I’m just starting this hobby myself but with it being this time of year and bad weather and not being able to afford the proper equipment right now I’m practicing using wood swords (for stances), blade and sorcery (for fun and trying realistic fighting styles) and when the weather isn’t raining I’m using a machete in the garden with some plastic bottles etc. Since I’m only doing it at home and laws in the UK are awkward with swords I take what I can get but I like this channel because not many people go through the full basics for beginners and when they do they try to make it super fancy and over the top but I like this. Simple, effective and most importantly shows you all you need to know and the attack is on display so you can see it properly executed

Ever since I watched MCD three years ago, I Ive always wanted to know how to sword fight. Even in class a year ago, there was a question about which era Id go to if I had the chance. I literally said midieval because I would love to know how to sword fight. Id just always liked the idea. Now that Im 14, my parents got me what was on my christmas list! A sword! (Tied in first with a grappling hook lol) It wasn't sharp, but I found this as an oppertunity to learn what I've always wanted to learn!

This is late medieval/renaissance German school of longsword fencing. Longsword or “im langen Schwert” in German means not the weapon (as longsword is a modern term) but a fighting style against unarmoured opponents (both hands on the grip). If you are fighting armoured opponents, you would use a style called halfswording or “im Halben Schwert” in German (one hand on the grip, one on the blade).
There are different schools like Italian or in our case the German: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_school_of_fencing

You might look into smallsword and rapier, then. They are by no means easier or lighter weapons (I mean, of course they're lighter, but the positions are more extended and you only have one hand on the weapon, so they become quite heavy after a while) instead of longsword. She uses a smallsword, but from the scene I've seen with Briann of Tarth (sp?) Arya used it like a rapier (smallswords literally cannot cut)

    Few things...
    1. The guy standing as a mannequin for the attack has a good, relaxed Vom Tag. The guy actually demonstrating the cut has low, cocked, and mechanically inferior Vom Tag.
    2. Cutting forward and taking a step - cool. Leaving your back foot at the same place and not even turning it is terrible biomechanics - you basically leave almost half of your body weight and intent behind.
    3. Hitting at neck level is not basic. You should hit the head. It is clear that the guy is not well protected when his sword is so low - if the other guy actually hit him, not just place the sword there, he would most likely kill him with that strike.
    4. Cutting cabbage doesn't actually show anything - you can do those cuts with a blunt sword with a rounded edge and not much effort.

Hi! Short answer: yes. The sword starts the movement, your foot follows.
The long answer: Master Sigmund Ringeck wrote on that topic: „Darum so merck von welcher sÿtten du haust / dz du mitt dem selbigen fuß haw nachfolgest so magstu mitt sterck alle dein stuck gerecht trÿbeñ“.
That means in English (in my own words): "No matter from which side you attack, always follow the stroke with the same foot (here right Oberhau -> right foot). So you will perform your actions with full force."
