I'm curious to know if you scrape off the roots, from the bottom of the screen first, will it be better to harvest the basil on top? Less waste possibly.
it would probably result in a cut that is less clean than a knife or scissors, which would shorten the lifespan, but if you are going to be using them quickly and they are just personal (not for sale) it might be the way to go.

FEEDBACK: I'm planning to start a 10x10 tray today, but when I pre-checked my genovese basil seeds just now, fully 1/3rd dropped thru the 1mm mesh. Digital calipers confirmed it - the seeds from the batch/brand I had (Organo Republic) ranged in their max drop-thru diam from 0.7mm to 1.3mm, so people definitely need to pre-sieve the seeds with the RGM (while dry) to reserve the seeds too small for the RGM for use with a different grow medium.

BTW, I was gonna suggest using a few small rare earth magnets on the bottom corners of the mesh tray to hold the RGM flat, but then I remembered most stainless steel types are either non-magnetic, or are very weakly magnetic at best. Oh well.
Thanks for the great tips. For the smaller than 1 mm size seeds, you can either use a piece of cheese cloth under the SS mesh, or try soaking the seeds to expand them. Happy growing!

Question.... do you grow alfalfa sprouts and bean sprouts? If you do, do you have videos on these? Your channel is the only one i seem to trust when it comes to microgreens. If you not have videos on these, do you have a channel of someone you trust that has them? Sorry so long. Great channel and info and have enjoyed them very much.

I really liked the video. I'm still not sure how to keep the mucilaginous seeds from sticking to the weighted tray. I'm gonna try a single ply of a paper towel. Maybe if I leave the towel on till it's time to introduce light things will work out. What do you think?
For the leftover scraps, would it be palatable if thrown in a salad, or maybe a fruit smoothie/juice? It seems it's clean enough to eat but not sure if the roots are bitter or something.

I don’t see why not. It wouldn’t be any different than sprouts being no dirt or coco coir.

I don’t think the taste and nutrition is very different in all parts at this stage of development.
I have been searching everywhere for a pump sprayer like you have with a small nozzle (instead of a long wand). Can you tell me where you got yours? I haven’t seen them in your shop but I wish you sold them. Also, I just received my reusable medium from you and have my second grow happening now. Struggling a bit. First grow did fine until I removed from blackout, then it instantly dried out. Tips?
GREAT info. I'm trying to get into microgreens and I wasn't fond of buying cocoa core over n over again as the medium(seems expensive for a repeat buy. When I saw those reusable grow mats I was like YYYAAAZZZZZ.
I've seen other growers let their greens grow a bit taller b4 harvest. Does that depend on the plant variety?

Have you tried Salad Burnet? I have not had luck with it yet after several tries.
.I realize this is a demonstration of your new product. It seems to work very well. Since basil produces such a low tray weight over a relatively long grow period, makes more sense at least to me to raise this one to maturity. In my area though, grocery stores sell live great looking, organic herb plants for $3. Yet, I chose to raise my own from seed. Hardly anyone else buys them. So, I doubt a higher-priced micro basil would move here.
If you grow enough, you could always see about selling to a mid-range or better eatery.
I know someone that its growing on silicon medium. Similar idea to what you have. Stuff its Food safe approved etc..
Super easy to harvest from and cleans in no time .

I'm still using coco but got some on the way to test it out . I feel like germination would be taking little longer vs medium and some stuff I grow would probably still need to be in medium (Amaranth for example ). ( to wet of the environment ) People asking how much ... You are correct it depends on your market . I can tell you that I sell 10g of Amarant for $9 . Stuff like Basil I would probably charge around the same fact that its taking so long its more expensive to grow . I never sell anything cheaper than $35 per 1020 tray

I also recently came up with self watering system for my trays . Watering chore its in the past . I'm not talking about flood table . Each tray gets amount I want and runs on scheduled system . ( yes bottom feeding ) Its takes me a peek and make decision to water it or not and I can skip one tray if I want to or increase other when crop its bigger ( for example )) . I'm still working on it . It will take some time to make if perfect and I always get another solution to existing idea so its constant progress.

Hi - I was wondering if you guys have a step to step guide on how to grow each separate types of seeds? Where can u find this?
So can you use the reusable grow medium with the small green trays and also you have to add more water underneath those trees in order to reach the roots do you just leave the water in there and add to it the next morning or do you dump it out and start fresh? That would use an awful lot of water if you have to dump it out every day.

Do you run your lights and heat mats 24/7 or cycle a day night schedule?

You will love chickens. And a better way to dispose of leftover roots and stems. We buy day old Sexlink hens from McMurray . Many nice brown eggs

How long can basil last in frig ?
Are there any microgreen seeds that don't do well on a stainless steel mat? do you have a list of seeds that do better on this type of mat?
Yes! Works well with Sunflower, Pea, Radish, Broccoli, Arugula, Basil, Cabbage, Kohlrabi Microgreens, and most Brassica family seeds.
DOES NOT WORK WELL WITH: Swiss chard, Beets, Cilantro. Seeds that can be challenging are Amaranth, Mustard, and other small seed types.

Don't think that's a pizza cutter. It's called a bench scrapper.
It is a pastry scraper. You can buy it for about $10 at a kitchen store. But doubtless, it can be used for many things. 🙂
A flat piece of steel with a handle could be anything you allow it to be 😆 We purchased ours as a "pastry cutter" as it has little measurements and stuff on the steel for cutting things to correct lengths... agreed though, it could be whatever your heart desires it to be 🤗🌱🌱

Nah, I guess they just saving some money on medium by using the steel medium.
your tray can be a "normal" one with holes
I'm trying just a layer of toilet paper - thin enough to make sure the seed roots have no trouble piercing through. I used it for green sprouting broccoli microgreens successfully. I'm just starting out but the toilet paper idea was from another CZcamsr.

Does the stainless in any way affect the taste of the greens?
In all the trials we have tried, we have not noticed a difference in flavor. The 316SS does not leach and is an inert medium so it won't affect the crop.
Is the steel food grade?
It is stainless steel grade 316 just like cookware in your kitchen. Goggle Stainless steel 316.

Why do you need to cover and weigh down the tray at the beginning?

How much $ could you make for one tray of basil?
Depends on how you market it! Generally we don't get less than $20 per tray no matter what we grow.

Even at five dollars per ounce thats some serious work, time and attention for a little more than $10 per tray. I would have sell for $10 per ounce no exceptions for it to be worth it.
Specialty crops like basil fetch a higher price and you could increase the seeding density a bit to increase weight a bit.

Build a strong brand and provide exceptional product... watch a line form for whatever price you choose. Artwork is great example of this. Artists literally selling invisible sculptures for $18,000. Create a connection with people in a genuine manner and there will be a market. 🤫🌱
why not the greens with the root, do not cut them. Always eat them that way.

Could you cut use scraper from root side and harvest more of the stem. A lot of basil appeared to be left on top of tray when you scraped it off. Only concern might be bruised stems that don’t last as long fir clients. For home use I will be harvesting all but tiny roots.
Absolutely! You could totally just cut the roots and keep everything else! The main concern would be exactly what you mentioned, any potential bruising. As long as the stems aren't bruised, it shouldn't shorten the life of the product much.
