How to Shade Polymer Clay Cakes and Desserts

  • Hi everyone! Watch in HD :)
    In today's polymer clay tutorial, I show you how I shade my polymer clay cakes and desserts using chalk/soft pastels which are an art medium. This isn't necessarily the correct or best way to do it, but I always receive a lot of questions about how I create my shading powder so I thought it would be good to make a video for everyone to see! :)
    Thanks for watching!

    Hey awesome job! Do you know if you can apply the pastel dust to your sculpture once it is baked? Or does it need to be when the clay is unbaked, because I have a pice that I made in multiple firings that I was going to finish with chalk pastel but wasn't sure if it would adhere. Thanks!

    I honestly did not know I could mix pastel shades and it would work! I just figured it would just mash the colors together. I like the ones I have, but feel they don't work as well with TLS to make lighter frosting colors and such. Guess I just gotta play with it some more! Thank you for this video, really taught me something!!!

    Do you use your pastels before or after you bake? It seems like all of my polymer clay really darkens during baking so I'm unsure how that would affect the pastels. I have one of my projects as my icon....any suggestions or ideas on how I can use the pastels for shading on the darker colors?

    • @Meg_of_all_threads
      @Meg_of_all_threads Před 8 lety +3

      You use it before so it will stick to it. If you need to add color after it's baked, use acrylic paint but don't forget the glaze so the paint won't rub off.

    Does anyone have an idea why my pastels aren't sticking to my clay nearly as good as they should be? It looks like they are very easy to apply but, I have to shave heavy amounts onto my clay and it winds up looking streaky rather than soft and fading. Not only that, but after shading my clay breaks!
    I use $10.00 soft pastels found at Walmart, Scuply clay, and a pretty thin brush (in width not density).

      Shanitta Thompson,
      Ok, I'll try that. Right now I am using eyeshadow, but that doesn't make my buisness feel up-to-par when selling (even though they're perfect for shading in every way). It also is kind of strange for a guy to get eyeshadow for Christmas [lol], but I might try to invest in a better pastel set to see if that would work.
