"I let it slide like a hose on a slippery plastic summer”
I interpret that line as Taylor depicting something slipping out of her grasp. No matter how much the metaphorical hose was slipping, she didn't let it go. She couldn’t fully ignore the unmarked calls. She noticed them (the hose slipping/sliding around in her grasp) and “let it slide”, but never let go of the mental note that it (the hose) was slipping.

Harry Styles was (allegedly) literally going on blind dates! His song “Carolina” is about Townes Adair Jones, a girl he went on a blind date with. So imagine Taylor’s heartbreak when she’s in love with him and he can’t commit to her - for what? He wasn’t even leaving her to be with his true soul mate or something, he was going on blind dates with strangers! Imagine Taylor’s rumination on why he couldn’t love her back.
Girl. You are right on the money with how, in her words, “we had to make some hard choices” about which songs to leave off were decisions made to stray away from the hopeless damsel that was dumped. I feel like I knew that, but you put the perfect words to describe it. You’re soo right.
Unpopular opinion… I think (when you have time) that you should make deep dives for all of Taylor’s albums. I would love to hear Ally talk about Fearless, Lover, Evermore and even a bit more about Folklore. The other albums have multiple videos, these albums need to be discussed by a professional.

The progression from “You’re not saying you’re in love with me but you’re going to” in “Slut!” to “I said I love you, you say nothing back” is the perfect example of the storytelling you mentioned and also absolutely heartbreaking 💔 just wanted to mention that in case somebody had missed it!
Also the "I think about jumping off of very tall somethings just to see you come running and say the one thing I've been wanting - but no" in Is It Over Now :)

Ive always loved the amount of lyrical parallels in This Love (first song written for 1989) with the rest of 1989. 'Silent screams' = 'I screamed so loud but no one heard a thing' from Clean, 'in Wildest dreams' literally from Wildest Dreams, 'skies grew darker' = 'the sky turned black like a perfect storm' from Clean, 'losing grip on sinking ships' = 'lose lips sink ships all the damn time' in I Know Places etc. It honestly fascinates me, that she wrote This Love first and was able to almost create songs based from that 1 song/story which was originally just a poem in her journal.

Seeing all the parallels the professional swifties draw between the vault tracks and songs from entirely different albums is making me think that Harry is the one that she’ll never be able to forget or fully, truly move on from. Either literally or as an inspiration for her best songs 😂

Yes, it’s about what you said re: relationships that don’t really take off or finish abruptly. You don’t get to see the real person. So Your imagination gets wild with possibilities and what ifs .. so loads of inspiration.
When I first heard "I let it slide like a hose on a slippery plastic summer" I immediately thought of how often those backyard slip n' slides can hurt. Like yeah you expect to slide without any problems, but if you don't have enough water you will skid on the dry patches and it'll burn your skin if you're not careful. So she "lets it slide" expecting it to be easy, but it actually really does hurt.
In September of 2012 One Direction shot a music video for Live while we're young with a slide in it. There's a very slight possibility lyrics reference some event around that time we don't know about
That’s a great thought! Also bumps on the ground underneath them can make them hurt or unpleasant. It’s not always a smooth ride.

Just wanted to mention a parallel I noticed:
'The rest of the world was black & white/we were in screaming colour'. In 'slut!' she literally mentions screaming colours: flamingo pink, aquamarine moonlit swimming pool, tangerine neon lights. It's like this relationship heightened her senses to a whole new level. (Also, in 'Illicit Affairs' she goes 'you showed me colours I can't see with anyone else.')

I also think the part in Is it over now? “Just to see you come running and say the one thing I’ve been wanting” could be a reference to Say don’t go where Taylor wants him to say “I love you”. The one thing she wants him to run to her and say is “I love you”

One of my fave things about Taylor's songwriting is how I forget it's literally her job! Like, she writes these phrases and tries them out in different songs and if it doesn't work, she reworks them into something else! It's such a cool process which I dont think is talked about enough. People assume she just sits and plays her guitar and comes up with a full song on the spot - which sometimes also happens - but for the most part, it's her coming to meetings with ideas/phrases/poems/melodies and working with other people to create the final product which I think is so cool.
Argentina won with the mashup, and I know she scolded us for chanting reputation, even tho we NEED IT!!!!! ❤

I think that the "I'll hold my breath a little bit longer" in Say Don't Go kinda ties to Clean, cause she is holding her breath esentially for him, just like hoping that it will work out somehow, but in Clean she lets out the breath she's been holding and starts to drown and that when she can finally breathe, cause like she finally ended the uncertainty, she stopped holding breath for him and started to breathe for herself

I interpreted the “only rumors about my hips & thighs” line as her saying “I made sure to not give the tabloids any ammo or anything to talk about in regards to my dating life whereas Harry was alllllll over the tabloids with all his new girls. I think she’s saying like she had the decency to not put him through having to see her move on, etc.
The poker/card game lyric ties into Cornelia street as well! “Back when we were card sharks, playing games” and “But then you called, showed your hand”, so she’s used the romance as a card game metaphor again. We love to see it. ❤

i personally interpret the "only rumors about my hips and thighs" line in Is It Over Now meaning that while Harry was parading his new woman/women to the public and making it known he was dating them, Taylor kept her flings away from the public eye like she says, so there were *only rumors* about her love/sex life instead of actual proof she was dating or hooking up with someone. it kinda piggybacks off the line before it ("at least i had the decency to keep my nights out of sight").
100% agree about don’t listen to now that we don’t talk while thinking of an ex-best friend. That was the hardest heartbreak I’ve had, still feeling the grief almost 6 years since I last saw them. It’s such a great vault
I'm 100% an is it over now? girlie but that line in now that we dont talk "remind myself the more i gave you'd want me less" hits so brutally when you're someone and the more you flirt or just "try" with them, the more theyre turned off. Its so relatable and so hesrtbreaking!!

I'm pretty sure Harry has said/confirmed that his song "Carolina" is about a girl he met on a blind date, and then never saw again. 100 % agree that it would be surreal being set up on a blind date with either Harry Styles or Taylor Swift, but it is the most main character thing living that moment and them writing a song about you! What an icon, I can't imagine being that cool.

What I love about listening to the vault songs, as someone who has listened to her music and been a fan since the beginning, is just how they all feel perfect for each album. While these songs were written at the time of the original release with younger Taylor, they needed to be released with the current, older Taylor. She needed to grow and learn her lessons in a way that gives life to her vault tracks now. All the way from Bye Bye Baby to All Too Well 10 to songs like S!ut and Is It Over Now. Timeless, for example was the perfect Speak Now song but I can see why it didn’t fit the original release.

I was so amazed on how close your predictions came when I first heard the vault songs! Love how much work you put into this video and I learned a few things that I didn’t know even being a long time fan. And that’s actually insane how she played the mashup after you filmed this. There’s the Alex and Sierra song called “I Love You” that they insinuated was written by Harry for Taylor. It’s sad about loving someone now that they don’t want you to. It also has a similar lyrical moment to August - tracing your name on my back.
@@F1Swiftie Their insinuation is only a guess, just like you or me. He never confirms who his songs are about. I seriously doubt it was about her. He said in an interview he doesn't want other people to sing his songs that he considers personal to him. He gave that song away for other people to sing. Songs don't have to be autobiographical all the time.

I really like the level of detail you give in your reviews. You are right. Some vault songs are great to hear now, but could have drawn the upbeat mood down if released back then. I enjoy hearing your takes on the vault songs.
Sonically, All You Had Too Do Was Stay is the least track 5 that ever track 5ed, however lyrically it tells a much different story, one that is a track 5 song very much so

on another note, adding more pain to say don’t go’s context, it felt like since she, at the back of her mind, knew that he won’t be saying those 3 specific words back, it’s as if “say don’t go” was her consolation and equivalent to saying “i love you”. talk about settling for less 😭

Most of my friends outgrew Taylor as teenagers and even those who have jumped back on board can’t hold these conversations because they don’t get it
