  • Taking a look at the latest Wingspansion by Stonemaier Games. Also, just throwing out that I kinda love the lighting in this vid.

This was easily the best review of Oceania yet, and I've watched them all. I like the game mechanics/balance angle... Even though might extend to mention the new automa variants, round goals etc (especially the "no goal" is interesting).

Wow this is an excellent break down of this expansion. Things I haven't thought of even while owning the expansion and watching tons of videos on it. Very nicely done. I liked the European expansion because it could so seamlessly be integrated and was hesitant when I learned of this one and it's changes. This may be an alright addition then. It's all or nothing with me, no way am I separating that huge stack of cards again after mixing them lol.

As an Alaskan, it makes me want to visit your neck of the woods even more! (As if the other 1000 reasons weren't enough...)

@@TheCardboardHerald we are very lucky here and you would be most welcome! We have a great board gaming community here. As a NZer, I have to remind myself how lucky we really are in our tiny, but diverse island. We have some gorgeous birds, so I can’t wait to see them in Wingspan. The Kereru is a particular favourite

@@StratfordWingRider Gorgeous birds, incredible scenery and wonderful people if my experience is anything to go by. As an Australian I am also stoked for this expansion and I somehow managed to snag myself a copy this afternoon! Can't wait to take it for a spin this week!

Great review. Pretty much sums up my own experience of this expansion as well, after just 5 games until now.
A seemingly drawback for me so far though is what seems to be the constant hunt for nectar. It adds a bit more stress level to the game, than before. And the casual/mellow tone of the original was certainly one of the primary reasons that my wife and I love it so much. Really not seriously being able to annoy each other too much during the game.
But grabing the only avaliable nectar several times in front of your opponents, not only is the usual annoyance, but now also have potential significant end game scoring effect. Which makes it a bit more frustrating for the random lucky/unlucky dice rolls...
There is no real drawback to always go for the nectar, except for the last action in each round (since you then won't have time to spend it).
But while you opponents may be roling loads, you could end up getting none, or only very few. And empty habitats seems devastating.
But time will tell if this is just something to get used to (after playing the original way past a hundred times we needed a push out if our comfort zones), or if it becomes a constant issue... We will see. Certainly pumped to play more to find out anyway😁

If you had to get the European or Oceania expansion which one would you choose?

Easily I’d get the Oceania expansion. I like both but I like the changes Oceania makes to the game, I think the game end powers are more interesting and strategy-impacting than the round end powers, and Oceania has some of the most interesting bird species (theme wise) in the game so far. Bare in mind, some people don’t like Oceania as much and prefer the traditional Wingspan experience. If you love Wingspan but don’t want to add more complexity or new layers to the game but just want more birds and a couple interesting new types of abilities, go Euro. Hope that helps!
