  • A Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) is a switch that is triggered by the voltage of an electrical current. VSR applications are popular in dual battery systems with a standard alternator set up.

Oh yeah, he remembered to mention Standard Alternator Setups. A by-pass has to be fitted with Smart Alternators which are more common on newer vehicles. Oh this guy is saavy. And what an awesome video too. Thank you sir.

We have this sort of set up in our Semi to run the APU, the problem is the APU will run the secondary batteries down then it will run the main batteries down so the truck won't start. What do you think the problem would be, the main batteries shouldn't run down. There are four batteries for the starter and four for the APU all hooked in parallel and they all run down. The starter batteries are 1 year old.

Hi thanks for the info , this is all new to me , all vsrs seem to have very high ratings (140amp), I’ve always fitted 30 to 40 amp relays in a split charge system , my current alternator is 70amp , I’m concerned about damaging my alternator , can you enlighten me ?

So if you have a 140a alternator, will the relay send 140a to the leisure battery?
Most dc to dc chargers only output around 20-50amps, so will using a VSR charge the leisure battery quicker? 🤔

    Hi Adam,
    Thanks for the great video.
Can you tell me what happens between cut in and cut out voltages? Is the relay on or off?

What happens if you have new alternator and new main battery but you are still getting12.6 voltage while car is running?

Can you use a VSR to protect an alternator from a overvoltage/undervotage BMS cut off on LiFePo4 batteries. I have heard people can protect there alternator by installing a dc to dc battery charger off the starter to the house bank. So that the alternator only charges the starter battery and the house bank is charged via the dc/dc charger.

Great video. Any idea why my VSR keeps clicking? I have it connected to leisure battery (AND solar panel via controller). I can isolate it from starter battery & from leisure battery. The VSR works fine when I turn engine on. Whilst in my van with engine off it starts clicking like crazy. When I isolate it from start battery clicking continues. When I isolate it from leisure it stops. There was a yellow wire in VSR that if connected allowed a closed circuit between both batteries. I just left this inside & unconnected. I then cut it off down to 5mm but this did not stop the clicking either. - thanks Paul

Can a VSR be used to keep truck battery charged when stored for long periods . The solar charges the house batteries so can the VSR send charge to the starter battery from the house batteries?

Can the VSR connect to an Anderson plug. It would be an open circuit if caravan not plugged in. Is that ok?

Hi Rayan, to be completely certain it is best to contact the dealer as they should have that information, however you can always check forums as they are a great help, unfortunately we don't have a list of what vehicles do and don't have smart alternators.

Great explanation. How can I diagnose if my DSVR has failed or not? It seems to charge my house batteries only intermittently. No apparent reason when both banks are charging or only the starter battery. My system is wired exactly as in your diagram. The led on the from is on when it should be charging both banks but I see charging voltage only on the starting battery. Thanks for any help you can provide.
