People tend to forget about their surroundings. You might block all of your body emitted infrared easily, but you'll still be visible since your surroundings (pavement, field, etc) has different temperature. So in the thermal imager of your enemy you'll be shown as a cold spot on a hotter/colder terrain!

Where does all the heat go then? If its just an insulating fabric the wearer will overheat with time. Otherwise it will imply the use of some venting mechanism that will require active use of energy for distribution, accumulation of and/or transformation to other kinds of energy. In any case the usage of this tech is time-constrained.

The rifle barrel actually cools pretty dang fast, especially after just one shot. I fired four rounds in rapid succession from an AR15, not so hot simple burlap on the barrel would heat or smoke, the burlap masked the signature and the barrel was darn near indistinguishable from ambient in less than a minute. Even just the simplest of cover to obscure the barrel from detection temporarily would work. I own multiple thermal units and put out videos on their capabilities all the time. My most recent was thermal versus Ghillie. Come look. Thermal is difficult to beat but not impossible, even with just standard fabrics.

Thermal protection CAN be defeated by using 3D-XYZ SOBEL edge detection software (look it up!) mated to any FLIR and/or Optical devices and then using LOW-PASS and/or HIGH-PASS convolution filters afterwards to HIGHLIGHT STATIC AND MOVING EDGES which will give away ANY opponents that are using thermal signature reduction technology and methods.
The pixel scintillation produced by object edges is what gives user locations away and THAT is done using fancy edge detection and lo-pass/hi-pass filtering. Not that hard to do anymore! ANYONE can use a smartphone/tablet to input the FLIR video to the SOBEL edge detection/hi-pass/lo-pass imaging software which you can download open source and simply run it real-time using the on-board GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) of any modern smartphone and tablet!
    It's a ZERO-COST solution!
    ...AND...
EVEN IF someone uses Negative Refractive Index Metamaterials (i.e. Hyperstealth/Quantum Stealth) for anti-FLIR coverings, you just need to ACCENTUATE the scintillation produced by object/user edges to find them. You can also dump a bunch of simple flour (i.e. cheap bread flour) in your area of operations to accentuate the DIFFERENCES between hot/cold items/persons and any movement as the fine powder of common bread flour coats said hidden persons/items which ALSO accentuates edges giving rise to common human outlines when those edges are enhanced.

If it looks like a tank, a truck, a person or a big gun, blast away until it's all in tiny pieces!
      ---
If you want to FIND hidden people and guns who are covered with fancy stealth coverings, pour some bags of flour over the entire area so giant clouds of dusty flour fall everywhere. Then light it all up with flame throwers or firebombs and watch the dust explosion uncover all the stealthed gear and persons. Blast away until all the now-uncovered gear and persons are all in tiny pieces!

I don't see that being applied in the field until you have a FLIR system where its basically a setting on the device. Grunts aren't going to do all that. Also you need smartphone to use it, which will give away your position. So, nope. Might be an option for automated killing machines however.

    • @StarGateSG7
      @StarGateSG7 Před 2 lety +2

@@huwhitecavebeast1972 Combat laptops, tablets and smartphone devices with tactical spread-spectrum and/or frequency hopping radios such as Getac or Raytheon/Itronix (or whoever they are now!) are already TEMPEST-rated (i.e. no detectable intrinsic radio or electrical emissions) so adding SOBEL/Canny edge detection is a five minute software upgrade to the imaging portion of the device!
Even your NVG's (ITT or AVN) can be upgraded in less than a few minutes with SOBEL/CANNY edge detection if they use even the cheapest ARM processor or Texas Instruments DSP chip.
I think DEVGRU or SOF-1D (i.e. SpecOps) FINALLY after all these years uses SOBEL and CANNY edge-detection on their wide-field-of-view FUSION NVG goggles which combine optical/starlight enhancement and multi-band Thermal Nightvision imaging.
I put it on my own rugged phones in a 3D printed goggles-casing and I got FULL nightvision in a combined IR and Optical bands all for less than the cost of the phone itself and my 3D print (i.e. less than $50 USD)
Instead of playing $5000+ for AVN NVGs I got BETTER nightvision performance with my fused-together SOEBL/CANNY Edge Detection + Luminance/Contrast/Shadow/Highlights enhancement + RGB and HSL colour correction using my custom code which works on ANY smartphone for less than $50 bucks for the 3D printed goggle-case that your smartphone goes into and straps to your head! And since I can put a cheap Acrylic plastic 2.5:1 Anamorphic lens which passes through IR and UV light, I can see an ultra-wide field of view in full multi-spectral glory!
My system WAAAAAY outperforms even $5000+ Starlight NVG Systems --- heck it even outperforms those $48,000 Navy SEAL wide-field-of-view goggles!

You can, and I would say its 90% effective. Look up IR cloak in the search bar. Oathkeepers and SnakeBite Tactical made a thermal evasion cloak. It hides heat signature even when close without vegetation infront of you. It works as a ghillie suit along with thermal coverage. Only problem is when moving, it would look like the ground is moving or if a tree hotter than your suit is blocked suddenly. Either way, look it up.

Night vision, which is different than thermal, was rolled out first by the Germans but we built upon it in the 40’s and 50’s. A Russian immigrated to the US and held the 1st US patent. RCA and the Army finished development here.
