👍👍👍 .. nice .. and it brought back some memories.
Whilst serving in the SADF (South African Defence Force) from the late 60's into the 80's, we used the RSA version of the '58 Pattern. Very practical kit although, if the Web Belt was not tight around the hips .. the hips then taking a large % of the load, the load was then transferred to the Yolk which tended to make it uncomfortable on the shoulders. This was mostly the case because of the the amount of Ammo and Water that we carried, we were thus forced to make the Web Belt larger than the Waist in order to be able to accommodate the number of Pouches and Water Bottle Holders required.
If required, for extras .. water and food, I carried the little Patrol Pack on my back. Back then, the Plastic Two Litre Coca Cola Bottles were absolutely 'Bomb Proof'. We used to remove the black plastic bottom flat base (it was just spot-glued on) with hot water, leaving the rounded bottom. This made for easier storage in the kit.
Apologies for the diversion .. just felt like sharing it with someone 😊.
One tends to overlook the older gear, thinking that 'newer must be better', which is not always the case .. especially if the older stuff has already been paid for and tends to last.
Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Gid to hear from ye mate..
Yno, I am really enjoying the gear from that time. I found most modern equipment, as light as it is, just doesn't feel hardy.. where as it's impressive how tough and resilient older gear is, and how much you can do with good simple gear. Other than being a wee bit heavier when wet.. I really can't beat it for this environment..
It's gid to hear from someone who has used the gear extensively..
I'm 6'6" and 120kg odd.. it would be handy if the belt was a bit bigger. At least over the jackets. I have yet to find that weight distribution you are talking about. Its wasnt uncomfortable.. but i know it could sit better. Will see what could be done
Do you have any standout kit you could recommend? Especially when it comes to damp environments..
And do ye have any advice for maintaining that rubberised coating?

Great stuff. As a kid and into my teens I used to live in 58 pattern webbing, you simply cannot kill it, if packed correctly it turns into a comfortable chair when you sit down. My only regret is I gave it away.
Glad you are using it for camp outs.

I believe that your gear rig is too low, sitting over your butt. Were you to modify it so that you carry a portion of the load at the upper center of your back, above your hips and put some critical gear - gear that you deem needed quickly such as a medical kit, fire kit, balaclava, folding hat, energy bars, gloves, etc. in a pouch at your chest, I'm confident you could move faster with less fatigue and greater comfort.

    • @conor_finn
      @conor_finn  Před 2 měsíci +1

I agree with what you are saying there bud..
The issue I have is the belt won't wrap around my jackets when I am layered up like that. So the rig will generally need to sit on my jumper layer with jackets on top. So, if I wear the rig too high with this particular set up, the jackets will tend to ride up and become quite uncomfortable.. I am 6'6" and around 120kg, so most things like belts etc are already on the small side and need a bit of customisation, one way or another
As it moves into spring, I'll begin to wear less clothes and definitely lift the webbing for a more suited fit..
I have never owned a chest rig.. but the surplus bits n bobs have caught my interest in the past. Do you have a model yea could recommend?
