This drama has left me feeling so vulnerable with emotions I had to take leave from work to recover. I watched this drama because I like PBG. His role and the heartwarming and nostalgic story made me experience the intense emotions I thought I’ve lost decades ago. (I grew up in the 90s). I wonder if anyone feels this way.

덕선이가 택이를 챙기는 장면이 계속 나온것도 택이는 덕선이에게 무의식중에서 항상 신경쓰이는 존재이고 항상 자신을 깎아내리고 모든 일에 자신없어하는 덕선이가 자신이 누군가에게 필요하고 가치있는 존재라는걸 깨닫게 해주기 위해 넣었다고생각. 택이는 덕선이의 결핍을 채워줬고 필요한 순간마다 함께 있었기 때문에 어떤 상황이 닥치더라도 돌고돌아 둘은 반드시 이어졌을것임

Duk Seon discovered her feelings for Taek without the pressure from her friends. For Sun Woo and Jung Hwan, she might have been pressured or confused such that she developed some sort of infatuation. But, for Taek, Duk Seon's feelings developed within her. That's when I knew her feelings for him was real and unconditional. ❤
As someone who watched all three seasons of the Reply series what bugged me the most was that-while I was happy DeokSun ended up with Taek-I initially felt like it was because the decision was made for her. The other female leads were properly confessed to by all interested parties and they had the chance to search their feelings and make a choice. I thought that because JungHwan never properly confessed then she wasn’t able to make a fair choice or have a choice at all between the two of them. But reading your comment and thinking about what DongRyong said I realized that his point still stands, if not more strongly. JH or Taek’s feeling shouldn’t influence her decision because at the end of the day it’s about who she likes and what she wants. I’m glad who she liked and what she wanted was Taek. And it was 100% her choice⭐️
And Taek is the first person that made her chose friendship over crush. She didnt want to be awkward with Taek eventhough she seemed to like Taek after she moved on from Jung Pal in 1988/1989. Her treatment towards Taek was totally different than hers towards Sun Woo and Jung Pal. I like how it became a clean slate for the three of them in 1994, since 1988/89 Jung Pal, Taek, and Deok Sun all chose friendship over love. And fortunately, 1994 Taek was getting braver and our 1994 Deok sun was getting more clear about her own feelings🥰 I feel really sad for Jung Pal, though. I lowkey still kinda wished it were him who came first to the concert

Her first two crushes were cause of peer pressure, she thought that she liked them because her friends said that they liked her so her choice and her feeling we're not there which is why you could see that she got over them easily. rather than her liking them it was more about being liked my someone and that feeling that she fell for, as for teak she the way she liked him was natural and you can almost see that she grew up through that emotion because for the first time she chose friendship over all and that shows the importance and the presence of him in her life
Actually this series told us the differences between love and crush. Crush happens fast and it feels like a roller-coaster when you see them. But love grows slowly and it feels comfortable.
우린 시청자였으니 정환이 입장을 다 알고 있어서 츤데레ㅠㅠ굉굉 하고 어남류를 밀었던거지 덕선이 입장에선 정환이는ㅇ정말 남사친 그 위도 아래도 아니었음.. 잠깐 친구들이 떠봤을 땐 덕선이도 정환이 신경썼었는데 정환이가ㅇ데레데레 없이 츤츤만 보여줘서 관계 물로가고ㅠㅠ당시 남편 택이인거 밝혀졌을 때 작가가 사람들이 하도 류준열만 밀어서 반전 노리고ㅇ택이로 길바꿈 한거 아니냐는 말 많이 돌았었는데 이렇게 모은거 보니 작가님은 첨부터 택이를 남편으로 뒀다는게 느껴지네요 그나저나 벌써 3년이냐 따흑ㅠㅠ

I specifically love how when Taek first asked Deok-sun out, he changed it from a question "Shall we go see a movie?" to a statement "Let's go see a movie". Even so early on, he has been firm with his decisions when it comes to Deok-sun 😭💙
They also hint that dokseon and taek kept going to the cinema together even over the years. Remember the scene when the neighborhood sees the newspapers of them on a date and I think dokseon's mom implies that they go to the cinema all the time. They both kept a close relationship over the years.

I always thought that it was implied that the change was due to JungHwan’s wish. JH wished during the meteor shower for Taek to become a jerk because he felt betrayed when he discovered that Taek smoked but never told anyone. On top of that JH and Taek liked the same girl, so in a moment of weakness JH wished ill on his friend. Apparently it sort of came true in the future and that’s the joke.
You know what I like about Dukseon and Taek is that neither of them changed themselves for the other. With sunwoo, dukseon changed herself and with Junghwan, she changed herself. Both relationships with those two because quite awkward and unwieldy. Taek and Dukseon didn't change their personalities for each other and accepted each other completely how they were. This, they're relationship grew quite naturally
Thats because duk seon is matured enough. You can see how matured duk seon was from time to time esp when she entered the adult life. She liked sunwoo and junghwan when she was in her teen life but not for taek. She realized her feeling for taek when she was adult and she acted like adult.
@@belllievewalwalforever3215 I think DS always lowkey loved Taek but didn't know to express it/sometimes didn't know it herself. As a teen every time he looked at her for a second too long or came too close her heart would stop...that's gotta mean that she didn't see Taek entirely platonically. She even stayed by his side in his room after he told her to go home (almost right after DR told her to focus on who she likes and not who likes her for once), just because she wanted to be around him. It wasn't as easy as to treat him like a quick crush the way she treated the other boys, with Taek it was always more scary to cross the line because what she felt for him was deeper. I agree with you that older DS had it all figured out when Taek made the move, she was way mature about how to let him into her life.

I know that Taekie is the hubby since the beginning... Deoksun always choose Taekie over everyone else since childhood. She is always their for him whenever he needs someone. She always take care of him. And Taek always adore her... He lets her do anything to him without complaining. He loves everything that she do and always gave her everything that she wants...
watched this drama when i was 16 or 17 and im really rooting for junghwan, but now that im rewatching it (i'm 19 now btw), i can see why deokseon chooses taek. In relationships, honesty and timing really plays a big role in love.
True, this drama came out when i was 16. Now that I am 21, I am pretty sure if i watched it when I was 16 I must be upset that she didnt end up with Jung Pal
If I watched this during my immature teenage years, I would’ve chosen Junghwan, too. The cold, tsundere type really amazes me before, they secretly care for you. But as you age, you realize the value of expressing your feelings out loud, the consistent care, the one who never hesitate. Great ending, wished they show more of deoksun-teak ending :
Then in your thirties and forties when you get on with serious life you realise that you need someone who has a stong moral compass and does sacrifices for you and looks out for you the way JP does. Someone who balances the expectations of a family and their personal goals and having the courage to live life with regrets and lost opportunities.
Jung Hwan takes over his mother. She was almost never tender to her husband. I guess Jungpal never learned how to convey his feelings, well and like any teenager he feared rejection. I read in other comments that definitely Taek was a great player, he knew when to seize his day.
cannot agree with you more. children are affected alot by their parents' behaviour. Junghwan is cold outside but warm inside just like his mom, doesnt know how to express his feeling much. I feel the same since our family members do not show our love to each other, we consider it kind of weird and cringy. That s why I am also kind of cold towards people that love me and do not know how to express my love properly
@@lyhoang7421 remember when his mother went to his room to talk more and by coincidence she found out he did excellent in the exams and was number one. Her face was of surprise and disappointment of how wouldn't her son celebrate those moments with her. On the other hand, I think that also having a handicapped brother diverting all the attention was a factor.
It's truly sad that duk seon didn't end up with jung hwan since I've rooted for the both of them since the beginning. However, her-- ending up with choi taek is just too cute. The way taek smiles like a puppy whenever he sees duk seon is just so cute and heart-fluttering. I'm more than satisfied that they ended up together. I mean, who wouldn't fall for taek's child-like innocence and cuteness 💙
if you didn't root for anyone and just simply follow the current you'll know that Taek always doing the most and Jungpal always doubting his feelings. JP had all the chances but still didn't do shit for her i was disappointed in him lol. Taek who barely gotten any rest and time with the gang was always one step forward JP like sacrificing his match. I mean jungpal literally lived CLOSEST to her and then what. Then again i think he values his friendship over his feelings towards DS anyways.
As this drama was based on the real-life story, the writer cant change the plot of it. The only part they did was getting back Jung Hwan during Duk Seon's sister wedding, as we know that the original character was killed in the aircraft training before the wedding. But this drama was superb. From the casts to the sets, everything was great. It brings me back to 88 -90s era which i miss the most now.

I searched who'll be the husband first before watching it so I can avoid the second lead syndrome but my heart aches for junghwan, although I am actually team taek, I still feel so frustrated with junghwan, the confession scene scarred me so much. I think the problem is they didn't build up taek and deoksun's relationship earlier (though I really adore their couple scenes near the end), and also because they didn't give us a proper closure for junghwan's feeling although I've seen a lot of comments saying that him leaving the ring at the restaurant is the sign that he's really leaving his feelings behind, still It will be really nice if we knew what happened to him, did he get a new girl? or whatever. But really, watching this for the 5th time made me realize that deoksun really like taek she just didn't know because she's so focused about thinking how she will receive sunwoo's and jungpal's love when she learned about their feelings. With taek it is different, she was the one who discovered her feelings for him. This is why her scene with dongryong is significant, remember when dongryong said something about knowing her real feelings. Anyways this drama still haunts me, I'll probably watch this even when I'm 60 lol
you know what, i almost searched up who her husband is, and glad I didn't. I keep guessing who will she marry I even guess "will it be dongryong? no it can't be.. but the way future husband talk and behave it can't be taek..." lol i am team taek also and VERY HAPPY that she married taek. I squeal like a girl when it's taek who came to the concert with deokseon instead of jungpal and that's when I'm sure she will marry taek. i shipped jungpal and deokseon in earlier episodes but jungpal became suffocating later on with his feeling I don't know why. i just finished this drama the first time yesterday and i don't know why I'm telling you this lol because all of my friends doesn't talk much about this or just because this drama was from a long time ago and your comment just from 1 day ago.
Wow, I felt exactly the same when I finished this last March, also thank you for sharing your thoughts I really understand the feeling of wanting to talk about this really amazing kdrama I don't have anyone to talk to either because my friends watched this years ago and I just discovered it this year. I just can't move on from this kdrama and felt the need to express my sentiments so even though most of the comments here are Korean and I actually thought no one would notice this, I wrote this long comment with the hopes that I can finally get over the series lol
Also, I think you're the first person that I can finally relate to, lol when I talked to my friends before I watched this kdrama they told me not to watch it (because they knew I don't like kdrama that has a second lead syndrome) I was pretty afraid at first, hence why I searched for the husband first. But really I feel bad for junghwan and shipped him to deoksun at first but not all the way, my friends are team jungpal even after this years, and they don't understand why I became team taek afterwards.

@@muhsinafathima8723 its fine you can share your sentiments however long it is, I too haven't watched the other reply series because I still cant get over with reply 1988, instead Im rewatching reply 1988, hospital playlist, and prisoners playbook these days as they have the same feels. Although i heard that the other reply series are also super amazing especially the 1997. My friends adviced me to avoid 1994 while im still healing from 1988 because the seond lead syndrome there was pretty strong too
I love this drama's main character roles of deokseon n taek it shows reality how actually partner r in real life not necessary they should b perfect or beautiful what actually needed is caring for each other. only I feel incomplete in this drama is their wedding scene.
When I tell people that I liked Junghwan but I've always rooted for Choi Taek, they ask me why not Junghwan. I just tell them that it's probably because of the simple fact that Taek was much more honest and expressive with his feelings for Deoksun, and Junghwan wasn't. It pays to be open about your feelings if you want a chance with that special someone...
Camille Exactly. I rooted for Taek from the beginning. I like his attitude towards Deok Sun because I personally think that's how people should be in real life. Plus, Taek left an important match in his career just to go to Deok Sun who was alone when her date didn't show up, meanwhile Junghwan hesitated before going to her. So I really think that Taek deserves Deok Sun more.
Srushti Bhingi Hwan was great as a male friend but he wasted too many opportunities to get Deok Sun's heart. I wished there was actually competition between him and Taek.. but nah, he was too passive.. I feel like he should've been vocal about his feelings, Deok Sun wasn't his "the one that got away".. I honestly felt like he did so little to keep her.

there's one time in our life when someone likes us and we thought we like them too. But it turns out, we were just too in love with the word "in love" just like what happened to deoksun with sunwoo and jung hwan
7:56 이 장면이 괜히 있는게 아니라고 생각함. 드라마에서 이런 씬을 아무 의미없이 넣진 않죠. 그리고 이게 정말 꿈이었다면 ‘택이는 덕선이가 꿈에 나올만큼 덕선이를 너무 좋아한다’ 라는 걸 보여줄 수 있는 장면이나 효과를 줬을텐데 헷갈리게 한 것을 보면 꿈이 아니라는 걸 유추할 수 있게끔 한거라고 생각함.
Even if Junghwan and Deoksun got together they would eventually tire each other out with the bickering and the romance would eventually fizzle. He's too brusque for someone as emotionally sensitive like Deoksun and she's too goofy for someone as socially conscious as Junghwan. She exasperates and embarrasses him, while he is too good at offending her and provoking her anger. Junghwan might love Deoksun but he will find it difficult to respect her on an intellectual level (like his more serious-natured mother looks down on her goofy playful husband). Deoksun already has emotional baggage from her childhood that has her questioning her worthiness to being loved and this will only worsen her fear of being inadequate. Will this fear induce her to tone down her natural exuberance and hold back her true opinions in order to avoid conflict in their relationship if they become couple? She is already conditioned to be a matyr from childhood due to the dynamics of her family. Or will Junghwan be the one to swallow his irritation to keep peace? Whether it be Deoksun or Junghwan or both, holding back will only lead to supressed resentment. Or will they continue as they are, neither yielding to the other? Neither situation would be healthy. There was a very telling scene about how Deoksun felt about Junghwan and Taek. Even when she was at the height of her crush for Junghwan and violently jostled her brother out of the way to sit next to him, she still jumped up to deliver Taek's food without hesitation when asked to. She then stayed with Taek even when she was annoyed with his demands and seemed to forget all about getting back to Junghwan. It was a shallow crush that was bound to fade as quick as it appeared - as seen by her fast switch to disinterest towards Junghwan the instant Taek piqued her romantic interest. As with both Sunwoo and Junghwan, Deoksun was merely in love with the idea of being loved and wanted. Stems from her childhood feelings of neglect. She is prone to putting other's needs before hers. It didn't matter what she wanted, only mattered that she believed they wanted her. She jumped in without precaution as her true heart was safe from them and so she could be careless. With Taek, it was her own vulnerable heart speaking, and so she treaded more carefully with him and was shy and tentative rather than openly and aggressively flirtatious. With Sunwoo and Junghwan, her hurt feelings were short-lived and gone without much residue awkwardness. But she was very careful with Taek because he held tremendous power to hurt her deeply, so deeply that she knew their friendship might never be the same again should it happen. And her fear of this was a huge factor in why she didn't want to proceed from friends to lovers until she was absolutely sure of his feelings. Unlike with Sunwoo and Junghwan, Taek's affectionate friendship was her place of comfort, her emotional refuge. She had to know where they stood before she took the risk lest it be ruined if she was once again mistaken. It was clear that she was more emotionally invested in Taek. With Taek, she never hesitated to prioritise him. With Junghwan, she forgets all about him when Taek is in the picture. She picks Taek every time. Junghwan gave her the exact pink gloves she desperately wanted, and yet she picks Taek's pink mittens to wear. She was quick to forgive Taek when he angers her because she had complete unquestioning trust that he harboured no deliberate intentions to cause her hurt, but she would go toe to toe with guns blazing when it came to Junghwan. Their relationship would be volatile, each unwilling to compromise with each other or take the time to clear up grievances as evident in the pink-shirt incident. There were also many comparable scenes showcasing Junghwan's and Taek's reaction to Deoksun in similar scenarios. For example when Deoksun realised her mistaken presumption over Sunwoo's feelings, Junghwan laughed at her folly and felt relieved for himself. He failed to symphathise with her hurt. When Taek read her diary note, he seemed thoughtful and concerned. Taek went on to extract a little friendly revenge out on Sunwoo for Deoksun's hurt feelings. Continuing the comparison, Junghwan always reacts with either irritation, secrecy or hesitation while Taek reacts swiftly and openly with affection and support. Where practical and pragmatic Junghwan would dismiss her anguish as a dramatic over-reaction to a trivial matter, Taek would respond with unconditional comfort. And because of this, Deoksun was also more trusting of Taek, allowing him to see her vulnerable soft inner-self that she protects with a feisty hardened outer shell. All Junghwan was privy to see was her tough exterior because she was always on the defensive with him. Looking over her interactions with Taek, it's reasonable to surmise that Doeksun loved Taek even before she could even recognize it. She was expecting the love with the fireworks like in the romance novels that she reads. It took her some time to realise that love can be the calm devotion that came from deep-rooted attachments born from a positive emotional connection with another person. Those attachments are evident in how she combs over Taek's actions, truly wanting to know where she stands in his life. All those sleepless nights. His actions affected her most deeply. The China trip was a huge turning point for Deoksun's and Taek's relationship. Taek's helplessness and gentle and amiable disposition back home gave him an aura of perpetual child-like innocence that had obscured his progression into manhood. For the first time Deoksun got a glimpse of an authoritative and steely-minded Taek with a cigarette in hand who commanded an imposing presence amongst adults in the (now evident to her) very serious and very adult world of competitive baduk. Before this, the news media's grandiose descriptions of Taek had been laughable and inconceivable to her, but now she finally saw for herself the glacial stone-faced "baduk-god" in his element. That was when her image of him as a soft and incapable little boy obsessed with a mere board-game started to crack. Taek's transition from boy to man in Deoksun's perception of him was a monumental revelation to her. I believe his transformation came to a full completion in Deoksun's mind in the scene where he scoops her up and carries her across the field, just like a hero out of her romance novels. This "new" Taek surprised and intrigued her and she was smitten. You can see it in the soft way she looks at him in the alleyway scene and how hesitant she was to part from him that same night. Seeing him as a full-fledged man was a catalyst that allowed her love for Taek to tip-toe into romantic territory. However, as she became aware of this shift, she not only found herself at the forefront of a new frontier but she had also lost the confidence in her own ability to gauge the situation because of her past mistakes regarding Sunwoo and Junghwan. No way was she going to risk her relationship with Taek on an unknown factor, which is - does he reciprocate her feelings With Taek, she wanted to know for sure how he feels about her because their bond was too precious to take a gamble on. She wanted a direct sign from him. She wasn't going to take their first kiss as concrete evidence as he was drugged out and half-asleep. Her nervousness made her let him think it was a dream, but she gave him a chance to make a move by asking him what his "dream" was about. This is where Taek has to own half of the blame when he said he was relieved that it was a dream and said it was "nothing" when she pressed him further. Taek blew his chance there. At the time, he knew what he wanted but was primarily concerned about how it would affect Junghwan. All three became caught up in a "who will make the first move" standoff. Junghwan being his hesitant self and not wanting to hurt Taek or compromise his pride by admitting his feelings to Deoksun, Taek not wanting to hurt Junghwan just to clue Deoksun in on his romantic interest, and Deoksun not wanting to be wrong again because this time it really mattered. The ball finally started to roll again after Taek forfeited his match to show up at the concert. Her feelings had been quietly simmering for all those years while she was low-key waiting for a clearer sign from him. Taek choosing her over baduk was the sign that she needed. She allowed her romantic feelings for him to re-ignite as she was finally hopeful that his feelings for her ran deeper than she had thought. You can see the changes in her behaviour after the concert. She reverted back to her shy demeanor, full of romantic curiosity for Taek, as she mentally prepared herself to fully grasp the moment should it present itself again. Fortunately, this time she had maturity and a new bolstered sense of emotional bravery that allowed her to take a leap of faith in Taek's hotel room when that opportunity appeared. The most telling scene that illustrated clearly that Taek and Deoksun are the most suited to each other was during their first kiss. Their bodies resembled the Yin-yang symbol - two halves of a whole. They celebrate each other's strengths and make up for each other's weaknesses - a perfect match. There was so much symbolism scattered throughout, from fish candy and fish bread to golden turtles and the baduk game itself. Reply 1988 was showcasing the many facets of love in all its various forms. Taek and Deoksun's love was the quiet and unassuming kind that didn't need fanfare. It's the kind of love that is built to be enduring because its foundation is set in the strong solid ground of a true emotional connection. Neither needing to demand from the other more than what they already naturally give. And each naturally giving to the other what they truly need. Perfect and complete yin-yang harmony.

극중에서 덕선이는 누군갈 좋아하면 챙겨주는 타입임 선우 좋아할땐 다리다친 선우를 간호하고 정팔이 좋아할땐 생일파티를 열어줌 계란이 두개밖에 없어서 엄마가 곤란해하자 안먹어도 된다며 먼저 선수치는 장면도 있었고 노을이 주려고 바나나도 반개만 까먹음 ㅠ 먹는걸 그렇게 좋아하는 애가.. 암튼 좋아하는 사람이 생기면 엄마처럼 알뜰살뜰 살피는 이런 성덕선이 좋아하는 마음을 자각하기도 전에 당연하게 모든걸 챙긴인간이 하나있음 그게 최택임 난 덕선이가 최택을 보자마자 잉어사탕을 통째로 건네준 순간부터 남편게임 끝났다고 본다
덕선이가 택이를 챙기는 장면이 계속 나온것도 택이는 덕선이에게 무의식중에서 항상 신경쓰이는 존재이고 항상 자신을 깎아내리고 모든 일에 자신없어하는 덕선이가 자신이 누군가에게 필요하고 가치있는 존재라는걸 깨닫게 해주기 위해 넣었다고생각. 택이는 덕선이의 결핍을 채워줬고 필요한 순간마다 함께 있었기 때문에 어떤 상황이 닥치더라도 돌고돌아 둘은 반드시 이어졌을것임
반대로 택이한테 챙겨주는 덕선이는 비워진 엄마자리를 위로해주는 존재이기도 했을듯 ㅠㅠ

As someone who watched all three seasons of the Reply series what bugged me the most was that-while I was happy DeokSun ended up with Taek-I initially felt like it was because the decision was made for her. The other female leads were properly confessed to by all interested parties and they had the chance to search their feelings and make a choice. I thought that because JungHwan never properly confessed then she wasn’t able to make a fair choice or have a choice at all between the two of them.
But reading your comment and thinking about what DongRyong said I realized that his point still stands, if not more strongly. JH or Taek’s feeling shouldn’t influence her decision because at the end of the day it’s about who she likes and what she wants. I’m glad who she liked and what she wanted was Taek. And it was 100% her choice⭐️
And Taek is the first person that made her chose friendship over crush. She didnt want to be awkward with Taek eventhough she seemed to like Taek after she moved on from Jung Pal in 1988/1989. Her treatment towards Taek was totally different than hers towards Sun Woo and Jung Pal.
I like how it became a clean slate for the three of them in 1994, since 1988/89 Jung Pal, Taek, and Deok Sun all chose friendship over love. And fortunately, 1994 Taek was getting braver and our 1994 Deok sun was getting more clear about her own feelings🥰

Her first two crushes were cause of peer pressure, she thought that she liked them because her friends said that they liked her so her choice and her feeling we're not there which is why you could see that she got over them easily. rather than her liking them it was more about being liked my someone and that feeling that she fell for, as for teak she the way she liked him was natural and you can almost see that she grew up through that emotion because for the first time she chose friendship over all and that shows the importance and the presence of him in her life

I always thought that it was implied that the change was due to JungHwan’s wish. JH wished during the meteor shower for Taek to become a jerk because he felt betrayed when he discovered that Taek smoked but never told anyone. On top of that JH and Taek liked the same girl, so in a moment of weakness JH wished ill on his friend. Apparently it sort of came true in the future and that’s the joke.

You know what I like about Dukseon and Taek is that neither of them changed themselves for the other. With sunwoo, dukseon changed herself and with Junghwan, she changed herself. Both relationships with those two because quite awkward and unwieldy. Taek and Dukseon didn't change their personalities for each other and accepted each other completely how they were. This, they're relationship grew quite naturally
Thats because duk seon is matured enough. You can see how matured duk seon was from time to time esp when she entered the adult life. She liked sunwoo and junghwan when she was in her teen life but not for taek. She realized her feeling for taek when she was adult and she acted like adult.
@@belllievewalwalforever3215 I think DS always lowkey loved Taek but didn't know to express it/sometimes didn't know it herself. As a teen every time he looked at her for a second too long or came too close her heart would stop...that's gotta mean that she didn't see Taek entirely platonically. She even stayed by his side in his room after he told her to go home (almost right after DR told her to focus on who she likes and not who likes her for once), just because she wanted to be around him. It wasn't as easy as to treat him like a quick crush the way she treated the other boys, with Taek it was always more scary to cross the line because what she felt for him was deeper. I agree with you that older DS had it all figured out when Taek made the move, she was way mature about how to let him into her life.

watched this drama when i was 16 or 17 and im really rooting for junghwan, but now that im rewatching it (i'm 19 now btw), i can see why deokseon chooses taek. In relationships, honesty and timing really plays a big role in love.

If I watched this during my immature teenage years, I would’ve chosen Junghwan, too. The cold, tsundere type really amazes me before, they secretly care for you. But as you age, you realize the value of expressing your feelings out loud, the consistent care, the one who never hesitate. Great ending, wished they show more of deoksun-teak ending :

Jung Hwan takes over his mother. She was almost never tender to her husband. I guess Jungpal never learned how to convey his feelings, well and like any teenager he feared rejection. I read in other comments that definitely Taek was a great player, he knew when to seize his day.

cannot agree with you more. children are affected alot by their parents' behaviour. Junghwan is cold outside but warm inside just like his mom, doesnt know how to express his feeling much. I feel the same since our family members do not show our love to each other, we consider it kind of weird and cringy. It's truly sad that duk seon didn't end up with jung hwan since I've rooted for the both of them since the beginning. However, her-- ending up with choi taek is just too cute. The way taek smiles like a puppy whenever he sees duk seon is just so cute and heart-fluttering. I'm more than satisfied that they ended up together. I mean, who wouldn't fall for taek's child-like innocence and cuteness 💙
if you didn't root for anyone and just simply follow the current you'll know that Taek always doing the most and Jungpal always doubting his feelings. JP had all the chances but still didn't do shit for her i was disappointed in him lol. Taek who barely gotten any rest and time with the gang was always one step forward JP like sacrificing his match. I mean jungpal literally lived CLOSEST to her and then what. Then again i think he values his friendship over his feelings towards DS anyways.
But taek personality changed when become older. That's why I have a problem.

As this drama was based on the real-life story, the writer cant change the plot of it. The only part they did was getting back Jung Hwan during Duk Seon's sister wedding, as we know that the original character was killed in the aircraft training before the wedding.
But this drama was superb. From the casts to the sets, everything was great. It brings me back to 88 -90s era which i miss the most now.

원래 어남류였는데 정주행해보니까 어남택 떡밥 많아서 좀 놀랬음.. 첫화부터 덕선이 엄마가 사위삼자하고 덕선이도 자기한테 시집오라하고 그런 자잘한 것부터 덕선이 마음차이가 보이는게 많네. 택이랑 찍은사진엔 활짝 웃고 정환이랑 찍은건 무표정, 정환이 마음을 깨닫고(소개팅하지마) 설레는 맘으로 밥먹을때도 중간에 택이 밥가져다주고 다먹는것까지 굳이 보고나옴. 정환이한테 관심가진것도 선우때처럼 친구들이 부추겨서고. 정환이랑 대화할때는 시니컬한것도 많은데 택이한테는 항상 다정하고 말도 더듬더듬.. 저처럼 어남류인데 마음아파서 정주행 못하셨던 분들! 꼭 한번 정주행 해보세요!! 새로운 세계입니다

I searched who'll be the husband first before watching it so I can avoid the second lead syndrome but my heart aches for junghwan, although I am actually team taek, I still feel so frustrated with junghwan, the confession scene scarred me so much.
I think the problem is they didn't build up taek and deoksun's relationship earlier (though I really adore their couple scenes near the end), and also because they didn't give us a proper closure for junghwan's feeling although I've seen a lot of comments saying that him leaving the ring at the restaurant is the sign that he's really leaving his feelings behind, still It will be really nice if we knew what happened to him, did he get a new girl? or whatever.
But really, watching this for the 5th time made me realize that deoksun really like taek she just didn't know because she's so focused about thinking how she will receive sunwoo's and jungpal's love when she learned about their feelings.
With taek it is different, she was the one who discovered her feelings for him. This is why her scene with dongryong is significant, remember when dongryong said something about knowing her real feelings.
Anyways this drama still haunts me, I'll probably watch this even when I'm 60 lol
you know what, i almost searched up who her husband is, and glad I didn't. I keep guessing who will she marry I even guess "will it be dongryong? no it can't be.. but the way future husband talk and behave it can't be taek..." lol i am team taek also and VERY HAPPY that she married taek. I squeal like a girl when it's taek who came to the concert with deokseon instead of jungpal and that's when I'm sure she will marry taek.
i shipped jungpal and deokseon in earlier episodes but jungpal became suffocating later on with his feeling I don't know why.

Wow, I felt exactly the same when I finished this last March, also thank you for sharing your thoughts I really understand the feeling of wanting to talk about this really amazing kdrama I don't have anyone to talk to either because my friends watched this years ago and I just discovered it this year.
I just can't move on from this kdrama and felt the need to express my sentiments so even though most of the comments here are Korean and I actually thought no one would notice this, I wrote this long comment with the hopes that I can finally get over the series lol
Also, I think you're the first person that I can finally relate to, lol when I talked to my friends before I watched this kdrama they told me not to watch it (because they knew I don't like kdrama that has a second lead syndrome) I was pretty afraid at first, hence why I searched for the husband first.
But really I feel bad for junghwan and shipped him to deoksun at first but not all the way, my friends are team jungpal even after this years, and they don't understand why I became team taek afterwards.

Although i heard that the other reply series are also super amazing especially the 1997. My friends adviced me to avoid 1994 while im still healing from 1988 because the seond lead syndrome there was pretty strong too

I love this drama's main character roles of deokseon n taek it shows reality how actually partner r in real life not necessary they should b perfect or beautiful what actually needed is caring for each other. only I feel incomplete in this drama is their wedding scene.

When I tell people that I liked Junghwan but I've always rooted for Choi Taek, they ask me why not Junghwan. I just tell them that it's probably because of the simple fact that Taek was much more honest and expressive with his feelings for Deoksun, and Junghwan wasn't. It pays to be open about your feelings if you want a chance with that special someone...
Camille Exactly. I rooted for Taek from the beginning. I like his attitude towards Deok Sun because I personally think that's how people should be in real life. Plus, Taek left an important match in his career just to go to Deok Sun who was alone when her date didn't show up, meanwhile Junghwan hesitated before going to her. So I really think that Taek deserves Deok Sun more.

Srushti Bhingi Hwan was great as a male friend but he wasted too many opportunities to get Deok Sun's heart. 7:56 이 장면이 괜히 있는게 아니라고 생각함. 드라마에서 이런 씬을 아무 의미없이 넣진 않죠. 그리고 이게 정말 꿈이었다면 ‘택이는 덕선이가 꿈에 나올만큼 덕선이를 너무 좋아한다’ 라는 걸 보여줄 수 있는 장면이나 효과를 줬을텐데 헷갈리게 한 것을 보면 꿈이 아니라는 걸 유추할 수 있게끔 한거라고 생각함.
Even if Junghwan and Deoksun got together they would eventually tire each other out with the bickering and the romance would eventually fizzle. He's too brusque for someone as emotionally sensitive like Deoksun and she's too goofy for someone as socially conscious as Junghwan. She exasperates and embarrasses him, while he is too good at offending her and provoking her anger.
Junghwan might love Deoksun but he will find it difficult to respect her on an intellectual level (like his more serious-natured mother looks down on her goofy playful husband). Deoksun already has emotional baggage from her childhood that has her questioning her worthiness to being loved and this will only worsen her fear of being inadequate. Will this fear induce her to tone down her natural exuberance and hold back her true opinions in order to avoid conflict in their relationship if they become couple? She is already conditioned to be a matyr from childhood due to the dynamics of her family. Or will Junghwan be the one to swallow his irritation to keep peace? Whether it be Deoksun or Junghwan or both, holding back will only lead to supressed resentment. Or will they continue as they are, neither yielding to the other? Neither situation would be healthy.
There was a very telling scene about how Deoksun felt about Junghwan and Taek. Even when she was at the height of her crush for Junghwan and violently jostled her brother out of the way to sit next to him, she still jumped up to deliver Taek's food without hesitation when asked to. She then stayed with Taek even when she was annoyed with his demands and seemed to forget all about getting back to Junghwan. It was a shallow crush that was bound to fade as quick as it appeared - as seen by her fast switch to disinterest towards Junghwan the instant Taek piqued her romantic interest.
As with both Sunwoo and Junghwan, Deoksun was merely in love with the idea of being loved and wanted. Stems from her childhood feelings of neglect. She is prone to putting other's needs before hers. It didn't matter what she wanted, only mattered that she believed they wanted her. She jumped in without precaution as her true heart was safe from them and so she could be careless. With Taek, it was her own vulnerable heart speaking, and so she treaded more carefully with him and was shy and tentative rather than openly and aggressively flirtatious.
With Sunwoo and Junghwan, her hurt feelings were short-lived and gone without much residue awkwardness. But she was very careful with Taek because he held tremendous power to hurt her deeply, so deeply that she knew their friendship might never be the same again should it happen. And her fear of this was a huge factor in why she didn't want to proceed from friends to lovers until she was absolutely sure of his feelings. Unlike with Sunwoo and Junghwan, Taek's affectionate friendship was her place of comfort, her emotional refuge. She had to know where they stood before she took the risk lest it be ruined if she was once again mistaken.
It was clear that she was more emotionally invested in Taek. With Taek, she never hesitated to prioritise him. With Junghwan, she forgets all about him when Taek is in the picture. She picks Taek every time. Junghwan gave her the exact pink gloves she desperately wanted, and yet she picks Taek's pink mittens to wear. She was quick to forgive Taek when he angers her because she had complete unquestioning trust that he harboured no deliberate intentions to cause her hurt, but she would go toe to toe with guns blazing when it came to Junghwan. Their relationship would be volatile, each unwilling to compromise with each other or take the time to clear up grievances as evident in the pink-shirt incident.
There were also many comparable scenes showcasing Junghwan's and Taek's reaction to Deoksun in similar scenarios. For example when Deoksun realised her mistaken presumption over Sunwoo's feelings, Junghwan laughed at her folly and felt relieved for himself. He failed to symphathise with her hurt. When Taek read her diary note, he seemed thoughtful and concerned. Taek went on to extract a little friendly revenge out on Sunwoo for Deoksun's hurt feelings.
Continuing the comparison, Junghwan always reacts with either irritation, secrecy or hesitation while Taek reacts swiftly and openly with affection and support. Where practical and pragmatic Junghwan would dismiss her anguish as a dramatic over-reaction to a trivial matter, Taek would respond with unconditional comfort. And because of this, Deoksun was also more trusting of Taek, allowing him to see her vulnerable soft inner-self that she protects with a feisty hardened outer shell. All Junghwan was privy to see was her tough exterior because she was always on the defensive with him.
Looking over her interactions with Taek, it's reasonable to surmise that Doeksun loved Taek even before she could even recognize it. She was expecting the love with the fireworks like in the romance novels that she reads. It took her some time to realise that love can be the calm devotion that came from deep-rooted attachments born from a positive emotional connection with another person. Those attachments are evident in how she combs over Taek's actions, truly wanting to know where she stands in his life. All those sleepless nights. His actions affected her most deeply.
The China trip was a huge turning point for Deoksun's and Taek's relationship. Taek's helplessness and gentle and amiable disposition back home gave him an aura of perpetual child-like innocence that had obscured his progression into manhood. For the first time Deoksun got a glimpse of an authoritative and steely-minded Taek with a cigarette in hand who commanded an imposing presence amongst adults in the (now evident to her) very serious and very adult world of competitive baduk. Before this, the news media's grandiose descriptions of Taek had been laughable and inconceivable to her, but now she finally saw for herself the glacial stone-faced "baduk-god" in his element. That was when her image of him as a soft and incapable little boy obsessed with a mere board-game started to crack.
Taek's transition from boy to man in Deoksun's perception of him was a monumental revelation to her. I believe his transformation came to a full completion in Deoksun's mind in the scene where he scoops her up and carries her across the field, just like a hero out of her romance novels. This "new" Taek surprised and intrigued her and she was smitten. You can see it in the soft way she looks at him in the alleyway scene and how hesitant she was to part from him that same night. Seeing him as a full-fledged man was a catalyst that allowed her love for Taek to tip-toe into romantic territory. However, as she became aware of this shift, she not only found herself at the forefront of a new frontier but she had also lost the confidence in her own ability to gauge the situation because of her past mistakes regarding Sunwoo and Junghwan. No way was she going to risk her relationship with Taek on an unknown factor, which is - does he reciprocate her feelings
With Taek, she wanted to know for sure how he feels about her because their bond was too precious to take a gamble on. She wanted a direct sign from him. She wasn't going to take their first kiss as concrete evidence as he was drugged out and half-asleep. Her nervousness made her let him think it was a dream, but she gave him a chance to make a move by asking him what his "dream" was about. This is where Taek has to own half of the blame when he said he was relieved that it was a dream and said it was "nothing" when she pressed him further. Taek blew his chance there. At the time, he knew what he wanted but was primarily concerned about how it would affect Junghwan. All three became caught up in a "who will make the first move" standoff. Junghwan being his hesitant self and not wanting to hurt Taek or compromise his pride by admitting his feelings to Deoksun, Taek not wanting to hurt Junghwan just to clue Deoksun in on his romantic interest, and Deoksun not wanting to be wrong again because this time it really mattered.
The ball finally started to roll again after Taek forfeited his match to show up at the concert. Her feelings had been quietly simmering for all those years while she was low-key waiting for a clearer sign from him. Taek choosing her over baduk was the sign that she needed. She allowed her romantic feelings for him to re-ignite as she was finally hopeful that his feelings for her ran deeper than she had thought. You can see the changes in her behaviour after the concert. She reverted back to her shy demeanor, full of romantic curiosity for Taek, as she mentally prepared herself to fully grasp the moment should it present itself again. Fortunately, this time she had maturity and a new bolstered sense of emotional bravery that allowed her to take a leap of faith in Taek's hotel room when that opportunity appeared.
The most telling scene that illustrated clearly that Taek and Deoksun are the most suited to each other was during their first kiss. Their bodies resembled the Yin-yang symbol - two halves of a whole. They celebrate each other's strengths and make up for each other's weaknesses - a perfect match. There was so much symbolism scattered throughout, from fish candy and fish bread to golden turtles and the baduk game itself. Reply 1988 was showcasing the many facets of love in all its various forms. Taek and Deoksun's love was the quiet and unassuming kind that didn't need fanfare. It's the kind of love that is built to be enduring because its foundation is set in the strong solid ground of a true emotional connection. Neither needing to demand from the other more than what they already naturally give. And each naturally giving to the other what they truly need. Perfect and complete yin-yang harmony.
