Shrink Plastic and UV Resin Doming

  • I highly suggest you watch AmyMade's Video about shrink plastic • Shrink Plastic for Beg...
    I had an issue with UV Resin popping/peeling off of my Shrink Plastic creations. SO SAD! So I hope this might help you guys IF you have the same problem.
    There's actually bunch of different methods/solutions such as drawing and doming on the rough side of the Shrink Plastic, using embossing powder to dome, or drawing with Posco markers and doming with Epoxy Resin instead. Unfortunately, I don't have any of those materials in my possession and I particularly prefer to draw with permanent marker on the smooth side and color on the rough side for a 3D-ish effect. But if this method is also not for you, I'd highly suggest you check out other people's videos. They've made a lot of great tutorials regarding this subject.
    Anyways, instead of buying/ordering new materials, I experimented with things I had around the house already - ACETONE AND MOD PODGE :D (Suggested by other people) And so that's what I'm using in this video.
    Why does the UV Resin doming peel off? Well, cheap UV Resin tend to shrink when curing, and I'm assuming because the permanent marker side of the Shrink Plastic is so smooth that the UV Resin has nothing to grip onto while shrinking. So as a result, the resin kind of retracts itself and ends up just peeling off. shrugs Just a theory. But yeah, in general, cheap UV Resin does not adhere well to non-porous surfaces.

    Glad I found this video because this is a real issue no one talks about. Unless it only happens to certain brands of resin🤷🏻‍♀️ I was inspired to do additional tests because of your video! I use the cheaper uv resin from amazon and it peels off regardless if it’s on a shiny side or the sanded side. I think resin just doesn’t adhere well to this plastic in general. If I remember correctly, regular 2 part epoxy acts the same way. The modpodge method works great but modpodge can be finicky. I tried the gloss sealer spray and it works great. Super easy, dries fast, and you can seal a bunch of charms at once.

    Resin does not stick to plastic that's why we can use plastic molds when casting resin, what you can do to solve all these issues is to incase your charm inside the resin. Just let it run down the one side when doming and then when you are done with that side flip it over and dome the other side making sure that you connect the resin with the resin on the other side. WALLA a charm that will never come part :) Good luck. I love the voice hahahahhahahah

    • @Tomatoda
      @Tomatoda  Před 4 lety +4

      Yes! Color the charm before baking. :) And as for the back, I think it depends on what you are using. Like chalk pastels would need to be coated and if you used washable markers, you would probably need to coat it as well. Acrylic paint or permanent marker wouldn't need coating on the back. But it doesn't hurt to take the extra step if you can! ^_^

    • @Tomatoda

    Hi! Do you need to add resin or mod podge etc for this craft? Or can it work and still be nice and smooth without it? What if you used colored pencils or sharpies? Because I don’t have any mod podge, resin, nail polish, or anything. But I still really want to make this craft.

    • @Tomatoda
      @Tomatoda  Před 4 lety +1

      for shrink plastic in general, you don't need mod podge or resin or anything! U can just use colored pencils (on the rough side) or sharpie and it'll work perfectly fine. It will be smooth to a certain degree.. it depends on what level of smoothness you are satisfied with I guess. The only reason I use resin and mod podge on top is to make it more durable so the colors don't fade or rub off and sharpie doesn't scratch off overtime :)

      the peeling? it'll happen even without the permanent maker. But I don't recommend drawing with permanent marker on the rough side cuz the ink will seep a bit into the scratches of the roughness. • @Tomatoda
      @Tomatoda  Před 5 lety

      @@farawaymercury YES! I saw it! It looked like you worked on the rough side of the shrink plastic which actually doesnt need any prep. You can directly put UV resin on it with no worries :) But my personal preference, the directions in my sumikko book, and shrink plastic crafts I've seen from other people, sharpie is typically used on the smooth side to get a crisp line and 3d-ish effect and colored on the rough side so the colors can hold on. So this tutorial is to help with doming the permanent marker to make it last. Not necessarily doming the rough colored side since it doesnt always need protection depending on your medium.
      And actually hearing about the pieces curling, I think it might be that you layered the UV Resin on too thick at once? Something similar happened to one of my medium sized resin pieces. I made something with epoxy resin but domed it with Qiao Qiao UV resin and it curled up. Cheap UV Resin shrinks, and when it shrinks, it takes whatever its holding/gripping onto with it. On top of that, it heats up a lot when curing (like you said as well) so your pieces easily bends to the UV Resin's will. Usually, applying and curing several thin layers instead of one thick one will help prevent the curling effect. If not, just stick with padico. Padico doesn't shrink all that much
