- Hi everyone! Watch in HD :)
In today's polymer clay tutorial, I show you how I shade my polymer clay cakes and desserts using chalk/soft pastels which are an art medium. This isn't necessarily the correct or best way to do it, but I always receive a lot of questions about how I create my shading powder so I thought it would be good to make a video for everyone to see! :)
Thanks for watching!

so satisfying
Thank you so much for this video!!!!!
Hey awesome job! Do you know if you can apply the pastel dust to your sculpture once it is baked? Or does it need to be when the clay is unbaked, because I have a pice that I made in multiple firings that I was going to finish with chalk pastel but wasn't sure if it would adhere. Thanks!
Hey! Can this same effect be done on previously baked clay?
Great video !!!
Fantastic video
very helpful.. Thanks
Thanks for the advice
Hello 👋 thanks you for this tutorial. Can you tell me please : is this necessary to do it before
Baking or it doesn’t matter ? Thanks you 😃
Is there a difference between pastels and oil pastels? And if there is will they both work in polymer clay?
you do this before or after baking?
Very useful 😄💖
If you put pastel chalk on before you bake then won’t that affect the sanding process as well?
this is sooooo helpful thankyou!
+Cupcakeclaydelights Glad you found it helpful!
can i use oil pastels?
Could I use plastic crayons for this? Or would chalk pastels be the go to item?
My sister Tina recommend your channel 😄
idk if u will reply because this is a old video , but i just orderd pastel vanilla fimo effect , is that the same as in this vidoe , also i thought that clay was the best shade for food , but now i realised its not , so can i shade with eyeshadow
All i can get is crayola outdoor chalk.. should that work the same??
Can i use oil pastel for shading??
Can i use soft pastle?
I wanna shade clay as well!
Will this be permanent? Before or after baking?
whoa coool 😊
I honestly did not know I could mix pastel shades and it would work! I just figured it would just mash the colors together. I like the ones I have, but feel they don't work as well with TLS to make lighter frosting colors and such. Guess I just gotta play with it some more! Thank you for this video, really taught me something!!!
+Nicole Clements Thank you! And have you tried mixing some white pastel powder into your TLS mixture to help lighten the colour? That should help get more lighter shades :D
Creative Rachy I have not, but I will now!! Thanks for the tip!!! :D
Omg I have the same chalk pastel as you
Hard or soft pastels? And best brand?
What do you use to bake your charms? And what glaze do you recommend?
+Creative Rachy thanks!! :)
Which type of mold do you use for ur cupcakes ? They r so cute !
+Jenny Lin A 14mm :)
Can you use oil pastels or regular chalk?P.S. I love your channel!!😄
From experience, oil pastel will not work, but chalk will (but comes off a lot easier)
what is chalk pastel is?
I like this set i got at michaels on clearance
Do you use your pastels before or after you bake? It seems like all of my polymer clay really darkens during baking so I'm unsure how that would affect the pastels. I have one of my projects as my icon....any suggestions or ideas on how I can use the pastels for shading on the darker colors?
You use it before so it will stick to it. If you need to add color after it's baked, use acrylic paint but don't forget the glaze so the paint won't rub off.
maby make a lighter shade of pastel powder or just shade really lightly on the cham hope this helped (:
hello Creative Rachy How are you? Do you need to shade them before or after cook them?
Good morning☀️Before I read from Rachy. 🤗🐻🌸
Do you shade before or after baking??
That’s what I’ve been wondering but nobody has answered 😭😭💀
This was an adhd project of mine and i thought you were supposed to shade after I was so frustrated when all the color wasn’t sticking I literally was hyperfocusing on getting the color the stick rather (I literally baked one) I’m so excited I can do it actually right!
I saw your other polymer clay tips video 🤩
The second pastels are the pastels I have
You can also use sisscors to
+Laura Campelj Yes, good suggestion :D
I just have the 12 colour set, and my yellow is too bright :'v
When can you shade clay? Before or after baking?
Both, but it is easier before baking because the pigment sticks to the clay better :)
@@creativerachy Ok, thanks.
Is it okay to put glaze over chalk pastels?
Toast Jesus yes, that's how you seal it in :)
Hey Rachel! Do you have a tip to have no dirt or dust on y clay? Because even if I am super carefull u always manage to get my clay dirty π_π ̄ 3 ̄
+Sarah-luz salvador I'll be making a video on it :)
+Creative Rachy Yay thank you soooooooo much 😄😄
kisses from Paris 😙😙
So , does pastel make any harm to the creation when baking ?
No not at all!
Oh , thank you for responding Rachy , I am a big fan :)
LPS Dyana Haha :-)
Can u do with makeup
Does anyone have an idea why my pastels aren't sticking to my clay nearly as good as they should be? It looks like they are very easy to apply but, I have to shave heavy amounts onto my clay and it winds up looking streaky rather than soft and fading. Not only that, but after shading my clay breaks!
I use $10.00 soft pastels found at Walmart, Scuply clay, and a pretty thin brush (in width not density).
Dylan C.Take a nail file and file the color a little. You can also use eyeshadow from the dollar store.
Shanitta Thompson,
Ok, I'll try that. Right now I am using eyeshadow, but that doesn't make my buisness feel up-to-par when selling (even though they're perfect for shading in every way). It also is kind of strange for a guy to get eyeshadow for Christmas [lol], but I might try to invest in a better pastel set to see if that would work.
Dylan C. Take a look a Pan Pastels! They are sweet!
Shanitta Thompson,
Okay, I'll do that! Thanks for your help!
Do you shade it before or after baking your peace
You can do either- I mainly do it before :)
Creative Rachy ok thx I just got chalk pastel and I've been doing clay for about 5 years but I'm way bad
Can you use normal pastels?
Fizzyfruit Yes. I use matte eyeshadow
Could you use old eyeshadows instead ?
+Chispa Yes you can! Any kind of pigments will work :)
@@creativerachy God bless you dear and all. 💗Thank you so much.!!!😘💗💗💗💗💗💗I wish you the best to you and to all. You are such a lovely person and you are helping us so much❤️Thank you for everything 🤗🥰💗🌷🐻Have a very nice day , enjoy the moments with lots of love and happiness🌟🌈🌷🌸✨😘
Can you use soft pastels to replace chalk pastels?
Does anyone know if it will effect anything?
They are the same thing! Just a different name :)
Do you shade ye clay before or after baking?
I do it before :)
Thx! This really helped me! I'm binka78 on insta and u told me to use eye shadow and it really helped thank you!
+Bianca Fortuno Great! I'm glad I was able to help out :D
how did you make your logo
+Priti Rane I just drew it :)
do you bake it with the clay??
Yes I do :)
Creative Rachy thanks ^-^
Where do you buy the Pastels
You can get them from craft or art stores :)
Creative Rachy thanks I found it
I’m using this for a dog sculpture I’m giving my grandma! Thanks
So that’s my problem. I was using oil pastels and I been getting frustrated
Were can you get those little containers?
Anna Evans you can usually go online and find them on like amazon! I believe those are eye shadow containers!
Soft pastels is another name for chalk pastels 😊
Nikki Piggott no they are different. There are soft pastels, oil pastels, and chalk pastels. Soft pastels are like oil pastels except they don't blend like oils and are dry instead of oily but not chalky.
PROTIP!
sorry, I had to do that XD

Thanks, I love all of your videos and creations, but I cringe a little every time I hear you say to use an "old" toothbrush!
When I say old toothbrush, I mean one that you are not also currently using for your teeth! Believe me, some people would so I have to clarify it 😂
Thumbs up for fake false tan that's my best friend (was my best friend)
