each depth? 5ft? 10ft? 15ft? In this instance I am talking about the slow creeping retrieve.

    Awesome! I've had a hud for a while but never really knew if I was throwing it right or not. When your crawling that thing that slow especially with a 5:1:1 it doesn't lay over on its side? That is why I can't wrap my head around that crawl. I just always feel like I'm imitating a dead fish being drug around. lol. Thanks again Matt! You guys rock!

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety +3

      That's why you're throwing a hudd or other high quality swimbait (we linked to some others in the video description) if you're using a knock off they'll lay on their sides. The high quality baits lay upright on bottom and look great at super slow speed. :-)

  • @robmoseley5265

    so true on the 3rd method you speak of. biggest bass i ever hooked and saw was the same. on fly, sneaky pete just bobbing it in the same spot by giving the slightest of strips and she comes beneath to inspect and almost "smells" the fly. a few quick, short striips and she was on! ....for a second, way too small a hook for that big of a fish! damn, a maddening strike

    the jerkbait description on the final retrieve is perfect. i used to fish the original LC Flash Minnow in clear water in NY. i could see bass come up and track it and i would just kill it. the bass wouldn't move an inch. maybe drift downards under it. then, without fail, giving a couple quick reels would make those bass commit to grabbing it.

I bought a Hudd rod and I have an old garcia 6500C on it but casting is not what I like. I have been looking at the Diawa Lexa 400HD because of what I have been reading and watching on CZcams. I fish from the bank so I need castability and a deep spool so what I hear this is the one. Is it hype or the real deal? Ha! That episode... what a mess. If they hadn't done all that fancy editing you would have watched me stick a 51 lb limit for 5 bass in less than 3 hours. :-) It was hands down the best bite I've ever seen!

      Boy, looking for this episode I realized how much content you got out there Matt n Tim. I don't think anyone in the industry can even come close to the vid time you've logged thats purely out of love for the art. Shit thats real cannot be denied. The whole industry will end up here eventually.
      Without TB I could have missed out on a lot of good memories. Thank you!

    Never fished them... In my mind the the open hook would get caught up too much. Is that not a normal problem for this bait?

  • @mr.fatbasstard648
    @mr.fatbasstard648 Před 7 lety

    Slow as you can go then slow down some more! If I feel a ticking strike or a fish bump I don't slow down or speed up my retrieve I'll stay there as long as possible without stopping hoping to piss them off. If I have followers (a sign of more active fish) I'll make a second cast covering the same area and use an occasional side sweep flick n pause retrieve that induces an about-face to my swim bait. One other retrieve that I like to use, is None!! A dead-stick or drifting floaty in clear water over a tapering point or drop off or a shallow weed bed shoreline.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety +2

      You have more patience than me... I HATE deadsticking! I've caught my share of fishing doing it but man I hate it! I'd rather stare at a bobber lol

    loved the video especially because I'm trying to get into swimbaiting. one question though, if I'm mostly going to fish in lakes where trout are not present would it matter if I used a trout colored hudd and if so what color would be best? thanks

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety

      In my opinion, it doesn't matter. If you have a forage base that one of their colors match then use that but here on Clearlake there are no trout and "rainbow trout" is still my favorite color of huddleston.

  • @tedmccarthy1401
    @tedmccarthy1401 Před 7 lety

    awesome video Matt!!! I am thinking back and the Swaver retrieval types are very similar with the Huddleston. So my big question is if I am throwing one or the other, what would you say is the major difference in retrieval? Thank you so much for your time and knowledge of bass fishing and keep up the good work Matt!!!!!

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety

      The S-Waver is much more "reactive" meaning you do those things much more often to the bait. The huddleston, even when you're trying to be really reactive will only be done 2, maybe 3 times in the entire cast.

      Hey Mark! All the details of gear with links to each one is in the video description. We just starting doing that but its been going great so we'll continue with all future videos. Now you don't have to search for the gear, its all listed out. Hope that helps!

      TacticalBassin very cool thank you ! Somehow I missed that! I am in the east, Pennsylvania. Our lakes don't have trout. But lots of Shad as far as a starter bait I am sold on the Huddleston. I see Tackle-warehouse carries a green gizzard Shad option. Do you think that matching the hatch as they say is important? Should I stick to the tried and true trout?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety +1

      If there is a good match, definitely go with it! The trout is just a complex color that seems to get bit well but that doesn't make it the end all be all.

    great vid Mat. I'v just started throwing swimbaits this past three months. Would you be able to show the difference between using 200 size reels vs higher capacity reels. It seems they take up the same lpi. the 200s feel fine to me. Does it increase casting distance? Does it really matter? Would a video be possible comparing casting difference? Thanks for all your info

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety

      We could probably do that. Main difference though is torque. Its not about storing line, its about being able to turn a giant's head that one time that you really need to so she doesn't come off.

    I was looking to get the ROF #5 but I see its not rigged with hooks. Or that is my understanding. Do you guys have a video on how you set up the bait itself? The size and style hook(s) etc. Oh and great video on the retrieves.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 7 lety +1

      The ROF 5 with jig hook exists but they're really hard to find. We typically just get the ROF 12 and call it good. We don't have a full rigging video but we'll probably do one soon.

      Depends on the behaviour of the fish. If they're on bottom, yes you need to creep.
