  • This i7 3770 cost me £30, but how well does it game in 2023? I've paired it with the RX 570 4GB and compared it to the i5 3470. I think the results are quite surprising.

It’s massively impressive that processors from over 10 years ago can still run modern titles (To varying degrees of playability). I’m still running a 3770k safe OC to 4.4ghz and I can run quite a lot of new games on high/med settings (All 1080 though).

This is an interesting test of the system, but I'm not sure it's a great test of just the CPU. Having a 570, and more importantly, only 8GB of RAM, is going to hold things back A LOT in newer games. I had a 3770 system until recently, and upgrading to 16GB made a big difference.

I just upgraded to an i7 6700 from a i5 6500 for about 60€. The jump to 8 logic cpus was really worth it for the type of games I play (mostly open world). I benchmarked many games from the last 10 years at 1080p and 1440p.
This is still working well on pretty much all of them ar 60fps with vsync except for the most demanding ones like Watch Dogs Legion or RRedemption 2 where the vsync is no longer desirable.
I moved from a GTX 1060-3gb to the RTX-2070-Super and still gained some perf - especially at 1440p. In fact in some games thete is nearly no difference between 1080p and 1440p as the cpu is indeed sometimes too slow for the gpu at 1080p. But again then the perf at 1440p exceeds 60fps anyway.

It can support 32GB RAM(8Gb 1600Mhz x 4), a normal 2 fan GPU, and the motherboard supports a regular 24 pin power PSU, the only caveat on the last one is that it needs to be non-modular. I have an i7-3770 paired with a 1660 super and 16gb ddr3. I don't know if it's my mechanical hard drives that are failing, but fortnite is completely unplayable, even on the performance preset. It gets good frames, but it stutters all the time. Like really bad stutters and super frequent. Neither my CPU or GPU is pegged in that scenario either, which is odd. GTA also doesnt run as well as it should with it dropping down into the 40s no matter the graphics settings. However i did install a game on one of my hdds the other day and it completely refused to load, so i put it on my boot ssd and it was fine... Maybe the drives are dying. Really odd.
