Navy SEAL, Jocko Willink and Director, Echo Charles discuss leadership, ownership, and mental toughness. Extreme Ownership. Available on iTunes and Stitcher.
I’m 22 now, Starting from number 1 after watching all 3 JRE podcasts with jocko. This dude has got me working out and also, I start a new job in 3 days and I’m happy to have this guy to listen to. He doesn’t motivate me he reminds me to motivate myself. Hands down my role model.
If this is anyone's first exposure to Jocko I recommend also listening to Jocko's appearances on the Tim Ferris podcast & the Joe Rogan Experience, he also has a book entitled "Extreme Ownership" that is a great read.
28:50 The key for getting from 15 to 20 pushups when you can't do anymore is to pause for 15-30 seconds then do as many as you can, then rest and repeat, you can do almost 100 in 20 minutes when your max is only 15 consecutive. That's way more powerful to your mental toughness than giving up at your max or trying to push your max.
It's Jan 02 2024. I'm off on 4 weeks leave from work staying with family interstate. Using this time to reflect, getting my mind right. One thing I wanna do is start listening to the Jocko Podcast, so I'm starting from #1, plan is to listen 1 hour each day, kinda like a daily master class on Personal Growth / Leadership Growth that I'm 'signing up' for , currently the JP is up to number #417. I'm also on to Day 2 of the DEF RESET 2024 Challenge. 8 Daily Habits. Hopefully I don't stay off the Path. I'll give you all an update Dec 31 2024 so I can hold myself accountable... Let's get AFTER IT #DEF
Don't just get up early to wake up early. Wake up early to get after it. Focus on the goal. Waking up early is just the tool to get it done not the end goal.
I found this podcast after listening to both Joe Rogan appearances. I have to say that I'm starting to really feel what you have to say Jocko. It's making me think a lot and It's caused me to start a new path in my life. I'm getting back into jiu jitsu thanks to your talks about discipline and JUST DO IT! I want to give you props and say keep it up man! On a side note I was in the Air Force and hearing all your war stories are interesting. Being part of the chair force I didn't get the experience you did, but having family and friends who are/were in the Marines I've heard about how hard it can be in the front. Proud of you and every other Marine. Thanks for fighting in the frontlines for our freedom and liberty. HOORAH!!
Jocko you are one inspirational badass. Listening to you talk about your time in Iraq changed my perspective about military/SEALs a lot. Thanks for doing this.
So glad you made a podcast. Rogan mentions podcasts a lot with guests, but im glad he encouraged it in this case. im spreading the word. thank you sir!
jocko, i heard you on joe rogans podcast and i was immediately drawn in and could not stop listening till the end . what was so griping was your honesty, your incredible gift to express your thoughts and feeling verbally. i guess articulate is the word im looking for. i am so thankful for you and your service to our country.. i wish i had a fraction of your mental toughness, you are a fantastic human being and im very fortunate to have even got to hear what you have to say .. thank you, thank you you are a hero among heros .
Jocko, Please keep going with this!!! I listen to your PODCAST and Videos everyday at work. You are a Great Motivator, Leader, and Wise man. So happy to learn more about you with each Cast. Echo - Always a great person! I enjoy that you spread your knowledge, teachings, and drive. You guys keep moving Forward and Up!!
Thanks for the new perspective! Sometimes I need a wake-up call to truly appreciate what I have and to take ownership for my actions! Will pass this on to others!
I'm discovering these podcasts now. Great timing for me, need a kick in the pants and some good reminders. Mental toughness... this is what I learned many years ago. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Step out of your comfort zone. The more you step out of your comfort zone the bigger that comfort zone gets, the bigger your life gets. My mental toughness grows or stays front and center in my life as I continue to step out of my comfort zone. Even if one is stepping out of that comfort zone a little bit at a time, your building mental toughness a little bit at a time and keeping mental toughness front and center.
Topics: Why waking up early is important: 7:20 Where mental Toughness comes from: 26:25 Key mental and physical steps or patterns to stay on game 31:08 What drives Jocko: 37:05 Advice for new leaders: 41:25 Dealing with people who avoid accountability: 53:17 Jocko's most difficult day in the military: 56:40
I'd add a timestamp for his statement on the approach of Jiu-Jitsu in contrast to Boxing, but he misrepresented Boxing quite a bit. The Art of Combat (At the pinnacle of its efficacy) as a whole would have been a good example for what he was explaining. He didn't need to oversimplify Boxing down to such an extreme in order to exalt his chosen method because every single form of Combat can be sloppily simplified as, "One person trying to hit the other." It doesn't invalidate his point, but it gives it a bit of a bad taste because I don't know of any Elite-Boxers who didn't optimize their Fighter's IQ in order to mentally condition their opponents.
I'm not able to explain the emotions that I have from listening such wisdom and honesty. Just know that every man you served with is very lucky and I have to believe is better off having served with you. And as a listener of your podcast we are all better off having the privilege of being exposed to a very great man! I have very high admirations for you Mr Jocko.
Jocko is awesome. I loved the part about "being honest doesn't give the right to be a jerk. You need tact. Use jiu-jitsu in communication". Awesome thought. I was wondering about it my whole life .
Just started this first podcast! Looking forward to listening to all of the others. My son just joined the Navy. Wonderful show. I grew up with Chris Kyle in Midlothian. Gave me chills when you mentioned his name. God bless Chris, you, my son and all of the military that has served our country and is continuing to serve.
Thanks Jocko for helping us stay sharp and get up when we slip and keep driving forward. Thanks for your service.Say hello to the Machine for me its been years since I've met him.
I just searched for this as well, this is extremely exciting. I'm really looking forward to learning more from Jocko and focusing on improving my discipline in the coming year. Jocko, Thank you for doing this and for your service to our country.
I am just discovering Jocko so I am backing up to watch from #1. Echo challenged him in the first 10 minutes...how is he still living lol. Glad I found this. Highly recommend it.
I like how Echo acknowledges that he didn't really have a need for discipline until a few years before this video. Like him, I was pretty naturally gifted at most things I did, and while I worked hard to improve at them, I never had to truly apply high levels of self discipline. It was either not necessary or applied for me by coaches, teachers, parents, etc.
Hey Jocko, I saw a video where you were responding to a letter from a fan on discipline and how it doesn't come from your family. I was surprised by the amount of empathy you conveyed in your response while still maintaining accountability, so I subscribed. I haven't heard any of your other podcasts, but I'm planning on playing them each day in the background at work starting with this one to get caught up. Looking forward to being able to follow in real time in the future! Thanks man.
Coming to "BACK IN THE DAY" of episode #1 and listening again.... Man!.... I can't believe it's going on 2.6 years now, or I should say, I can't believer it's already been 2.6 years.
Read a few leadership books and in hindsight all are based on hierarchy leadership. Only two people so far speak a different language, you Jocko and David Novak. The best 90min i've heard on the subject, you got yourself a subscriber! Godspeed
Need to get 96 year old Vincent Speranza of US Army 101st Airborne Division WW2 veteran on your podcast. He grew up in NY during the depression. His family immigrated from Italy and Vince speaks Italian. He was at the Battle of Bastogne, Battle of the Bulge and he was there when 101st liberated Dachau concentration camp.
Sir, first of all, you are the most legit person I have heard on a podcast. There are a lot of people who claim to be self-help gurus, and try to sell themselves, and basically rip off people who are desperately trying to improve themselves. But you are totally honest, you don't try to sugar-coat your listeners, you tell the truth. I am going to go through all of your podcasts. :)
One of my life time mentors is CMC Davis, many years ago as a young man he told me something that had always stuck with me. "The number one element in success and respect is fear! Without fear there's no success or respect" -Herschel ;)
Just got done watching your interview on the Joe Rogan podcast, glad to see you have this up and running! Hooyah from Ireland! Looking forward to more!
hell yea you actually did it! Not that I'm surprised. I think you're the only Rogan podcast I've watched twice. I can't believe that was already over a month ago
Just started listening in the last few weeks. Really enjoyable listening. Love the story at the end, "so your telling me your ten year old brain is doing a better job moving cover to cover than your 23 year old brain". Keep up the great work!
Jocko has a Beautiful Life filosophy and a very clear way to comunicate It. Its always nice to hear him. Im from Argentina, Buenas Aires, i wish i could buy his Book Here.

They say Jocko was born in Alaska, in a cabin he built with his own 2 hands.

Sounds about right!
Hahaha!!
I heard that if you try to shoot him the gun won’t work, because bullet are scared of him 😂
I heard that people commonly stop Jocko on the street and say, 'Hey! Aren't you Chuck Norris?"
If this is anyone's first exposure to Jocko I recommend also listening to Jocko's appearances on the Tim Ferris podcast & the Joe Rogan Experience, he also has a book entitled "Extreme Ownership" that is a great read.
+TKE644 Yeah he mentions the book in the first couple of minutes.
he was just on Sam Harris' podcast as well, it was a really interesting podcast.
