- Matech Concepts was a Swiss motorsport team which forged a strong relationship with Ford Racing, initially by distributing the FR500 racing variant of the Mustang in Europe. Their plan was to enter the GT racing scene and develop a race car based on the then-current Ford GT, initially as a GT3 class entry. The GT3 car made its debut in 2007 and showed instant pace claiming the overall FIA GT3 European Team Championship the following season.
Having shown a lot of competence, Matech announced that the team would step up their efforts in order to compete at the highest level of GT racing: the GT1 category. After some uncertainties Ford granted permission for Matech to construct a GT1 variant of the Ford GT supercar. There was a requisite that Ford Racing were to exclusively supply the engines through preferred “works” partner, Roush Yates.
2009 was Matech's first year and it was treated as a development phase. Their program started by modifying two GT3-type chassis to conform to GT1 regulations, fielding these in select races. The actual GT1 car was developed from scratch and unveiled at the beginning of the 2010 season. Displacement of the engine was increased up to 5.3-litre by Roush Yates resulting in around 600hp (restricted) and 640 Nm of torque. Power was transmitted via a six-speed, flat-shift transmission supplied by Xtrac.
For the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship season four cars were built and fielded by two teams: Matech Competition and Marc VDS Racing Team. For the following season, Matech left the series which left Marc VDS running the four cars, two under the Marc VDS Racing Team name and the other two cars under the name of Belgian Racing.
The footage you see up here is from the 2022 Mugello Classic racing weekend by Peter Auto during which one of the only four Ford GT1 ever built was fielded in the Endurance Racing Legends series, which aims to bring together GTs and prototypes from the 1990s and 2000s. The car is now managed by Esprit Competition. The guys were also very kind to allow my friend Italiansupercarvideo and I to put an action camera and a portable audio recorder inside the cockpit of their car during the first practice session of the weekend. The car was driven by Philippe Scemama and by Le Mans winner Éric Hélary (who was behind the wheel during the onboard footage).

I wish they could bring back the GT1 class.
At the beginning of the new wec hypercar era they fooled us with gt1s vibes.
Sadly it wasn't to be
@@VarioFelce I still don't get the logic with that, tease arguably the coolest modern race cars and instead give us lmp1 but worse.
Gt1 was road legal lmp1
I always wanted lmp1 to road legal, you can make a road legal version, just you need working lights, none race steering well sport tires, and aero dynamics to be very good, like better than the fit lmp limit to match
@@kantina4765 Well you can blame Aston Martin for that

A proper sounding race car from the legendary GT1 series. Love seeing the flames from the rear camera as well!

The absolute golden era of motorsport right there
The Marc VDS Ford's are the first team i rooted for in GT racing and is ultimately what got me into gt's. I'll never forget it!
Big thanks for the video. The Matech GT1 is my absolute favorite racing car. The sound is so dreamlike, it's really cool to see the backfire in the rear-view mirror display. I feel at this point the development of how to operate a race car from the driver's perspective should have stopped, e.g. when the driver had even more activities to shift gears, plus no ABS and TK. So I found motorsport even more interesting.
It's wastegate exhaust igniting, not backfiring.

I had a great day today.
Those NFS SHIFT 2 cars in this video made me miss that game again.
Thanks!
Such a shame that Ford didn't back a racing program for this car.
Awesome. I've gotten to see both Robinson Racing Ford GT1's when they were racing in the American Lemans series in the US. R.I.P Christina Robinson, she was a fantastic driver. The 2 cars still show up at the Historic events. Love these cars.
I know this comment is 2 years old and I don't normally reply to comments that old...but I was at Sebring earlier this year for the IGT/SVRA weekend and saw one of the Robertson GTs rolling down the paddock to head to pre-grid for its session. First time seeing it in person and needless to say, I was in love.
Too bad its a wet session
I would love to see it going full tilt, so we can compare it to current GT3 Cars, Laptime to Laptime
I was waiting for this GT1 car in your channel.
Superbes images et super son comme d'hab. Merci !
Congrats Bozzy!! You were given a shoutout by the people of The Race - another CZcams channel I follow! Your non-stop dropping off upper-echelon quality content of test drives, exhaust notes and car walk arounds is astonishing! Keep up the great work

Epic sounds, sexy design and flames! Great video... The Matech Ford GT's were the very best of the best. Nice capture, thanks for sharing. ❤
I miss those FIA GT1 cars from NFS SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED.
GT1 is still around thanks to historic racing series that gained more and more popularity over the years.
Even closed cockpit prototype racing from the 90s like group c and gtp is still going strong today thanks to revival programs like peter auto classics, the rolex monterey reunion and so on.
Great engine sound.

I think it's sounds like an Old race 🏎 Car like Ford gt 40!!! 😍♥
Nice car.
Really nice to read something about the history of this car! It is still one of my favorite GT race cars and I fell in love when I saw it race at the Spa 1000km 2010 edition. Is it true this particular is also attending Le Mans classic this year?
Judging from the entry list, yes there should be this exact one GT1 at Le Mans Classic ;)
Good luck 👍
I have this exact replica model kit to build. It's by Simil'R in 1/24 scale.....it's a really nice kit.
Imagine a GT1 with top brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari, Ford , Porsche , pagani etc with their best cars
4:58 The goddamn flames in the camera. WOW i love it!
Edit: Nvm its not just one flame XD
Éric Hélary, pilote aussi sympa que rapide...👍‼️💯🔥🏁🏎️🤓🇫🇷
You guys seem to know a lot about gt1. What happened to the gt1 class and what was the main difference between gt1 and today’s gt3
Dude first of all even looking at GT1 cars u should be able to tell they look like closed cockpit le mans prototypes.
Or at least most of them do.
They don't look like GT3 cars. They're also obviously a lot faster.
Ford GT GT1 🤩

Well technically it is back in the shape of historic racing.
it will race this summer at spa as well.

Man I miss GT1
You can watch historic racing with GT1 cars.
Peter Auto, Gulf Historic, Monterey Reunion put a few races here on youtube.
they need to add it in gran turismo
Current adoption of GT3 class is just too much. Why can't we have bring back the GT1 class?
I am wondering in comparison with current gt3 cars, which cars are faster?
So I did some digging and the GT3 cars are still slower than the 2000's GT1 cars. I used Road America for the lap time data since its been the most common track they've raced on
2006 ALMS GT1 QUALIFYING: Aston Martin DBR9 Stéphane Sarrazin (F) 1:59.638
2019 GTWC AMERICA GT3 QUALIFYING: Ferrari 488 GT3 R. Ferri Motorsport 2:04.558
I think GT1 has much more power but less aero. So faster on the straights, slower in the corners
Gt1 is gr2 to, fia decided just to make a version of a better gr3, basically none road legal modifications
I think its more track dependent and also depending on the BoP of the particular race series. GT3 should be quicker but on a long track like this then Gt1’s should dominate.
@@augustortiz no, gt1 have a higher top speed, most unless it’s mclaren f1, corvette or bmw depending on model
How does one have a Swiss Motorsport team when the Swiss have a racing ban?
That blue LMP @7:40 aint a Riley & Scott prototype?
More or less 😁That's a Keiler KII WSC. It was built by Kopf Precision Race Products using a Chevron B71 chassis plus a bodywork copied from the Riley & Scott Mk III of those years

Matech? Isnt it the Marc VDS?
Matech built the car.
👍 Класс .
Would be interesting to see what GT1 would look like today if it hadn’t been canned. These cars feel so outdated compared to GT3
These cars are faster in a straight line than GT3 and can follow closer in corners because of the lack of aero compared to modern GT3. Modern GT3 is very close to DTM, which is boring as hell to watch lol. The most exciting formula for fans is low downforce racing. Brings the cars together on track and more closely resembles the passenger car cousins. GT1 > GT3.
2005 LEMANS VM WINNING FORD GT 40 MATECH
Didn't Grosjean do Le Mans in one of these?
I dont know if he did lemans but he has driven a gt1 Ford GT at some point
You were right! He raced in 2010 at lemans and qualified third before crashing at 171 laps according to wiki page
He did & I'm fortunate to own the car.
sorry, but this track is fun For the driver? they engine sound amazing, bu looks like many cornes and a few full throttle straight ahead
V8 GT way better than the wittle v6 version.
Actually, the engine is the same 5.4L modular V8, but without the supercharger,
And this engine was built to last, because they were serviced between 10 to 12.000 miles......
No, the GT1 version uses a Ford Racing 5 liter Cammer engine, since supercharging & turbocharging was not allowed at the time...
@@fontheking5 I checked with the Roush Yates, it's the same engine, because it's required for the cars to have the exact same engine from the road going version....
Therefore, it's the same 5.4L engine from the street version.....
Is this naturally aspirated or supercharged?
Naturally aspirated
5 liter Ford Cammer engine
One and only good Ford vehicle. GT40 family always had the racing in their spirit.
