I’ve found the standard version is plenty for me as well. I’ve adjusted the available shortcuts in the sidebar to be what I need, and it’s really enjoyable to work on the device this way. Fun to see others liking Astropad as well.
Thank you! Really glad it helped a little, I was worried at first too but honestly unless you rely on lots of shortcuts the standard version works really well
After supporting them a lot and having the standard version, i feel they just ditched their old app and went all money hungry and created a studio app with same old app but few features! I mean 80$ for a year is a lot and they completely abandoned their previous version as well. Really Disappointed
Yeah it’s really frustrating, I do like the basic version but if the other one was less I would have have brought it - but I just can’t justify 80 a year for those few features! All I really want is the double tap and the other gestures, I really hope they re-assess and change the way they price this
@@CarlosDelaoGunEngraver Doubt it since iPad apps are very limited and are missing many features that many professional designers require from a full fledged version of Adobe programs. It is a bummer this company went the route of Adobe with their overpriced subscription model for a simple screen sharing app. Hopefully another company offers something with a set price.
Great video Sophie :) I finally had a go at drawing on one of my friends iPads, and I didn't want to give it back! I'd really like to get one at some point, but I don't have a Mac, so I think I'd have to use a different program to draw.
If you get one I would definitely recommend procreate then! It’s incredible, I use it for all my pencil sketches and ideas now and if it wasn’t for my photoshop brushes I would use it instead of this combo!
Sophie Melissa thanks for the recommendation 😊 I definitely want one, but trying not to just spurge. Shame it’s already been Christmas and my birthday 🤣
So far, so good! Much better to be able to work within the native Adobe apps, as they are, on my Mac. Much prefer this to Procreate or any of the iPad-based drawing apps. Made the same mistake as you and bought the the $29 version, however, it works just fine. If this becomes a major part of my creative arsenal, I will most definitely upgrade. Thanks for the great review ;)
Great Video. Thanks for sharing. I stumbled across Astropad as a Wacom alternative since I had an iPad and indeed folks online have very mixed reviews regarding Standard and Studio. I'm a photographer and really just want to use it to help do some retouching and editing via photoshop, nothing too intense. Do do think standard would be fine for lasso selection tool? I'm worried about lag.
I use that tool fairly often and the pen tool and I don’t have too much lag - and as long as it’s plugged in there isn’t really any lag :) I think standard would be fine, the only big difference with the pro version is being able to add more shortcuts
Thanks for the review. I can't stand the limitations of iPad apps. So much so that I've only used my iPad for a total of 10 minutes in the year I've owned it. My lovely wife actually bought me the iPad since she hear me talking about how I'd love to have a way to draw directly on my screen (as opposed to my wired Wacom). I also found the fluidity of the Apple pencil to be not very appealing. It feels like it sticks on the screen, which is something I don't experience with my wired Wacom tablet. I really want the ability to draw on screen though. Maybe it just takes more getting used to. Anyway, since I'm a pro designer I need the full functionalities offered in full Adobe programs. I don't really see the point in having to learn Affinity apps and ProCreate just for the ability to draw on screen. The limitations of the functionalities isn't appealing at all to me. I tried the Illustrator app and found I was missing many of the features of the full app. I love the idea of Astropad and will probably be purchasing. It's a shame they went the route of Adobe with their subscription model though. It's just a screen sharing app; not sure why they feel the need to charge so much. Hopefully another company will come along and offer a more fair set price and just charge a small amount for updates. I hate subscription models.
Thanks for the video. Question: does the iPad act like a second monitor so you can have an extended display, or is it simply sharing the screen on your laptop? So for example, can you work in Photoshop on your iPad, while having a browser open on your laptop?
Hey how’s it going?!! I downloaded and used astropad because of your review and I think it’s great. Keep up the great work I’ve subscribed. How important do you think it is to become a member of the association of illustrators these days? That’s something I’m considering at the moment.
I really like astropad! It helps with my process and makes everything smoother and quicker :) I’m not a member of AOI at the moment, but was my first year after graduating, and they were very helpful especially with pricing. I think if I wasn’t with my agency, Meiklejohn, I would become a member again for the support side of things - it really depends on your needs!
Hey Sophie, Is it possible to use the shortcuts normally on the Mac while working with the iPad? Like changing the pensil size for example? Thanks for the Video! Greetings, Mary
Thank you! I'm using the tech armor anti glare screen protector, it gives a paper like texture and is so much nicer than drawing onto a glossy screen but is a lot cheeper than the paperlike one!
I hear there is an illustrator for iPad coming in 2020. So, the need to use the iPad as a second screen/Wacom tablet may diminish. That’s what sparked my main interest in this topic. Cause I would love to be able to create vectors on iPad but, be able to open them in illustrator on my Mac if I need to. And I know there’s Affinity. But, there’s things I still need illustrator for. And I’d love to try using it with the Apple Pencil or Wacom pen as opposed to a mouse. Cause I can do pretty well with a mouse but, people kept suggesting Wacom tables like products cause they make certain things easier or help workflow in photoshop and illustrator. Cause I do slot of photo editing but, I’ve been learning vector art as well recently. And I’d like to dive more into it.
It’s a tricky one! I know they recently released photoshop on iPad and I was really disappointed, it’s unusable for digital art in my opinion :( I will definitely be trying illustrator though, I do love affinity but it can be a but clunky for me! Might be worth waiting for a release date and seeing how you feeling about illustrator before getting astropad?
It still isn't going to have the complete feature list that a full Adobe program will, so for professional designers like myself who need full access to all functionalities I don't see it diminishing the need for a screen share app.
Thank you Sophie for this useful updated video! But there's a matter that has been confusing me a lot about the Standard version and I can't find a clear comment about it. When you are using standard, is the computer keyboard functioning normally? I use the keyboard shortcuts with my iMac + wacom intuos all the time and it doesn't make a difference as long as I can simply keep using the shortcuts from my iMac+keyboard. I don't really understand the point of keyboard support for the iPad and why I should pay for a subscription for it. So yes, my question is, can I still use my keyboard shortcuts through the iMac/Macbook or if somehow the Astropad Standard disables the Mac's own keyboard. (As there is no trial version of Standard, I haven't been able to figure out on my own). Thanks a lot!
Yes your computer keyboard works as it usually does! I use my macbook keyboard for shortcuts all the time :) The one that comes on the paid version (I think!) is the iPad pop up or bluetooth keyboard can work with shortcuts alone, so you could be away from your computer working if that makes sense? But your usual keyboard is still fully functional!
That's all I needed to know, thanks a lot Sophie! So basically, as long as Standard is as fast as Studio, it doesn't professionally make sense to subscribe. Awesome, thanks again.
@@SophieMelissa Hi Sophie. After your reply, I downloaded the trial version of Astropad Studio, and giving it a go in Photoshop. Pleased with the performance so far. One very last question, I'd sent an email to Astropad support but received no reply so far so I'll ask you - have you tried the both versions and compared the performance in speed? I like the speed of Studio, and if it is just the same with Standard, I see no reason to not to purchase it. Thank you in advance! Thanks for the video, I have one question: is the display with Astropad just as clear as the actual screen? I used Duet and it appeared pixelated and a bit blurry on my ipad pro 1.9 2018.

Great Video! I have a question though Does your iPad work as just a screen while all the workload is being put of the laptop/PC. Like if I am using clip studio on my PC and connect the iPad to use the pencil and touchscreen so the workload will be on the PC like will it use the PC's ram and all or does it use your iPad's ram and stuff.
