Until now, the Fiery Furnace was essentially the only hike in Arches National Park that we hadn't done. But now that we're back in Moab, Utah we have a second chance to experience this limited access hike!
A permit - which you must be in person to get at the visitor center - is required to experience the Fiery Furnace and only 75 permits are issued per day. This is both good and bad depending how you look at it. It can be bad since permits are typically all reserved days in advance so some careful planning may be required to secure yours - especially during the busy season. However, it is also good since it makes the Fiery Furnace really the only place in Arches National Park that isn't jam packed with people! And of course this limited access helps to preserve the delicate ecosystem inside the Fiery Furnace.
There is no true path to follow while making your way through this square mile of nearly secluded wilderness, however there are small arrows that mark a way through - although they are very difficult to see! It took us five hours to make our way through, but I could have spent all day in there. We got lost more than once, purposely wandered to dead ends, and explored many side paths for we were in no hurry to finish this solitary adventure - a rare occurrence in such a popular National Park.

Hiked the Furnace last month (2019) and have been looking for a video that captured my experience. For sure, some turned around, "lost," wonderful dead-end moments! Got a later start than this team, so decided best (being solo) to turn back and reverse out. Have been looking for a video that captured my experience. This well produced video has (so far) been the best I have found. Well done!

So, this is what hiking in Utah is about. As A lifelong resident , this is why I stay. This place is filled with adventures like the one you're having. 99% are not in national parks and you don't need permits , but to find many of them you have to some serious "dirt time". probably not practical for someone who is only here for a limited time , but this region is a good one for getting a taste ....

That special soil that looks crusty is called cryptobiotic soil or crust. In the desert the cyanobacteria form the glue that keeps the sand particles together. Everything that you said about preserving these areas is true. Good advice.

Nice videography. That area of UT is our weekend getaway playground. Come jeeping and hiking with us some time. When taking folks on the trails we like to say those multi-pockmark formations are where the ancient saber toothed toads lived and were hunted by giant rockpeckers. 😁 All joshing aside, those formations are called tafoni. We're glad you were respectful of the crypto despite there not being a defined trail to stay on. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, I thought I'd respond by...of the four of you, no one was wearing a watch? I've been wearing one for many decades, so it seemed odd that no one could simply look at their wrist! lol. LOVED, this hike! Not that I've done it, but after seeing this, it's now on my bucket list, as we've been to the Moab region four times now, but with atv's so we could head out many many miles away from Moab itself, to experience as much of the area as possible, as there are trails for many hundreds of miles in all directions, of which we've ridden most of them! But, with Arches being packed, we've always avoided it, other than to just drive in, and see the sights mainly, from the truck. That one very narrow scene where Stacy 'just' made it was cool....and heck, I'm older I'm sure than David's dad, but still would love this type of hike! I've followed your adventure, as well as Thomas and Stacy for a long time, and love both of your video's, so I thank you so much for sharing them with us, as I realize the time and effort to get the footage and editing, thus the appreciation for all you do to get it to us! I realize as well, that you try to make video's as awesome as you can, but the odd one even going through your regular day doing duties and what your thoughts are that day, will suffice from time to time!I I truly really enjoyed this video, and the four of you guys all get along so well, it's so nice to see such a refreshing friendship! Your dinner looked delicious!

The advantage of towing (travel trailer/5th wheel) vs Class A/B/C is that you have access to separate transportation (pickup truck) unless you tow a small jeep/car. Also maintenance, when RV full time it's your home, so if your home is in the shop... Where to sleep?

Hello David and Jenni :) I would like to make a safety suggestion for you guys for your hiking trips. I watched all the videos from you and "I'm Not Lost" for this particular trip. Where you need to communicate with each other, and cell service is not available, consider getting GRMS/FRS walkie talkies. Midland walkie talkies are a good brand to consider (no, I do not work for Midland). Take a look at the X-Talkers. If you don't want to hassle the FCC license, get a FRS version that transmits 2 watts on all the channels except for 8-14. Anything above 2 watts output requires a GMRS license. I would also consider getting a small satellite messenger unit. Much, much cheaper than an actual Sat Phone. Consider units such as the Garmin In-Reach, or the Spot-X. I believe both of these units sync via bluetooth to your smartphones as well for sending messages through the messenger unit with your smartphone (no, I don't work for Garmin or Spot). I will reply on my comment with some helpful links
below. If I can offer any additional help, feel free to contact me by email which you can view on the about section of my CZcams Channel.

Sure is nice seeing you guys enjoying one my favorite places. There is so much to see, but during peak season, its hard to deal with so many people. Sept/Oct was always our favorite time to visit southern Utah. You should run down to the third part of Canyonlands. The maze is a beautiful drive in and many trails to hike. Newspaper Rock is on the road in with some cool Native American art. Wait till you see Valley of the Gods, Moki Dugway, Muley Point, and Monument Valley, south from were you are now.

We are planning a trip to the mighty 5 parks in Utah next summer (Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyon Lands, Capitol Reef). Can you give us your estimate on days required to see each park? Love your channel and appreciate all the information you provide.

Amazing video... what happens if you do get lost in there? Can you always find your way out or does someone know that you're in there to look for you.?

Think of all the things that you seen even though you got "lost".
