Installing Mopar Trailer Hitch Jeep Cherokee KL 2014+

  • This is my experience installing a trailer hitch and bezel on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 4x4 (AD1). I have not done the hitch wiring, this video only covers the hitch install. This process should translate to all 2014+ Cherokees (KL) barring any design changes in future year models. This job is not difficult if a day is set aside for it. I recommend a rotary tool with a cutting wheel for the cutting of the bumper plastic for the bezel install.

Hey I gotta pop back in here and say thank you very much for this video! Just finished installing mine in less than 2.5 hours. Felt great to be confident enough to toss the instructions aside for the most part. There is no possible way I could have done it by those instructions alone. Thank you!
Oh hey I didnt do the wiring either since it'll only be used for a bike rack for now, but you could put in a 7 way/4 pin plug just to cover that hole, thats what I did. Hopkins part 40974. Nice clean look, wiring could always be added later.

I just did this install last night after watching this video. Thank you for taking the time to post this. Took 5 hours from beginning to end. I am not a great fabricator so I really had to take my time cutting.

So would like to first thank you for posting this video. I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited and most of the directions helped, especially removing the molding around the rear wheels. Took me three hours to do the job myself, I wanted to note that there are some differences with the 2019 limited with the new rear styling. There's no longer a hitch bezel to cut out in the bumper; there's now a valance panel that needs to be replaced with the one with an opening for the tow hitch. You’ll need to call a dealer and get the exact part for your trim level and options.
With the valance panel, there are some things to consider
    1) you’ll need to get it painted the body color ($500). I thought about doing the spray painting myself, but you’ll end up paying 200-300 bucks just on paint and materials. So I just got it done by a professional and I was really happy with the results
    3) the limited has the rear motion sensors, so you’ll need to work around the wiring when popping off the old valance panel
    4) the exhaust tips are attached to the valance panel by those darn rivets, so I used wire cutters to clip off the ends on the backside and they popped right off. I found some screws to fit the 1/8’’ holes and they worked quite well.
    5) if you don’t get the tow hitch wiring kit, the hole for it is left open, I had to cover it up with some black plastic material so that rain/water doesn’t get into the new hitch

I was going to get it done at a dealer for 19 Jeep cherokee. Not for 1300 dollars! And that doesn’t even include the painting of the bumper part. The old way of cutting and then putting trim around the hole would cut cost.
Their are no videos for the 2019 if you made a video post it you will get lots of views.
So having no real clue I’m going to pay uhaul 350 bucks for a install. It won’t look great but my trailer won’t mind.
If you post a video of 2019 Jeep cherokee i would do it that way

I'm looking to do this on my wife's 2016 cherokee. I saw on a reddit forum that the cherokee comes prewired for a hitch so you don't need to purchase a wiring harness, just the bumper with hitch receiver and the bezel. Is that correct?

My local Jeep dealer will do the install of this hitch (all cutting, etc.) for $185. Realistically, how long does this process take? if it's more than a few hours, I'm sort of leaning towards just letting them handle it. I haven't pulled the trigger on the hitch yet, but getting ready to. Just trying to figure out if I should have them do it when I order it and pay for it all at once.
Thanks for a great, thorough video. Pretty confident I can do it thanks to your input.
