That Allegro seat, as in colours and materials and use of existing structure, really shows so much of what Retropower is about.
You very rarely disappoint.
Just superb! 👍
I had a jacket like that in 1975 - there was enough material in just one of the lapels to reupholster both Allegros!
Never miss an episode, never fully understand what your talking about, always find it fascinating. Thank you.
Another exemplary video. Proper engineering, understood, and clearly explained. A demonstration of knowledge and passion all on one. Ta for making my casual browsing through YT a pleasure.
Those seats are just fabulous. Poo brown actually looks chic 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What an outstanding channel! Not only stunning creativity, but such a profound understanding of the fine art of metalwork.
Sunday night ☕️in hand feet finally up best part of the night hope every one is well ! 🙏🏻🏴👍🏻
The allegro upholstery is the Bollocks!😊
Loving Nat's explainer in this one especially - so educational and engaging.
Well done Richard!
I managed to cut the grass while you were explaining all that and got dinner on the way and still caught end of it 😂
I learn SO MUCH from this weekly series. Keep up good work, Nat. I get the sense you second guess yourself at times on these technical tangents. Well, keep at it. Unbelievably informative 👏
A vote for a special on the use of heat in shaping metal
the seats are absolutely GORGEOUS !!
Another bitter sweet video. I really enjoy the explanations of the metal folding. But it also makes me realise there is so much I don’t know 😅
Question for Cal. Off the back of the Allegros and the imminent Saab , can you dip a little more into the background of legalities and pitfalls of floorpan swaps on monocoque shells please?
I'm a "semi skilled" sheety and I haven't been in that line of work for years ..I wasn't a welder but I could be given a drawing and turn a sheet of metal and cut tubes etc into whatever.. it's great to see some of the old machinery and tools are still in use 😎👍
I've been watching for several years now and I have to say that Churchill is my favorite project so far, you've taken classic lines and made them even more beautiful, can't wait to see it finished
Every day is a learning day even if I will never attempt this sort of work again.
wow, such a great description of how to manage heat in metal, really impressive
Love the show especially now that Richard was added. I ran an Autoglass and upholstery shop for 14 years here in Central Florida. Richards individually cut diamonds for the seat inserts came out astonishingly stylish. His craft and quality is EONS from anything we were thinking of in the late 80s until 2000. The TWEED look had just come into fashion for street rods when the business was sold. .. Now it dates a car horribly!
The diamond seats look good… But they are very, very similar to the later Jaguar X Series Sport Premium seats (just a single line of stitching between the diamonds instead of a double).
Really enjoyed that tangent on the effect of heat on metal and using it to your advantage to shape sheet metal.
This week I'm mostly being so impressed by seat refurbishment. Fantastic stuff.
i whould love an outofocus on the heat-shrinking process, i love the tangent parts of the videos ! my favorite
I love Nats tangents 👌🏽
Man, those seats look nice.
Five minutes in and the "quiet" format is so much better. Please explain the origin of the "trolley" on the table next to the finished Allegro seat 48:14
I prefer the noise. It covers my tinnitus from working around a similar amount of noise nicely.
Stunning craftsmanship. Those seats are exquisite. Retro meets contemporary 👌🏻and the quality of the cut, stitch and fit…..🎤 drop. Beautiful to see passion in peoples work and the heart they put into making every detail 100%. I am blown away by you guys. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
The integro’s are gonna look amazing.
Best part of the day.
Richard’s seat upholstering work is utterly beautiful to watch! I honestly believe that investing in people is the very best of all ways to grow for any good specialist company, and that “Quality & Integrity equals longevity” Also, In the longer term, I hope to see some female apprentices as well.
Wow! Those Allegro seats look amazing!
ive been speaking up the alegro to loads of ppl in recent times.. its a gem, ready to be recut to suit a modern eye.
All of that great work and all I can say is.............love that yellow plaid/tartan fabric. Lol
You're bloke's skills are very impressive !
Back in time with the Allegro chairs, if only they were so luxurious back then.
KILLER interior.
The electric gun i use to spot weld pins to pull out dents has a hot shrink tip that puts red hot spots on panels when they "oil can" .
How will you register the Saab/Audi and what will you register it as? Same question for the Allegros too.
Hi thanks for all the great videos, I’d love an insight to how you deal with the dvla procedure mot/sva testing with the more modern engine swaps etc.
I am of the age where I vividly remember the allegro , it was totally pants, however I'm a petrol head/body man, PMSL, I just herd what I said and it can get misunderstood , being a car channel I think I'm safe , as I was saying I would drive a wheel barrow with a v 8 sitting on dubs, seriously what these can achieve here and now is amazing so wish I didn't discover beer🤠😎
The all agro upholstery looks like perfection
Heat shaping pleas. Brilliant vid lads
I hope i haven't missed out on any Capri's being done up ...my favourite car always. It's fun to watch the Allegros take shape ...are these brand new vehicles made from scratch? Sorry I'm new to the channel I'm gonna have my eyes opened bere I think 😮
New Subscriber could watch you allday lol
I’d be interested in the celemix numbers, it was probably me that asked before, out of interest, Townsend engineering in houghton regis used to make cnc bent tubing for automotive manufacturing, not sure if they’d do small batch but might be worth a try.
The primer is selemix 4-0440, the hardener is 9-020 and the thinner is 1-410 👍
Very impressive explanation of metal forming! With the hard a/c lines, will there be provision for insulation to guard against condensation? Cheers😊
Them seats wow !
That interior is fucking class 🔥🔥🔥
Swearing is not class.
why did you shutdown the retropowermarc channel ? it was great fun !
I’d assume they felt it was bringing the company name into disrepute.
We all love Marc to bits but it was not a very good fit in my opinion.
You can't really weld larger structures without a little hot shrinking here and there. Once the welds start pulling and everything goes out of shape, the torch becomes the magic wand that makes it all nice and straight and perpendicular again.
And no matter how often I do it, for some reason I always think it didn't work and then a minute later, when I'm already stressing, the metal starts moving ... ^^.
Absolutely! Never gets any less stressful
Nat stealing the limelight from Cal this week. lol
Big fan of your excellent work and informative an entertaning videos!
Could you please also learn us how to make the drive-by-wire throttle mechanism both at the TBs (with the Jenvey actuatlr) and at the gas pedal with its potentiometer at the Escorts, please? A couple of Nice video sequences woumd be much appriciated.
Thanks again of your excellent, high class and entertaning work - and all the best from DK!
Would be grateful for a Tig “autofocus”. Tips on mild & stainless sheet fab welding, stainless tube & aluminium fab welding. Covering tungsten tip alloy selection, welding rod selection, gas flow & cup choice. Material prep, and any other tips. Cheers 😊
What tweed are you using for the seats? It looks good quality like Harris Tweed, which I’m hoping it is, being from the Isle of Harris myself.
Selemix 2.704.0490/E6.4 ?
Nat can you just go over that metalwork process again, clever stuff.
Excellent episode as usual. Quick note to Bobby, the blue part of the propane flame is unburnt gas and is cold compared to the red part. Hold the torch about 80-100mm away and it will be much much hotter.
The hottest part of a propane/oxygen flame is the tip of the light blue cone within the outer blue section of the flame.
Loving the XJ Coupe content, I managed to bag a pair of Coupe specific New Old Stock tread plates for mine that are in mint condition. For the door seal channels, have you bought those or manufactured them in house?
Allegro seat looks ace.
Honda's do wear the bores and exhaust guides out, its just that they make a 8000+rpm engine that'll do 150,000 miles and still be going, which is bloody hard work to achieve on anything else. If it needs a rebore there are/were some oversize OEM style cast pistons available on ebay US for joke money (120 quid a set or something ridiculous iirc) that ive used a few times. They need the crowns machining down on a lathe to get the compression ratio right but they were suprisingly good quality.
Those Allegro builds are probably high five figures cost. If it needs pistons, they’ll probably get some pretty high spec ones in.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ depends what spec the rest of it is. On a standard-ish tune road engine where you don't need the benefits of forged pistons i'd go cast pistons every time.
Just a question from a fellow automotive shop owner. Cal, I'm wondering how you bill out the hours you put in for final assembly and testing of a project.
I've built a number of project vehicles for customers, and it's always hard to explain that I spent 3 hours tweaking the fit of a component that is working, but just not 100%
would it have been easier and less time consuming to CNC machine the B pillars?
Terry And June .😀 The audacity of even souping up this monstrosity.
Jensen just sitting there behind. the humanity.

Great stuff! I hope your upto speed and done your bit on the dvla call for evidence aka consultation concerning registrations of historic cars, modification, repairs etc. Will affact us all very badly potentially. Everyone who sees / reads this should look into it before the 5 july 2024 deadline before its too late!!! Very serious stuff. See hcva for their approach and further explanation.
Yes I have done this
@@RetropowerNat cool, that makes 2 of us at least! Can't believe the apparent apathy towards this though. Deadline is close of play on 4th July, so before 5th July, or by, but not on 5th July.
Surly this is proof there is nothing that cannot be Retro`d!
Why have a complete car in your clickbait. And no fully car built. Please do not have full car in your clickbait . When there no in the video
First world problems
@@JGG3345 thanks for your response but 13 like think the same
The last thing you can accuse these guys of using is clickbait.
I never thought I would see a picture of an Austin Allegro accused of being clickbait! : )
Trying to sound technical today , aka nerdy speak 😂 Let’s go Marc
Another awesome week. Well done chaps.
Epoxy primer question, what primer do you use on parts of the car when making fabricated sections in the fab shop and how do you apply it?
Kind regards Paul
Selemix 4-0440 zinc rich high build epoxy anti corrosion primer
Why don't you have a cold air intake form the Escort?
What’s happening with the Scimitar?
I have another question, when is a shell too far gone to be used, or is it just a matter of money v availability of better shells/panels? PS. God that Jensen looks great! ❤
Who'll carry on with those E-Type door mechanisms once Bobby's retired in 2041?
Could call it the Allegro Molto.
In the fab shop on cars like the jag, when you’ve replaced the sills, what do you spray on the inside of the sill, if anything, to stop the metal corroding from the inside out?? I know you can waxoyl after painting but before sealing it in, do you spray a zinc rich paint in there??
Yep, selemix 4-0440 zinc rich epoxy high build primer
@@RetropowerNat awsome thanks, i wrote that question at the start and then saw you made reference to the selemix paint. I'm more at the rattle can end of things but its handy to know zinc rich paint isn't a bad idea.
@@NickThornhill there’s some good aerosol stuff out there too. We use a lot of pro XL stuff, their aerosol epoxy 1k seems decent. We haven’t done any anti corrosion tests on it so I can’t put hand on heart, but it seems decent, as does their weld through primer and their etch primer, all of which we use
@@RetropowerNat awsome. Thanks.
I used to make blades guess what heat is really important
18:58 … and that’s where it gets a little challenging … 😳😳 as if the 2-3 minutes before weren’t . I can understand why bug hydraulic presses for car production were invented..
What happened to Jensen CV8?
On your newest project, Please call it the Saaudi.
Is Dry ICE cleaning for the engine not good enough?
Dry ice cleaning doesn't achieve any better finish then you could get from pressure washing an engine. It's good for removing grease and dirt, but hopeless for any sort of surface corrosion.
Exactly this answer! There seems to be a lot of smoke and mirrors with dry ice blasting. I’ve done a fair bit of it. It’s basically similar to jet washing, for a few specific things it’s batter than a wash, for some things it’s worse.
Upholstery is BEAUTIFUL! The Escort's exhaust looks rather small, for such a potent car... looks like a peashooter...ouch. I realize it's not a Mazda, or Subaru, but still.
Just a question. How does Retropowercars fit in with the new EU law, as far as all new cars being made from July 2024 have to have a speed limiter fitted. And there is talk of older cars may have to have a limiter retrofitted. I know you ain't making new cars but was curious where you fall in the Stupid new law
"And there is talk of older cars may have to have a limiter retrofitted"
Let me guess, this "talk" comes from scaremongering tabloid news sources such as the daily mail?
czcams.com/video/5eBT6OSr1TI/video.html
Only relates to new car production. (Not retrospective).
UK not in EU
Not in uk but we have to be hit with eu laws .. there is talks of older cars to be fitted with speed limiters. All cars from July 2024 have a stupid speed limiters that can be overridden by pushing hard on throttle but resets every time the car is turned off . Check Google. Guys
@@EntraVenuS think more “cruises control” - (they are speed limiters of course)..
Having seen the stripped down Audi S4 it dawned on me that I've never seen you guys fit airbags to your builds. Is that because they are not something that is available as an 'aftermarket/off the shelf' product? Are they only available from vehicle manufacturers for their specific vehicles and thus are not possible to fit on bespoke cars like the ones you build?
As soon as you change the structure from the original car ( e.g. cut and shut an S4 and a Saab900) the calibration of the Airbag system goes out the window. With a one-off there is no way to properly calibrate an Airbag system - your not going to make several to crash test. So the issue of how to fit airbags themselves doesn't arise.
Sorry, roll back a bit......I think I might be losing my marbles early, for a minute there it seemed like you said a CF-bodied Austin Allegro....😳😳
Contra heating
like 266 !
Great - until the HORRIBLE music for the seat video!
just make everthing adjustable RE: driving positions
Have you ever Finished a project only to find that something disastrously failed such as body Filler?
Ive never seen them use body filler. I thought they leaded in small amounts. They are the best in the business. All very skilled. The end result is always a masterpiece.
@@russcooke5671 Of course they use body filler all shops do they have to do to get the panels to fit correctly and skin the panels to make them flat
@@danb.3397 but don’t the filler shrink. These cars cost a fortune so I wouldn’t be happy if the filler started shrinking
didnt get one bit off this Austin allegro ,none
Think this video needed a different title
I stand corrected, you made an ugly ugly fell through the ugly tree hitting every branch car.. Look cool. How very annoying!! :) great job seriously
No, no, no. Your trim huy is still not putting the Tartan tweed on those seats properly. The pattern is supposed to run correctly over the tucks. You need to account for the fabric lost into the folds. Look at the back of a well made kilt and you'll see what I mean. Singer also got it wrong for ages, only recently starting to do it properly.
Mat. Far too much detail on how to in the metal shop!
38 mins of Nat...
11 mins of Cal?
C'mon guys, the skip button is nearly worn out 😳
Bloody hell Nat, talk about asking the time & telling us how the watch was made 🙄😳 I know you're passionate about stuff but try to condense it a bit
Sorry!! Did get a bit carried away!! Was aware I was going a bit far and then Jamie said how long my chunk was…… 😊
@RetropowerNat dnt get me wrong I really enjoy your bit usually but a bit far tonight, lol 😆
Love the passion u have for your work but there is a limit, lol 😆
I have wondered whether such in-depth videos negate the need to have unnecessary backwards and forwards with clients
I love how he dives deep into things he's passionate about. Some of us love the metallurgy chat, we could go further and talk about grain structures and how they are affected by the shaping of steel.
@jhenderson999 I get it but sometimes it's just a bit much, lol. Maybe save it for the autofocus 🤔
still rather walk
You did so well this week, took almost 15 minutes until you started both waffling on and repeating yourself over and over again.
Oh goody you painted the all aggro in the original POO POO KAK KAK nappy deposit colour, what a great idea, I'm sorry some people have more money than sense, yes Rerto I know it wasn't your choice.
Very interesting Work going on and you Actually work in an said Millimeters ! , cant stand F,ing Centimeters..The Jag an Mk1 are Gorgous , as was the Seats..Great vid an Sub'd.
